In town for OTC, service was very good. Staff was extremely attentive. Fried pickles are nice and crisp but batter it a little bland for me personally. Chicken fried chicken was quite good. Very tender, mosist and not too much batter. Stay away from the bread pudding tho if you indulge in dessert and move on to the pecan pie.

Five stars for getting it right. The manager is friendly and affable, the food is good, and the drinks are strong. Easy to get to, fun Texan décor for out of town guests.

Cattleguard gets a solid 3.5 from me. The food was much better than I was lead to believe by some of my fellow Unilocaling friends’ reviews. We had a certificate and decided to try this place out. $ 25 off $ 45 or more. Cool… first ordered a coke which came with a carafe for the refill which I didn’t like. Bout time I’m ready for it, it’s watered down. No bueno! Next was mozzarella sticks as an app, delicious! Shared 2 dishes — fried catfish & shrimp/spinach quesadillas. The catfish was 2 pieces and they were huge. It also came with a salad & fries. I didn’t try the salad but the fries were on point too. Now the quesadillas should change their name. It was chock full of cheese, always a PLUS! But the salad shrimp inside was too small and few in numbers. Came with the usual pico/guac/cream setup. Way big portion of the actual dilla though. By this time I haven’t even gotten close to eating my half of this food but stopped to save room for dessert; to meet this min purchase. I had the pecan pie a la mode & my companion had tres leches. I don’t touch that 3 milk mess cause the soggy cake taste doesn’t work for my buds but I heard it was good. The pecan pie was good but it was reheated too hot from frozen. I don’t like the fact that it’s not made in-house was so blatant in my face. Overall I’m not anti-Cattleguard anymore. I don’t see how they stay in business cause it was a very small crowd. Even the server commented we were his first table and his shift started 90 mins prior. At any rate, I’m not rushing to return but not above doing so either. CG is ok in my books!

Gross! The Ginger chicken salad tasted like all the ingredients came from a bag or frozen. Wasn’t asked if we wanted coffee or dessert, the host came out from the back while buttoning his shirt. I did t eat my salad and the waiter asked if everything was fine and i told him. he said sorry, shrugged his shoulders and took my plate away.

The place was empty the whole time we were there. I will never return. The Restrooms were dirty. The dinner rolls were hard and tasteless. The burger I had was so, so. Started off tasting good but slowly got worse. My friend ordered a ribeye medium well & they brought it well done. The waiter did not want to be there and kept wanting to take away our plates even though we were not done.

Upon entering cattleguard we notified the parking lot and restaurant was completely empty(this should have been my biggest hint). My wife and I started with an appetizer of crab stuffed jalapeños. While we waited 20 min for our drinks we noticed that we were still the only ones at the restaurant. Once our drinks came we were served dinner rolls for the table. These rolls are not fresh. They taste like a Pillsbury knock off. We then received our appetizer. Please take note that its advertised as a crab stuffed jalapeño, we received potato salad stuffed jalapeños to which we sent back. My wife and I both ordered a steak po-boy. The steak flavor is the only reason for the extra star. When you go to a steak house and have to send back the steak because it is wrongfully cooked there is defiantly something wrong with establishment. If you are in the Houston area please locate a steak house worthy of the name and stay clear of Cattlemans.

Not good, don’t wast your money. Cheap iceberg lettuce house salad, warm Caesar salad, cheap and tasteless. My husband order a $ 30+ pepper steak, over cooked the first time, way under cook the second time, by the time the 2nd one arrived, we were done with our dinner. The veg were soak in oil, cheap bread, came with margarine not butter, just awful.

Cattleguard has something for everyone. They have a great menu that has something for everyone. Their servers are good, and their food is tasty. They have a long happy hour and the management there is good to deal with.

