I was planning to go back, but it seems to have closed. This place was the first Vallone project I had eaten in, that failed to improve until it became a serious contender. I always thought it had great potential, just nobody really at the helm who cared enough or was good enough to make it run like silk.

«Meh». That’s the word Unilocal uses to define 2 stars, and that’s exactly how I felt about Caffe Bello. We came for Sunday brunch. Surprisingly few people in the restaurant, and just kind of a weird ambiance that I couldn’t put my finger on. Despite being early in the day and with few others there, they had already run out of THREE of the appetizers offered. The good — blood orange mimosas and mini muffin basket. Both were tasty, but then again, how hard is it to pour juice into a champagne glass and bake a muffin? The bad — the«organic martini» and shrimp fritatta. The organic martini wasn’t necessarily bad per se, but what was described as yogurt came out as more of a heavily orange-zested whip cream that was too sweet to finish. The shrimp fritatta was the real low note of the meal. Salty, overcooked shrimp haphazardly stuck into bland eggs. And the dish smelled fishy, to boot. Some of my fellow diners ordered the butternut squash pasta and carbonara pizetta, which were significantly better than what I ordered. With that in mind, I might come back on these stipulations: somebody else wanted to go, it was during lunch/dinner, and they were paying for my meal.

I’m rating this as 4 stars because, yes, I am a fan and I definitely think the foods was better than«A-OK». Yes, the ambiance and service are a little quirky, but the food more than made up for it. We went for brunch. It was Sunday. Just past 1 pm. Crowded? Hardly. For an appetizer, I ordered the Vallone Salad. Good, but not memorable. My entrée was the«Bacon and Eggs» which as the menu describes is «crispy pork belly, poached eggs, and polenta». The pork belly was more like shredded pork and was not fatty like most pork belly is. The eggs were poached perfectly and the polenta was rich and creamy. I licked the plate clean. She had the Pansoti, which is butternut squash stuffed pasta. It was a nice balance of sweet and savory. *This is my stamp of approval* Her appetizer was the shrimp fritatta. I found it dry and boring and seemed pre-prepared; but I make no claims of being a fritatta connoisseur. Wine and drinks were fine. Would I go back? Maybe. We had a $ 30 Groupon so that was our excuse. An $ 85 Sunday lunch is a bit pricey for my taste after going out Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but you never know. Could be a good place to take out-of-town guests. **I was also slightly annoyed that the restaurant offered valet service, but had blocked off nearly the entire(empty) parking lot and even a place nearby on the street. When are Houston restaurant owners going to get a clue and figure out: 1) Most Houstonians do not need valet; and 2) We definitely don’t need it when your parking lot(and restaurant) is/are EMPTY. I do not want to hand my keys to a valet when I can ultimately walk 12 steps to my car which you just parked. I’d rather have your sweaty ass not stink up my brand-new ride a-hole. Cheers, Antonio

This was no bueno. Steer clear of this place at all costs. It’s an absolute embarrassment for the Vallone’s. No where near the quality of Tony’s. The evening started off with getting sat waaaay in the back of a dinning room that was barely full. The waiter was a complete dummy and seemed very uncomfortable. we ordered two pizzas, the burrata, sweet breads, and a parpardelle pasta with tomato and burrata. Nothing stood out and the best thing I had was the burrata, which I am sure they do not make in house so that is probably why it was decent. I left with nothing positive to say about this place. The food was very mediocre and needless to say I will never go back.

Caffe Bello… it’s such a cute place with warm colors and cast iron stairs… I love the whole look of it. The food just didn’t seem to impress me much. We had the Italian sausage and peppers pizza… thin crust… sharable appetizer for two. The bell peppers were very sweet… almost like pineapple. Nothing special though. Then we ordered the meatball with cheesy polenta. Meatball itself was good… kind of charred on the outside… good flavor. I didn’t eat the polenta b/c I don’t like cheese… but my bf seemed to have scaped it all off the plate. Then we had the risotto reggiano which had crispy pork belly fat and mushrooms… that was just ok as well. Didn’t taste fatty but the idea of pork belly fat kinda grosses me out. For dessert we had some lemon ice box cake… meh… don’t think we will be back.

