St. Joseph Medical Center

I would like to take this opportunity to tell everyone in the Houston area about what a great facility SJMC is. I have been a patient on multiple occasions and every single time I have received superior and compassionate care. From the doctors, to the nurses to the housekeeping staff and everyone in between. You can’t walk down those halls without an employee smiling and asking you if you need anything. Hospitals are never a great place to have to be, and we are all human. Knowing the compassion and competence that roam that facility, I will never hesitate to take myself or a loved one there!

DO NOT go here. Seriously. You want to knock on deaths door then by all means but if you like life stay the HELL away!!! There is dried blood on the furniture and floors in the ER and the rooms. Dirt, dust, boogers, feces, urine and other bodily fluids everywhere. Dead serious. My fiancé is currently in another hospital because of their surgical error and neglect. She is fighting for her life. I assume the only people on here that gave more than a star is because they were paid off and or blind possibly mentally handicapped. Idk. Please, life is precious and it’s not worth it. Especially the fact we live in a city with the best hospitals in the entire world. Choose one of those like Memorial Hermann. Meanwhile please pray for my fiancé her infection is getting worse and we’re scared to death. Thanks.

We are not in Kansas anymore Toto. Visiting Houston from Dallas ended up at St Joseph Hospital to help family member deal with crippling migraine.
Plano Presbyterian, Medical Center Plano, any of our hospitals are top flight, high quality care AND service. Fast, efficient, have protocols that quickly assess and deliver effective therapies.
After waiting almost 2 hours, doc prescribes completely ineffective therapy, presumably because they are used to drug addicts and have to be overly cautious. Facility is dirty, in need of repairs.
Go to Houston Methodist, Baylor St Luke’s or Texas Medical Center, these are the top 3 rated in US News, just wish I knew before we got here.

If you need X-​Rays, avoid this place. Although the staff is friendly, everything is very slow. It took over 1.5 hours to get an X-​Ray on a week day afternoon.

Only reason I use them is because my Dr. is here. Coming in for uterus ultrasound. No one told me
I had to have a full bladder before arriving. They’ve asked me to sit down and drink seven 8 ounce cups of water then wait until my bladder is full.
Thanks for wasting my entire morning waiting for my bladder to be full. I came early at 630 am so I could get in and out. Please train your staff, the training here is pitiful.

I had surgery here (my first) and was skeptical bc of reviews. But everything was perfect from the checking in and paying my bill to the receptionist– even the billing analyst was so nice. When I was brought back into my room the nurse could not have been nicer and had tons of experience. When she put in my IV it barely hurt and she walked me through everything. All of the doctors and the anesthesiologist introduced themselves to me and were extremely professional and courteous. After the surgery I was continued to be treated very kindly and with the utmost care and respect from all hospital employees. I could not have asked for a better first surgery experience and I highly recommend going to St Joseph.

a great experience I had on Jan 19^th when I had my mammogram. The check in was quick and efficient and the person was very friendly. The testing area was warm which was great. The tech was great with me, made sure I was comfortable, was very gentle, understanding with my disability. She was very precise to make sure she got a good X-​ray. I was very impressed with her.
The facility was very clean and fresh smelling.

My wife and I had a pleasant experience at the St Joseph Downtown location. Staff were professionals and extremely helpful, most nurses went out of their way to give a hand or help with something that was needed. I was honestly worried after reading the reviews about St Joseph, but my experience showed me something else.
I want to personally thank the Staff of Labor and Delivery here online for their outstanding support! 2^nd and 3^rd floor, also the building where patient get blood tested before surgery, thanks for making our experience a beautiful and an easy one!

I fell headfirst down a flight of stairs yesterday and was taken to this hospital as it was the closest. I have worked at hospitals the past 20 years and have also had numerous surgeries and can say without a doubt this is absolutely the worst hospital I have ever been at. The security guards were having personal conversations on speakerphone, the hospital is dirty, and the nurses at triage were arguing about who was going to triage me. Then when I finally got taken back after over an hour the physicians assistant lifted my arms and leg and told me to go home and take Motrin. And I paid an emergency room visit for that! The only staff that was nice was the lady who took me to the car in a wheelchair because I couldn’t walk on my own and we had to ask for them to get someone to do this. They wouldn’t even get me a wheelchair to take me to the back knowing I had fallen down a flight of stairs — my sister had to go find one herself and then take me back herself. Do not go to visit this hospital if you are needing anything other than a checkup. The nurses were actually making fun of one of the patients who was in the ER because they were complaining and they stated how he was not bleeding out so they didn’t understand what his problem was. I do not know how this hospital passes its inspections.