Ok well we gave it the old college try with this place and two strike outs. The first my wife and I had lunch here last fall and I had bought a $ 25 groupon for $ 1(cool huh! never seen that special again lol) and this time I bought another $ 30 groupon for $ 15. Both times were pretty similar slow service and bland food, and the place was both times empty(don’t know how they survive). I ordered the crab stuffed jalapeños and never tasted the crab, more like stuffing. Then my wife ordered the buffalo meat burger(not the best buffalo meat burger– Ruggles green murders them on that one) and I choose the chicken fried steak. My Cesar salad was bland and weak but the garlic mashed potatoes were pretty good. Now the chicken friend steak was huge!!! About the same size as Hickory Hollow EXCEPT… About half of it was just empty breading and a little meat which was flavorless. Don’t feel I will return here again. Way too many good restuarants in Houston to be stuck here again!

After a bed experience at Cracker Barrel, my wife and I were in search of a decent chicken fried steak. We have been to Cattleguard in the past and decided to give their«best chicken fried steak in Texas» a shot. It was pretty good! HUUUUUUGE. It was in my top 3 for chicken fried steaks; behind Goodson’s Café in Tomball, and a place up near Granberry, TX.- Buffalo Gap Steakhouse & Cantina. I would definitely stop back by Cattleguard again next time I am in the mood for a gigantic chicken fried steak.

I had been passing this restaurant almost daily for the last 4 years and kept saying I wanted to try it. Along came a $ 15 for $ 30 worth of food on Groupon, so I went for it. We went to redeem it last Friday after seeing a mid afternoon movie. We got there just after 4 pm and we were the ONLY customers there. At first we thought they weren’t open for dinner yet, but were surprised to see that they had been open since 11am. Ooops. We didn’t get to see much of the restaurant as we were seated right in front(although my husband used the men’s room and said it was like a bunker in there because of the concrete walls). It did seem to be a bit run down, but was clean and the owner who sat us and the waitress were very nice and attentive. The food itself was just ok. In a city like Houston, you can’t just be ok to make it in the restaurant business. We started off with the Four Way chips and dip. The salsa was definitely fresh and was good, but could have been spicier. The beans and guacamole were bland, and the queso tasted like the Tostitos brand in a jar. I ordered the chopped steak, which came with a small dinner salad. It was just some iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of tomato, 2 slices of cucumber, and some croutons. The chopped steak was all right, seasoned well, and cooked like I asked. However it was topped with mushrooms and onions that while tasty, were really greasy. The garlic mashed potatoes were also good at the top, but a lot of the grease from the meat and topping soaked up in the bottom of the potatoes and those didn’t taste as good. My husband got the chicken fried chicken sandwich and said it was just ok. I did notice that it only came with one slice of tomato and one slice of red onion. Really? He said the fries were the best part of his meal. I ordered a glass of wine with my meal and it was served warmer than it should have been. I have found that most restaurants do this with red wine though, not just Cattleguard. So overall it was just an ok experience. It is really not a place that we would go again and pay regular price.

It is amazing how much a place can change. This has been a good local place for years, we were just here in January and had a good meal. This time it was a change for the worse. The service was mediocre at best. We weren’t served any bread(missed this alot), never checked on us during the meal, did not offer coffee or dessert, just wanted us to pay the check and leave. Plus the quality of the food has gone down. We love their prime rib, but the portions we got were not tender, the sides were okay but the portions were smaller. I don’t know if it was bad because we came on Sunday or they don’t care about repeat business anymore. The saddest part was, this was our Anniversary and we were really looking for a special dinner, I wished I had just cooked dinner at home. I will check the reviews before we come back again. Very disappointed

Hmmm so maybe this place had an overhaul on their food because me and my boyfriend went there tonight and the food was pretty good. I had the blackened catfish and my boyfriend had the shrimp and avocado quesdillas, and the food was pretty good. Service was also very nice and attentive. Will probably go back.