Whenever I drive past, I think about the bellini pitchers and drunken Sundays at the old La Strada. My, how this place has grown up! Caffe Bello is warm and romantic inside, and on a nice night they open the window panes facing their gardens and you get a nice breeze. The crowd remains casual — no need to dress up here — but don’t let that fool you… The food here is great! They recently got a new executive chef(previously from Brennan’s) and he completely revamped their menu like 2 weeks ago(giving me the honor of being the first to review it!). Ladies and gentlemen, this is not your run-of-the-mill pizza & pasta joint! What we had: * Charred shisito peppers w/sea salt and parmesan: A little aggressive with the salt — You definitely need a cold beer to go with these! * Pizza Carbonara: A floppy thin crust, lots o’ cheese, pancetta, & fresh herbs, and topped with — wait for it — a FRIEDEGG. It reminded me more of breakfast than carbonara, but either way it was pretty tasty. I just wish the crust were crispier. * Short Rib Risotto: I could eat a whole bowl of this! I wanted it to be runnier but no need to split hairs — It was delicious. * Burrata Cheese w/roasted asparagus: This is a must have! The creamy Borrata drizzled with reduced balsamic, the slightly charred asparagus, the fresh herb salad… So simple, yet so delicious! * Butternut Squash Ravioli w/Sage Cream sauce: Rich, creamy, and naturally sweet, with a hint of nutmeg… Solid dish but nothing out of the ordinary here. * Softshell Crab w/Pea Salad & Mint Pea Purée: This was one of the specials, and it was A-MA-ZING. The crabs were delivered that day and were huge and sweet. The batter was crispy and light, letting the crab be the star. The pea salad was delicious, crunchy, and naturally sweet, and thee purée brought everything together. All for $ 19! What a steal! * Pan-seared salmon w/Panzanella: HUGE portion — easily 8 – 10 ozs of salmon. It had a perfect crisp sear on one side and was seasoned perfectly. The panzanella was okay, but this dish needs a green veg. * Olive Oil Rosemary Cake w/Lemon Filling: This is a wonderful, moist cake. The rosemary is subtle but adds a nice aromatic flair to the cake. It is topped with whipped cream and drizzled with strawberry sauce. Not the best presentation, but looks can be deceiving. In conclusion, Caffe Bello is a great spot for upscale fare in a casual setting. The cozy atmosphere and location can’t be beat, and with entrees priced $ 10-$ 25, it’s sort of an unbeatable value for the type of food they are now serving up!

I live for brunch and so far Caffe Bello has won me over. Where else can you find a 3 course brunch menu and for the price of your entrée? Deal! It’s not advertised on their website(deceptive!) but if you order from their brunch menu, you can pick any one of their appetizers and any one of their desserts when you order an entrée. An entrée ranges from $ 12 or $ 14 – 26 which is on par with Backstreet but you get so much more food for your money! We started off with their mimosa and peach blueberry italian soda drink. Appetizers were their margherita pizzette and butternut squash ravioli. The sauce that came with the pasta was so rich but so good. If you want healthy, their appetizer menu has a granola and yogurt parfait and includes some salads. Entrees include eggs benedict, apparently the best ricotta and nutella pancakes my friend has ever eaten, jalapeño crabmeat omelettes, fried chicken and waffles(most people ordered this from what I observed), etc. I didn’t get a chance to eat the pancakes but they looked amazing and I was told that they tasted equally amazing as well. The plate came with 2 ricotta pancakes drizzled with nutella and a little bit of syrup topped with a bit of whipped cream and raspberries and blueberries. My omelette came with a bunch of crabmeat and was covered in this super rich white sauce. I ended up choosing their OMG! chocolate cake and OMG! it was rich. Friend got the tiramisu which I enjoyed as well. They also have cannolis, sorbetto, gelato, and cheesecake to choose from. All my food choices were really rich but worth getting really fat for. Oh yeah, for $ 5 you can add a mini muffin plate to your meal which we got as well. Imagine an assortment of warm(!!!) mini muffins and whipped honey butter and you can imagine how happy we were when we received this. Damn we ate a lot. The staff here is amazing and we were checked on/served by not one but two people throughout our meal and they did so without making it feel like they were intruding or interrupting our meal. Perfect timing is a great thing! The place is clean, friendly, quiet enough for you to carry a conversation and busy enough that it’s not awkwardly quiet, spacious and not packed like backstreetcafetinyboxwoodsbarnabys, has huge windows for the sunlight to stream in, and is the epitome of a lazy weekend brunch.