I also wish I could give this place a rating of 0. The ER is actually a danger to the patients! My friend went there a few days ago and I was with her for 7 HOURS! At one point, they had a female nursing student taking people’s temps/​blood pressure out in the hall/​waiting room. During this, she called out a woman’s name (to take her temp/​blood pressure) and a woman who had already been seen by her said that was her name. The student responded «Oh that’s you?!». Then the woman confined that it was her the student said something to the effect of «Oh thanks for speaking up. I wrote down your temp under the wrong person.» In fact, later on when my friend was inside the ER, they thought she had a really high fever (102) when in fact, her temp was normal. Her temp was taken twice by this same student and both times, my friend and I saw the actual temp on the blue machine (her temperature was normal both times). Yet for some reason, the doctors/​nurses later on thought my friend had a high fever! Which means there was another patient there who actually did have a fever of 102. Who knows if that patient actually got the proper medical attention.
The nurses/​techs are very rude and condescending. The charge nurse on duty that night, Al, was very professional. He was having personal venting sessions with the tech and bashing the doctors in front of us because he was not happy (i.e. the patient and visitor). In fact, at one point Al told my friend (the patient) directly that the doctors put her in danger! If AL had an issue with any decisions that were being made regarding the patient, he should have discussed it privately with the doctors. There is no reason to air all the behind-​the-​scenes drama among the staff in front of the patients.
I have visited other doctors at St. Jopseh (Urology, OB/​GYN, internal medicine) and never experienced anything this bad. The doctors are great. In fact, in the ER the M.D.s were amazing with my friend. But the nursing/​tech staff are awful. In additional to being rude to the patients, their behavior is actually putting people’s lives in danger.

This isn’t the worst hospital nor is the best hospital, but that the hospital personnel definitely wasn’t the nicest nor the most helpful either.
The Asian nurse on the 4^th floor of the Behavioral Health building was rather rude, prejudice, immature, and unprofessional. She assumed that I didn’t know if I had a friend to visit or not, she questioned how could I be visiting an Asian patient. Also, that the person I was visiting was incompetent, retarded, stupid, and less than human because of her situation of why she was at the behavioral health center. Now, I’ve been knowing this friend for about 8 years now and I know that she isn’t any of those things. I kept reassuring the nurse that my friend is intelligent, kind, and was probably dealing with stress of her lifestyle is to why she was here because I know those things can happen.
The nurse wouldn’t even let me visit my friend and instead wasted my visiting time answering her unnecessary questionnaire to benefit her own knowledge. Finally, after the nurse spoke to my friend’s family, the nurse gave me some time to chit chat with my friend. Of course, I asked her family for permission first before I visited her. I mean, how could have gotten her ID number or the fact that she was even in the hospital!!!
After visiting for 20 mins and not the full hour. The nurse decided that it would be better for me to call my friend, instead of visit. I didn’t have a problem with driving 30 mins from my house to visit my friend, though the nurse made it seem that way. Oh, but get this: they only have one phone for all the patients on the floor which isn’t convenient at all. Every time I would call one of the nurses would pick up and ask for the name of the patient I was trying to reach and their ID number. Once I had given them that information, they would always give me a lousy message as if someone was already using the line and to call back in 30 minutes. Every time I called back within the time limit, the phone line was always busy.
The number to reach the 4^th floor is (713) 756‑4123; I’m warning you now that you might not be able to get through.
The 4^th floor is so basic: the gathering room lacks a lot. It lacks pictures, it has just one TV on channel 2 and there isn’t any visitation tables to sit and communicate with the person you are visiting.
The best thing about this hospital was the two security guards. They were nice, very helpful, and didn’t look at you the wrong way because you were visiting someone at the behavioral health building.
They do have lockers, so you can place your things in before you go into visitation. The parking garage is close to the building, so all you have to is walk a short distance.
You are absolutely better at receiving nicer care at Bayshore Psych unit than here!

This hospital it’s my worst nightmare I curse the day that I chose this one to have my child, we came here tree times in emergency because of child heart beat was too low but the incompetent residents from here say that everything was good and the baby was moving good the fourth emergency was too late because my child was without heart beats they make my wife to have a vaginal delivery of our died baby, they know when she got our first child was by c section, and that is risky so in fact my wife finish losing 40% of his blood and almost die too for internal bleeding cause contractions open the old wounds! They refuse to take out the baby the tree times before of emergency on weeks 36 37 38 and Schedule a c section by the week 40 my baby die at the week 39! Without reason they are just a bunch of residents and the real dr if you are lucky you going to see him maybe just once the whole time i hope this horrible experience never happen to another person because it will mark your life and make you lose your hope !

DO NOT COME HERE! If I could give 0 stars I would. This is the worst service and care I have ever received. In the emergency room it took over an hr for a doctor to come in who came in for less then 30 seconds and was never seen again. Then after another 5 hours I saw a new doctor (because shifts had changed). It took hours for them to even run tests because they were out of supplies (they even ran out of blankets). Once they took blood they left it on the counter for over 4 hours. They then tried to release me without any diagnosis or help. Once they saw my frustration they had a doctor come in and diagnose me horribly incorrect so I would leave. Before this he made sure to say inappropriate and derogatory comments to myself and my parents. They prescribed me multiple medications stating that they would call and tell me which ones to stop taking once they have test results, which they never did. It took me over a week to get any information and this only happened because I went in person to the hospital as they refused to give me any information over the phone. They are now charging my insurance with close to $ 20,000 for tests which were unnecessary, drugs which were overkill, and horrible service. This is by far the worst hospital in Houston. DO NOT COME HERE.

