When this place used to be on Quitman Street it was fantastic rustic and had a homey feel now that they’ve changed locations I think they have changed management because when me and my wife went there to order we were ignored for over 20 minutes just because of the color of her skin they proceeded to help other people of Hispanic descent over us we decided to leave I will never come back to this establishment I was completely dissatisfied with how they presented their service to other people that were not of Mexican descent

Food is ok. No real competition around. Im not eating here anymore after hearing employees dont get breaks. I was told the work shifts are staight and still have to pay for your own food. No breaks and having to eat behind food prep area quickly not cool.

Went here today after reading the reviews on Unilocal and trying to find a new place to eat. We went around 3 pm so it wasn’t busy. There were 3 other families in the place so not busy. The place was nice and tables were clean. Food turned out to be decent but I agree with another Unilocaler that there are better places in the Near Northside. The service was VERY slow. When we arrived, it took a while to get drinks and we were brought salsa but no chips until we asked for them. After we did, someone brought out chips to all the tables. It appears there was only one waitress working(didn’t speak English and my Spanish was limited but we communicated ok) and maybe one person cooking? The plates were brought out one by one as they were ready. After we all had our food except for my dad, the waitress came out and told him they didn’t have the ingredients for the plate he asked for so he ended up having to order something else. Like I said, the food was good but we probably won’t return.

Typical H-Town day of discovery! Out of curiosity, I stopped at this place in the Near North End called Houston Bakery & Café(2435 Fulton) and was pleasantly surprised to find a full bakery of Mexican sweet breads and diner, all-in-one. Since it’s National Burger Day, I ordered the Hamburguesa Garza and ended up with the best Mexican burger I’ve had outside Mexico City and a definite Top 20(maybe Top 10) for Houston. Double thin but very flavorful patties, a thick slice of grilled ham, perfect guacamole, all the sides, and blessedly, the mustard/mayo was a light smear and not thick like so many other places do it. Perfect chips and salsa, extensive breakfast menu, late hours 7 days a week, a few minutes from the rail line – more reasons why the future of Near North Houston is bright.

I have always enjoyed Houston Bakery and Cafeteria, and the new location(Just a couple blocks from the old location, on Fulton) is very nice. Same great food and prices, and you no longer have to park across the street in the Fiesta parking lot! Much more open seating area, too!

I haven’t reviewed this place yet for a few reasons: 1. I got lazy 2. Trying my best to keep it local. This is a neighborhood favorite where all the locals go. It gets packed weekends during breakfast. Good food, excellent breakfast tacos, good prices. I couldn’t be happier because now they have a clean new interior plus a patio. I’m a sucker for patios… I hope they make good use of it(hint, hint). In addition to that, they now have a parking lot… so those of you who aren’t so great at parallel parking can rejoice and pull right into your very own parking spot. Until the moderators have a chance to update the location, the new address is 2435 Fulton where Rey de Pollo used to be. Apparently HISD bought up the corner where they’ve been serving up the goods for 30+ years. Don’t let this neighborhood eat slip off your radar.

I don’t get the rave. There’s so many Mexican places around here and I find this one to be so greAt. It’s looks shady and dirty. It’s a seat yourself environment. Portions are large and prices are cheap. Food is ok. I really liked the corn and flour tortilla. There’s a panaderia right in the restaurant that I would try if I come back. I just think with all the choices in the area I wouldn’t call this one the best.

This is my go-to place for mole and caldo. The place is a whole in the wall but don’t feel scared to stop-in since it’s visited regularly by cops. I typically go during weekend lunch hours, so I don’t know how it is during other times. Some of the wait staff speaks little English but it shouldn’t be an issue. They sell Mexican sweet bread, which is pretty good.

Had breakfast tacos. I am hard to please. These were amazing. They make a hardy, thick corn tortilla in house, and a soft delicious flour tortilla as well. The eggs are loosely scrambled, like a friend’s mama just made them for you. Potatoes seem boiled and lightly salted. The refried beans were definitely house made, delicious, only half smashed with plenty of whole beans in the mix. Choice of yellow cheddar or white mozzarella(both shredded) this disappointed me because it wasn’t authentic Mexican cheese, buy upon arrival, the«white cheese» totally worked for me. The hot(served both warm, and spicy) house made salsa, is not mild, but is intelligently crafted with spices, and addictive! Thick, fresh tortilla chips. Chocolate champurrado, delish. Jamaica, not way too sugary like most places. We will be back. Frequently.

I was looking for an authentic Mexican meal, this place is the deal. My Fiancé and I felt as though we took a trip across the border. The place is small but cozy and the food is great. I order a hamburger which was unn okay and he ordered taco combo thing and it was really good I actually ended up eating one of his. Order the taco combo and it is 3 dollars also they give you chips and salsa, wow HOT very HOt but good. The staff was nice and noone can beat there price. Great Job.

Great place for breakfast tacos. The place is nothing fancy. It is full of Mexicans who know it is an awesome place! Tacos are only a couple bucks each. Staff is friendly and explains the menu to you. Menu is in English and Spanish. They bring you fresh tortilla chips and salsa. The chips are home made and are the thick flour tortilla kind… very authentic. We had a chorizo/egg taco and a ground beef/egg taco. Both were awesome. Tortillas were fresh. They also have a bakery you can pick what you want… cookies and breads. This place is truly authentic. There are a few parking spots in front of the restaurant. It is across the street from the Fiesta Food Market. Bathroom is basic and not the cleanest. I would definetly return.

Delicious cheap food in a sketchy area. Across the street from Davis High School and a Fiesta. The place is staffed mostly by teenagers. Clientele is all hispanic. Their breakfast is around 3 dollars that can be ordered at anytime, not like other places that add a surcharge after breakfast hours. Their flour tortillas are killer as to be expected from a bakery that makes them fresh on the premises. I tried their pupusas and they were as good as any other Salvadoran place I’ve been to. However they are pricey at almost 5 dollars for two. It comes with a heaping serving of curtido in another bowl.

Great place for breakfast tacos or lunch. The homemade flour tortillas are perfect. On your way out the door you can satisfy that sweet tooth at their in-store bakery.

I love their super spicy salsa and usually get pupusas or their fajita gorditas! No other place I’ve gone to makes gorditas like they do. They are soft and are stuffed with beans, cheese, and meat. Unlike other places I’ve been to where they are hard and greasy. Definitely a favorite cheap spot to eat.

This place has the best chilaquiles, huevos a la mexicana and bistek a la mexicana I’ve had outside of home cooking.