This place is great if you have some extra time for lunch because they have $ 14 three course specials. I had the rabbit pizza, and my friend had the special. So I basically ordered the pizza because it was different. It was covered in balsamic, but I ate it all. pretty good! I highly recommend the Oh My God cake. Jesus it was good! It’s super rich chocolate inside but then the whole thing is covered in marshmellow madness and dipped in chocolate. It’s seriously heavenly. FYI: They charge for refills, so don’t think you are getting a coke for $ 2.50 because their glasses are definitely under 8oz.

I came here with a gaggle of girlfriends for their $ 10 bottomless Bellini’s and Mimosa’s, YUM! The day was beautiful, the view was better, and the ambiance was spectacular! We had nice music and the waiter was really prompt about refilling our drinks(maybe he was afraid of what would happen if you took cocktails away from 10 ladies!) The food came and everything was scrumptious. After a few hours of drinking and eating, they started adding vodka to the Bellini’s. The experience after all that liquor was a different story, but that totally wasn’t Caffe Bello’s fault! I plan on going here again, frequently!

Lunch on a workday. EMPTY. Why bother with valet, even if complimentary, when you have all of 3 tables at lunch? I glanced at the menu, it looked tasty, but went with the easy way with the«express lunch». $ 14 for appetizer, entrée, and dessert — deal. The staff was very nice and did an excellent job explaining the menu. The bread arrived — I think it’s weird that it’s placed in the middle of the table on the butcher paper, but it tastes good. The waiter was a tad slow in offering olive oil, but it happened eventually. Wedding soup was good, not great, and definitely nothing to write home about. In fact, I only got it because I was cold and wanted to be warm. The occhiette was tasty, with sausage and greens. The salmon paillard also had a wonderful tangy flavor with a fresh arugula topping. Too bad they arrived a good long while after we had already finished our soups. Service is nice and friendly, but slow, and food is good. Oddly, we seemed to get a new waiter midway through our meal because a chick came by and took our plates and asked if we were ready for dessert. Why yes, because we ordered the«express lunch». Too bad it wasn’t express — the whole meal took almost 1.5 hrs! However, the dessert was also delicious. The menu said blueberry tart but the tart looked more like a muffin that tasted like a crumble. I didn’t mind because it tasted better than I expected. It also was cranberry and not blueberry, but whatever. I’ll be back to eat and maybe I’ll tell my friends so the place isn’t so empty.

With help from J-squared: Café Bello is located in the old La Strada Building. It’s definitely not the boom boom party room we all may have remembered circa 2004. It’s a fairly new restaurant opening in early August. We walked in wanting to sit upstairs and outside but the hostess said their upstairs isn’t open on Mondays. The manager overheard this and said«All it takes is a light switch, you can sit upstairs.» He later came to our table to personally check on the service and food of his establishment. Call me impressed. The restaurant is in a large space. I’m not sure if they can fill it up completely, but perhaps they can when the word spreads. We ordered three things. First was the Margherita Pizzetta. I have to say the Pizzettas are quite good. They are a great little bite. The crust is cripsy and thin and the pizzettas aren’t very heavy. The Margherita pizza was pretty good. It has the typical ingrediants(basil, tomato and cheese — though in Italy there’s no cheese on this type of pizza) and I enjoyed it. The second pizzetta was the Bresaola, Pear, Taleggio and Italian Truffle Honey. I’m a vegetarian so we replaced the Bresaola(beef) with Mushroom and I was very surprised with how good it turned out. Lots of their dishes have truffle flavors to them and how can you not like that? We also had the Goat Cheese Risotto. It wasn’t the best risotto I’ve had but it certainly was quite good. They have a good wine menu and I was overall impressed with the service. The food is good, not great, but definitely a good place to grab a bite to eat. The food we got was not heavy which to me, was great. I need to come back for dessert. I’d love to come here for happy hour and try some of their italian sodas and pizzettas at a reduced cost. The menu changes as the season changes so it gives reason to come back. I’m a fan, but wasn’t blown away. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could.

