I needed a new pair of glasses — or to be specific, I wanted new lenses in my current frames, and to do that, I needed a second pair of glasses. Sam’s Optical is a listed provider on my vision insurance plan(United Health Care Vision), so off we went. Because Sam’s Optical was approved on my insurance, I did NOT need to be a member of Sam’s Club to use Sam’s Optical(although we joined shortly thereafter). GOODBITS: Sam’s had frames I liked(okay, frames my wife liked) that were covered under my insurance. Staff were friendly, and seemed knowledgeable, but to be honest, I did not have any unusual requirements, so the staff’s ability to meet unusual demands was untested. The fitting was straightforward, and there were no issues in calculating the portion to be paid by my insurance company. The order went out, and came back in about ten days(2 weeks had been predicted), and resulting eyewear did what was expected. I even ordered transitions. Transitions work well in sunlight, but will not darken in the shade or behind glass(e.g., such as when in the car and driving) — a downside of transitions, but all of this was explained to me up front. CONS: I ended up getting Nikon lenses, when I think I would have preferred Zeiss, and in general, would have preferred having more options. Sam’s Optical is not unlike Sam’s overall — a solid deal on what’s available, but not an overly huge selection of choices. However, in terms of my basic objective — a good, solid second pair of eyeglasses — Sam’s did all that I wanted. I was and remain pleased with the result. I would return to Sam’s if or when I need a basic set of eyeglasses.
