River Oaks Donuts

When you special order $ 50 worth of donuts for a birthday breakfast you don’t expect them to be cold. COLD!!! Like from the fridge cold! I tested one en route to our event and they were so hard – just bad – i tossed them and stopped at Shipley’s.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SKIP THIS PLACE.

I never met a donut I didn’t like until I had one here. Plain frosted glaze ok, but too much icing and too sweet. Lemon filled donut hole good, but cake donut hole underwhelming. Cronut inedible! A leadened hockey puck, but girl at counter was very nice (that’s why I gave 2 stars instead of 1) and gave me some other things to make up for $ 3.79 disappointment. My friend had spinach feta kolache and didn’t like it at all. Afraid not enough here to return.

If you are from up North and been looking for a place that makes a proper Cake Donut Hole I have found the place. They also make unusual donuts like one with Fruity Pebble topping. On the weekend there will be a line; they do have a drive thru. Must do if you are Cake Donut Hole Lover like me.

I have had these donuts on various occasions but this was my first time actually making it to the storefront. I have always been pleased with the donuts here but especially so of their donut holes. They really up the ante on the donut holes, you can find all sorts of them here they are stuffed and coated with different delicious toppings, these certainly arent yo grandma’s donut holes! The doughnuts themselves are quite tasty. On this particular occasion I opted for the most photogenic one, which is usually what I choose. The dough part was good and fluffy while the topping was just too overly sweet for me. Nothing really special about this particular one. There is no seating inside the place but there are 2 tables outside, mostly I saw people grab and go and they do have a drive thru! Overall, this is not my favorite donut spot but they do have a great selection here.

I’m extremely picky with my sweets, but I must say this place was a hit for me. Great coffee. Good service. I loved the selection of flavors and the brightly decorated treats. I loved the vanilla donuts. A step above your average donut shop, I’ll be back :)

This place is so good! We usually go to Krispy Kreme right by our house for our donut fix but I’m gonna start driving here instead. I had the blueberry cake, pink iced with sprinkles and my husband had the cap’n crunch, all were delicious! We’ve gone to Glazed in the past and tried their cereal donut but the reason I liked this places more is that is wasn’t sickenly sweet. I’m glad they toned down the sugar in the icing to account for the sugary cereal on top.
I gave it 4 stars for the kolache and coffee. I feel like the coffee could have been better had it been fresher. But then again we did come at 10:30 on a Sunday. Maybe during peak times it would have tasted better.

the apple fritter was sooo good! and not overglazed. good chunks of apples. yum =D. I was going to order a cronut but it was almost 4 dollars! lastly, ordered the whole wheat kolache with spinach and feta and it tasted undercooked… doughy and the filling was too salty.

I can only comment on the cake donuts and they are out of this world! The red velvet donut holes (with or without cream cheese icing) are amazing, and their donut holes are twice as big as anywhere else. So when you see them priced as .30 each, don’t freak out, they’re worth it!
The employees are super friendly as well!

They have a unique selection and the kids were excited about seeing the peeps on theirs. they didn’t eat it and honestly I didn’t finish my donuts either. The taste didn’t make me want to waste the calories.
Kolaches were pretty tasty though! The staff was helpful and friendly.

I had multiple donut holes, a great way to taste many flavors before settling on one, though really initially only intended to try out one donut. plus a croissant/​donut combo drizzled in chocolate — super worth the carbs!
Added bonus: inexpensive and no sour after taste 3 hours later, ala KK!

I really wanted to like this place because they had such high reviews and I thought that maybe I was just unlucky and ordered the wrong things, but I tried 3 different donut hole flavors and I can safely say that I’ve had better elsewhere. On the menu, it says the donut holes were about 0.30−0.35 cents and I thought it was at least a handful or more, but then I learned that they’re 0.30−0.35 cents each!
DONUT HOLES– raspberry filled, nutella filled, and blueberry
The RASPBERRY FILLED donut holes were overly sweet. The filling was heavy, fruity, and very sweet. I got 2 and that was even too much for me. The NUTELLA FILLED donut holes was just plain nutella with a donut. It was nothing spectacular. The BLUEBERRY donut holes were my favorite. It wasn’t overly sweet. Maybe I should stick to non-​filled donut holes. The donuts were moist and had a real pungent flavor of blueberries. I enjoyed them.
Before I turn away from them forever, I would like to give them another try and get the doughnuts when they’re hot and fresh. I’ll be back. Eventually.

I don’t recommend this place for their donuts. They have lots of options and variety (blueberry cake, red velvet, chocolate, pumpkin spice, glazed, etc), all in donuts or donut hole form but they were not impressive. The donut holes were 20 cents — 40 cents each. You can get one or however many you desire, but they are not good.
I do recommend if you are craving for a good kolache and don’t want to go to Kolache Factory or Shipley’s Donuts, and you’re in the area. try theirs out. They have PRASEK sausage. Super good! Try the sausage, cheese, and jalapeño one. There are no jalapenos; the sausage just has a little kick.

Love that there is a small drive-​through for the place. It’s definitely a place that promotes grab-​n-​go, and less so of a sit down place to enjoy the donuts. On a weekday morning, there are still people coming in and out to buy, but nothing too crazy. They have some coffee to sample as you decide what donuts to buy as well.
The donuts are definitely fresh, but I prefer donuts a bit smaller and fluffier. Their donuts overall are pretty tall, and the cake donuts are definitely pretty heavy and dense. I wouldn’t quite say it’s a cronut, because the layers were minimal.
Would drop by if I was in the area and craving a donut, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.