Just plain awful!
I delivered my baby here only because of my doctor delivered at this hospital. I was in the hospital for a week, so I was able to see many problems with this hospital. The facilities are nice and new, but so is Women’s Hospital and Memorial Hermann!
Here’s a laundry list of the things that went wrong:
Foley catheter came out because it wasn’t taped down
Catheter bag almost overflowed twice in recovery because the nurse wasn’t checking it
Sitting in filth because the nurses weren’t changing the pad
Nurses admitted that they were understaffed
Nurses weren’t checking the ID bracelets on the baby to mine
Nurse took baby from me after I told her he just fell asleep after crying. Told me I could just put him to sleep again
Gave the baby a bottle nipple in the nursery instead of bringing him to me to nurse him. We found the nipple in his bassinet when she brought him to us.
After paying bills to the hospital, we were turned over to collections! Evidently this is common!
Sadly I like my doctor but will have to seriously consider if I want to go through this again!

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews. Had a surgery with 1 overnight stay earlier this month, and I have to say I was nervous, after reading so much negativity.
Pre-​surgery check-​in (2 weeks prior) was extremely smooth. Nice people, nice nurses, super easy, no waiting.
Surgery check-​in: extremely smooth, didn’t even sit in a chair to wait. They moved me through the process so easily, and each team did a very good job. From financial check-​in to pre-​surgery team to surgical team, took exactly the 2 hours they said it would.
Surgery went smoothly, and room stay was easy. Nurses were fantastic and literally in my room monitoring me throughout the night as there was a slight complication. Very nice nurses, and I didn’t have a single need for which they didn’t attend.
Food was only ok, but by the next morning, I figured out I could customize my menu, and I was able to order food that I enjoyed.
Check-​out process was just as easy. Day nurses were super nice and handled everything very well.
Hospital room was clean, quiet, and comfortable. Bed was comfortable, t.v. was good, bathroom clean, and the room was large enough with a small sofa and chair.

I had an accident and was brought to their ER by ambulance. Before they do anything for me I asked them whether my insurance cover the fees and they said they don’t know so I decided to leave the ER and I did not sign any documents and they said you are free to go and you know that when you don’t sign anything they will not go further and take care of you. I had one call one month after that I should verify with them my SSN and I was explaining that I did not get any service from them when the rude assistant at the other side of the phone hung up the phone. Today, someone called me from collection office that send the money which you have been charged from this hospital or we will freeze your account. I went to St. Joseph hospital to figure out what the heck is going on and I found that they sent the bills to my address which the ambulance has provided them but they forgot to write the apartment number so as they have not heard back from me they just easily sold my documents to collection office. In the bill that I got after I go to hospital it shows that I have received some services that I did not get. This bill shows that they had constitutional. neck, respiratory, back, skin, MS/​Extremity, Neuro, psych and head/​face examinations while the only thing that I remember is that some one take my ID and asked my age and address for consciousness confirmation which shows this hospital is good in fake documentation and bill making.
I do not recommend this hospital due to their irresponsibility for sending the bills and contacting the customer and the fake documentations they provided as the physician document.

Terrible and uncaring. The check in lady was horrific and didnt care that anyone was in pain. I will never come here again. Dont not goto this emergency room. I told the registration lady i was about to pass out and she didnt do anything but say we dont have any rooms available. Also she didnt smile at all. What a which. It was April 21 at 10am if you want to know who it was. They were by themselves.

Terrible. The nurses here are very rude and do not look like they enjoy doing their jobs. The hospital is not kept very clean, smells bad. Unknowledgable staff.

This place is disgusting, it’s ironically very unsanitary for it being a Medical Center. I am in the Women’s section the staff is rude, everything in here seems old and dirty (is old and dirty), and it is so unclean. Also, if you are an English speaker, they only play the Spanish TV in the waiting room, so that’s a con too.

I have really only used the labs and radiology departments here. I specifically use the mammography services. The facilities are kind of plain and utilitarian in terms of décor, but the people are generally really nice. They really take care of your modesty here, which is nice for women who are more body shy. They don’t keep the place freezing cold, either and that is nice. I have always had such a nice technician working with me and they do their very best to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible and act very professional. I would recommend them to others looking for a mammography center for sure.
The main facilities are pretty basic too. I like the chapel and the flyover going from the main pavillion to the Susan K Strake building is light and bright with displays of old medical instruments and such. The strange thing is as you walk across, you hear birds. They’re piping bird song in over the PA in the flyover. It’s kind of nice. The signs leading to your destination are not very good. If you get confused, ask someone. Deciphering their signs may not work.
Lastly, if you are a patient here, you can pull up to the front entrance and get your car valet parked. Then, present the ticket where you’re getting your care and they will validate it for you. Wooo hoo! Free parking downtown, I’m all over that. Otherwise, valet parking is $ 8 at the time of this review.