Let’s face it, first dates can be weird, scary, or plagued with awkward moments of silence. But the staff at Caffe Bello is so awesome you could take the world’s most boring accountant here and have a great time. The bartender was great and super funny, he loosened me up about my date by sharing some of his own stories about dating drama. Our waitress told us she left her old job to work here because of the reputation of the owner. The manager came by a couple of times to greet us, so as far as the service goes, I definitely would give Caffe Bello an A++. It seems, a lot of reviews were disappointed by the service here. But this is a new establishment and as far as my experience went, I think it’s safe to say a majority of the kinks have been worked out. The food… the menu is very succinct, which is a plus because I hate spending a Godawful amount of time on the menu trying to figure out what to eat. It also shows that the chef is focused. These items are their specialty. I was very pleased with the Margherita Pizzetta, a wonderful blend of seasons and flavor. My mouth was doing a happy dance throughout the evening, it was really a great experience. All of the appetizers are great, you can’t go wrong there. Our waitress called them«Italian junk food» lol. My date got the lamb and before I knew it, it was gone. Their menu has a lot of meats so definitely not a place I would recommend bringing a model to. But if you’re hungry and ready to step outside of your Italian comfort zone, definitely check this place out! It’s new, hip and very modern. I will definitely go back!

yep, still bad. I thought since my first experience here was due to CB being newly opened, I’d give it another shot. Bad mistake. This time, bad table management, service was lacking and the food was poorly cooked. Here’s my story… A group of 8 friends thought we should meet there and catch up. I was game considering CB should have improved over the past month and I was really wanting to see if this neighborhood establishment could be a good find. What we got was a terribly long wait for a table…2 hours where we were at the bar. I don’t know about you, but waiting at the bar for 2 hours only leads to devastation and a hang over if you’re not careful. We ordered food only after asking for menus twice. I got a scallops course that was gritty and smelled rank– no excuse A friend got gummy pasta that she sent back only to have it reserved overheated(ie: microwaved) to a degree that burned her mouth — no excuse Pizzetta appetizer was cold when served The wine was from an employee’s «personal stock» as he served it to us — really? My opinion, this place ain’t going to last long in Houston. It was crowded when we arrived, but I doubt it will be for long. Ciao Caffe Bello, you won’t be missed.

Went there on a Friday with early reservations around 6:30. When we first arrived the place was about half full and the crowd was geriatric. However, as the night went on it became more crowded with a younger clientele. I like the location and the atmosphere but the food wasn’t that great. The good included the muscles/clams and the dessert. Also a very reasonably priced wine list with some bottles as cheap as $ 20. I had the chicken fried steak which was good but nothing special(I’d personally rather just order one at Hickory Hollow. I know, I know, it’s an Italian restaurant why did you order a CFS?, well many people here on Unilocal were raving about it). We had an artichoke appetizer special which was awful and the waitress could tell it was a dud when she took it away. Would I go back, ahh, probably not. There are so many other great Italian restaurants in Houston.