I bought the half-off coupon as others did via Groupon or some other discount site. There seemed to be many others there for the same reason on Saturday afternoon. The meal started out fine, but kept getting worse and worse. One of the managers or the owner(not sure which) decided to be our waiter. The problem was that he was more interested in micromanging the staff than in being our waiter. He was rarely on the floor and checked on us less and less as more customers came in. The food wasn’t bad — it was pretty good actually — but the service was horrible and you need both to make it. And last is the duck in the parking lot. They should really get rid of it. The inside is nicely decorated and some of the seating areas along the sides look like they might be a bit romantic even. The duck outside makes it look cheap and more like a place you would bring your young children. I think our«waiter» knew we were aggravated since he gave us a gift certificate for $ 20 off our next meal. It’s pretty bad when even that doesn’t make you want to eat there again.

It has been years since I have been here. I saw a Groupon for it, so I decided to buy it and try it out again. The wife and I arrived at 5:00 Saturday and there was one family eating and a couple sitting at the bar. Not a lot of activity… so I told my wife«hmmm…Texas Roadhouse is hoppin’ at this time… this might not be good» We got waited on immediately, and our drinks were brought quickly. I liked that they brought a carafe so I can fill my own tea. I ordered the 10 oz. New York Strip cooked medium, house salad w/ranch and roasted potatoes. The salads came out quickly. Iceberg lettuce, 1 cucumber slice, 1 tomato slice, a handful of croutons piled on one side and that was it. No egg, no cheese… kinda basic salad. The plates were cleared and the main course came out. The 10 oz. steak didn’t have any seasoning on it at all. It was the total opposite of the spectrum from a seasoned Outback or Saltgrass steak. I peppered and salted it up, grabbed my knife and began cutting… sawing into my strip. It was pretty tough, and was quite red in the middle for medium. I usually get a pink when I order medium and I would call this med rare for sure. The waiter asked if I wanted it cooked more, but I decided to just go with it.(my wife’s was cooked the same and she ordered medium). The taste was ok, but I had a lot of gristle and ended up leaving quite a few scraps on my plate… as did my wife. The roasted potatoes were mixed with caramelized onions and were actually pretty good. There were good points and bad points to the visit, but I don’t think I will be going back there again because there are so many options for a good steak in this town that are much better.

Decided to check this place out after I saw it on living social and spent $ 15 on a $ 30 coupon. Was a bit apprehensive since I saw mixed reviews on Unilocal. Went with my friend on Saturday night at 7:30 and it was pretty empty, even so it took the hostess a few minutes before even acknowledging/greeting us. They had 2 live performers there playing guitars and singing which was a nice touch. Nice atmosphere. We had the quail starter which was fantastic! Perfectly seasoned, juicy, and lots of meat. Friend had the ostrich burger and I went with the buffalo. I tried a bite of the ostrich and it was decent but nothing special. I would recommended the buffalo burger instead which was delicious! My only complaint would be that buns quite big and I prefer to not have to fight through bread to get to the meat which was significantly smaller. Wanted to try the crème brûlée for dessert but was told they were out so I went with the pecan pie instead at the waiter’s suggestion. It was good but I could not finish it because it got way too sweet towards the end. Server was very attentive and friendly. I will be coming back for more of that excellent quail and to try out the rest of the menu!

The food was acceptable, and the service/management was very accommodating. I ordered the prime rib and the temperature was good, but I’ve had a better cut of meat at other places. On the upside, the portions they serve are very generous. In general this place needs a facelift but I imagine this might be difficult because business seems to be slow. The Cattleguard isn’t a restaurant that I would go out of my way to visit again, but it was decent food at a reasonable price with the 50% off coupon I had through Groupon. I wouldn’t pay full-price for their food.

AWESOMEWINGS!!! Once again AWESOMEWINGS. We only ate off of the appetizer menu when I went this past weekend and I will tell you the appetizers are off the chain, especially the wings! The Nachos, Skins, and Chicken Fingers were also way above average. The drinks were good and stiff. Will be going back to try the main courses next time. Service was good and atmosphere was country western style. Great place to stop and get some Rita’s and appetizers before the night out. If the main courses are as good as the appetizers are then they will get the 5th star from me! Oh yeah LOL at the duck! They told me it was from Batman the movie! Funny stuff!