Very cool selection of different flavors! Tasted super fresh! I’ve never had a cherry donut. They had one so I tried it and it was amazing. Vanilla was good too! There’s no seating but there is a drive thru. We walked in and grabbed our donuts n such to go.
They had a pumpkin filled Cronut OMG that was the most delicious Cronut I’ve ever tasted. The pumpkin filling was something similar to an empanada. YUM. I also had a pumpkin donut with crème filling that was also YUM! The kolache we got was sausage jalapeño and cheese. And they actually put big slices of jalapeño. Not like the ones you get at Shipleys or something and it’s like tiny little micro pieces of jalapeño. These were legit, and no weiner it was Sausage, good sausage. The kolaches were definitely hand made because they were all different shapes and sizes.
Lots of selections for drinks. Milk chocolate milk water baileys everything.
The ladies there are super nice too and they know every donut every Cronut every kolache they’re good. will be back for more!!!

If you’re a donut fan, River Oaks Donuts is definitely a place you’ll want to check out. If you’re not crazy about donuts or if Dunkin/Shipley’s does it for you just fine, you can probably pass.
I had heard so, so many people rave about River Oaks Donuts, but I never made it over there before they closed. I finally decided to go before work one morning and treat my office to donuts, and before I knew it we had spent $ 40!
I do think that the Nutella Donut Holes are worth it and are really delicious. I ate half a dozen in the car with the bag in my lap because I’m impatient. The Red Velvet Donut Holes are to-​die-​for as well. The creamcheese icing is addictive.
Other than the donut holes, I’d say that their donuts are pretty basic. They’re good, but I wouldn’t go running there over a more convenient donut shop.

I had seen so many good reviews on here but they did not meet expectation. To begin, they barely had any donut options at 11am on a Thursday! I anticipated bringing a lot back to work with me but alas, they only had a few styles of donuts left, and none of them were unique.
I walked out with 1 strawberry frosted, 1 blueberry cake donut (only cake donut left), and 5 apple fritter bites (also got the last 6 of those).
They charge PER donut hole/​fritter bite that you get which was the first i’ve seen a donut place do.
Strawberry-​average at best. It was a sweet yeast donut, nothing mind blowing.
Blueberry cake-​standard, sweeter than a Shipleys blueberry which is good but still not enough blueberry kick.
Apple fritter-​very good! Sweet and still got a piece of apple in each bite. I wish I could have had more.
I might try it again if I was walking by in that area and had a sugar craving. But otherwise not running back just to find out they don’t have what I want to try.

Caution: Do not go in here without someone to tell you «no, you can’t order all the donuts»
Even with that warning, I lost my mind in this place! It was just me and the husband and we spent almost $ 15. We. The husband would be quick to say that he spent about $ 5 and I spent about $ 10. On donuts. I already had a drink, so that was purely donut money.
Everything looks amazing! They definitely have a creatively wide assortment of donuts.
I had:
— a chocolate topped croissant donut
Which at some point I’ll come to realize that I just don’t care for them — and I’ve had them at Dominique Ansel’s NY bakery. This one was ok and it didn’t come with a 90 minute line, so I guess it wins there.
— red velvet donut holes
They were ok — I wish they had a lot more cream cheese filling
— nutella donut holes
Again, left me wanting more filling
— cinnamon sugar cake holes
YES, YES, YES! I wish I had ordered a lot more of these. They are perfectly sweetened for the dough and the ratio of cinnamon to sugar is on point.
— apple fritter bites
These were my 2^nd favorite and I’d get them again — but if I’m getting 9 mini donuts for myself, the ratio would likely be 6 cinnamon sugar and 3 apple fritter bites. I’ve had apple fritters from a lot of places (it’s my mom’s favorite donut) and I’d say this one cracks the top 3 for me.
I’ll be back when I’m in Houston, but I’ll be prepared this time for the onslaught of selection. :)

I am always excited to find a donut shop that makes «cake» consistency dough. I like the heartier feel, enjoy the texture, and think the overall flavor rounds out better.
I chose one donut and made it better by grabbing 2 – 3 flavored donut holes. The old fashioned is my go-​to on any first visit to a new shop and it didn’t disappoint. The banana donut hole was creamy with a good consistency. The raspberry was tart. The lemon missed my mark a bit as it was too sweet and I hoped for more citrus, but not bad.

This place is just alright. Honestly, I prefer Shipley’s and was really let down after reading all the hype on here.
I tried about 4 different donut hole flavors, a vanilla frosted donut, and an apple fritter. The apple fritter was the best tasting out of them all, but still not out of this world by any means. I probably won’t be back.

Honestly one of my fave places in Houston. Yes, places. :)
Their Strawberry Iced donut is one of my all-​time faves. The consistency of the yeast donut is perfect with just enough sweetness in the icing. Don’t forget to get sprinkles!
Their kolaches are sooooo good. Make sure you get a Sausage & Cheese.
And please, please, please indulge in their great variety of donut holes. You will not regret it. And be sure to get the mini apple fritters!