Not impressed with this place at all. They are going to have to work a lot harder with Dolce Vita just down the road. I won’t be going back. Ambience — 4 Food — 2 Service — 1 Parking/Location — 3 The restaurant itself is quite beautiful. It can get a bit noisy, as their layout is very open and there’s nothing to split up the sounds, but it’s really not bad. I would’ve liked to sit on the second floor but unfortunately it was closed for a private party when we went. I wanted to order a custom cocktail to start, but some of their cocktails cost more than their entrees! Sorry, but even a $ 12 cocktail as the lowest-priced item isn’t cheap. I had to skip this, which made me sad. We ordered the Burrata(I think that’s how you spell it) as our starter. This was by far the best dish we tried. It was mushrooms covered with a smooth creamy cheese and a wine sauce. Amazing! My date usually hates mushrooms but we were fighting over the last few pieces. For our entrees, he had the scallop and clams dish, while I tried the rabbit. I really did not enjoy the rabbit, at all. It came with a heavy red sausage sauce that completely overpowered the meat. Rabbit meat is supposed to have a heavier, gamier taste than, say, chicken(rabbit is closer to duck) but I couldn’t tell at all. I guess it could have been chicken, for all I knew. And the sauce itself was nothing special. I wasn’t even able to finish this dish, I just picked at it because I was hungry(and believe me, I am an eater). I ended up eating a good portion of my date’s meal, which was ok but not spectacular — but it was more edible than mine, so it had that going for it. I suppose I could’ve sent my dish back, but only if the servers had been there, which leads me to… The horrible, awful, no good, very bad service. We actually started at the bar while we waited for our table. The bartenders were downright goofy. I could see them being a lot of fun if I’d been alone and bored, but my date and I were looking for a romantic, somewhat-formal evening and we were both not impressed with the unprofessional behavior we saw at the bar. Then we moved to our table, where we saw our server just long enough to order food and — POOF — he vanished! At one point a busboy/drink person came around with the pitcher of water, and that was the last we saw until our food came out, which was not brought by our server. We ate our food pretty slowly… still, no server. We flagged down a random server to ask for our check, and then our server finally appeared to ask whether we’d enjoyed our meal or not, would we like some dessert? Truth be told, I was willing to try dessert, but I didn’t fancy waiting 20 minutes just to oder, then another 20 after that to get our check.

Service: –We were the only table around our area that did not have a glass bottle of water to pour for ourselves. When my dad first pointed out that another table had it and we didn’t to me I thought it was because they asked for bottled(like Panna). I then realized that they were not Panna bottles, or any other commercial brand, and looked at every other table. We were the only one. –Our waitress was not attentive to us and it seemed for the most part was rushing us, as she would laugh and giggle with other tables then just come look at us and walk away. I listened to another waitress at the table behind us while she told the customers what the specials were. Our waitress didn’t bother and just said these are the only salads we have here while pointing at the menu. On top of that she screwed up my pasta dish order– for the bolognese you have the option of either rigatoni or pappardelle. I asked for the pappardelle cause I honestly don’t think bolognese should be served with rigatoni as it’s supposed to be used with a tagliatelle and pappardelle is much closer to that texture. And out came the bolognese with rigatoni. Food: –They serve artisan breads to your table, the white bread is good it’s hard to screw that up. The pretzel roll’s were my favorite. The bread sticks? So F*(#4ing salty I downed my gin and tonic to get the taste out. Disgusting. –After I had to ask the waitress what their special salad, a southwest chicken caesar. Once again horrendous. The dish was grilled chicken slices on the side with tomatoes and romaine lettuce in the middle on a bed of kenels. The tomatoes had more dressing than the lettuce. The salad was very dry and bland. –Like I said, they screwed up my pasta order that I was looking forward to salvage the salad disaster. As a previous poster noted, the pasta is very chewy — not al dente. The meat sauce was eh, nothing impressive enough for me to want to ever go back. Overall…I think you get the point. I would rather go eat at La Griglia, Pronto, Da Marco(if you wanna go upscale of course), Dolce Vita, Collina’s, D’Amico’s…There are a lot more safer picks for solid Italian food. This place just seems to be the trendy hip spot for people to go to. Never again.

I was very excited to try this new place, and I wasn’t disappointed. We went on a Wednesday around 8, and it was relatively busy, but there were a lot of empty tables. I am hoping that changes, as I would really love this place to succeed! Service was great. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and explained the portion sizes/menu setup very well. We ended up getting one of the small pizzas, two of the smaller pasta portions, and one of the larger plates, and it was perfect for two people to share. The food was excellent. We started with the margarita pizza– while it wasn’t the highlight of the night, it was very good. The two pastas we ordered were the«junk food» pappardelle and the rigatoni bolognese– both were great! The pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente. The burrata combined with the tomatoes in the pappardelle was just the right amount of «creamy,» and the flavor was excellent. Bolognese is probably my favorite sauce, and this one was a very good one. I can’t remember the exact name of the large dish, but it was linguine with several types of seafood, which my husband very much enjoyed. I’m not much of a seafood person, but I did try the linguine and it was very good(and wonderfully garlicky!). Wine was well priced, as was the food. There are, unfortunately, quite a few places in Houston right now that just don’t feel worth the price– this place is not only priced well, but I definitely felt that it was worth the price, or more. The menu is very varied and interesting, and I can’t wait to go back to try other things! I will also be back for the brunch, which apparently has 9.95 bottomless bellinis!

We came in with a large group of nine. The hostess was incredibly nice and the servers were attentive. When you have such a friendly staff combined with excellent food, it makes the experience that much greater. Now for the food… The menu is broken down into three parts: pizzetas, small plates and large plates. Pizzetas: 3⁄5 — surprisingly, I enjoyed the margarita pizza more than the more fancy pizza which had a smoked beef, pears, and white cheese sauce and then drizzled with honey. The crust thin and crunchy, but not like a cracker; I liked it. Chicken Fried Steak: 5⁄5 — the breading was light and crunchy and not soggy even with the truffle gravy on top. The Romano mashed potatoes were fantastic. It was the perfect blend of cheese to potato ratio. I wished I had ordered this for my meal! The meat was so tender too. Veal Cutlet Grinder: 3.5÷5 — Buffalo mozzarella, roasted peppers and greens, on ciabatta with pesto. None of the ingredients were overpowering but the flavors put together made the sandwich quite tasty. I think I would have preferred a stronger cheese. The quality of the ingredients really showed through. Service: 4⁄5 — They forgot to add a few dishes to the receipt(and it took some time to get it corrected — my friends are an honest bunch!), but other than that, I felt the service was great. Ambiance: 5⁄5 — The setting could be great for every situation: a first date, a group, a casual dinner, a dressier dinner. I think with the location being on Westheimer, you draw in different crowds and it all fits well. I am looking forward to coming back. There were a few other dishes that looked really good. We spent so much time studying the menu because there were so many great selections!

( Unilocal limits the reviews to 5000 characters, and this review is longer. Read the full review at ) Excerpts: Rarely am I a fan of what I call«designer» pizza — I am a devoted pepperoni guy. But this pizza was outstanding — bubbly, crispy, slightly sweet crust, dense, chewy, smoky beef, creamy and herby white cheese, and the tangy bite of the pears made this a dish we’ll be reordering as soon as possible. Even my lovely bride, who is not a terribly adventurous diner, found herself drawn to this creation. A pity, because that meant I had to share it with her. But love conquered… at least this time. — We’ve always enjoyed Tony’s seafood offerings, but this was something totally different. Rich, silky, just-past-al dente scallops were blanketed in thick-sliced, earthy prosciutto, and a sharp, sour caper agresto added a bold note. Served with tomato and grilled asparagus, this small plate demonstrated convincingly that combining the deft Vallone approach with daring Dei Maggi strokes was going to lead us in some deliciously unexpected directions. — After a brief break, it was time for the entrée. I love chicken-fried steaks, and I honestly never expected to see one served at a Vallone place. Unsurprisingly, this is not a typical chicken-fried steak. Tender sirloin was hand-breaded, and topped with truffle cream gravy — the mild, soulful truffles were a nice bonus. The accompaniment for this dish was the side of whipped potatoes, highlighted with reggiano cheese. We’ve never before encountered a chicken-fried steak that spoke to us with an Italian accent, but we’re glad we tried this one. The quality of the meat alone made a huge difference, and adding the Italian accent elevated this dish to new heights. — Around this time Jeff Vallone wandered over, and said we had to try something. In this case, «something» proved to be their orecchiette pasta, a simple but unique dish composed of pasta, rapini, grape tomatoes, and breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs? The breadcrumbs were crunchy, and added a delightfully new texture to the slightly tart pasta dish, and the rapini added an assertive bitterness that was deftly offset by the acid from the tomatoes. Again, the rule of thumb: If Tony or Jeff suggests something, do not pass it up. — This remarkable meal speaks volumes about how well things can turn out when you assemble a team with culinary talent and let them do what they do best. And we were again amazed(although by now we should expect it) that a restaurateur who’s been successful for over four decades can create a new, cutting edge restaurant, and delight an audience that probably wasn’t born when he opened his first location. — Caffe Bello shows that the master hasn’t lost his touch, and that he’s assembled a team that can translate the legendary Vallone experience into one that will be embraced by a cutting-edge audience. I think that sums up Tony’s philosophy: The food will always be changing, but excellence never goes out of style
