This place is right on point best place for a business lunch downtown… Also, the best cajun creole food in Houston… Great concept to use the parish hall of a cathedral to provide a very open cafeteria style lunch… I have a good friend that we meet up for lunch a couple times a month and this is our go to spot… The prices are bad and the service and flavors are all on point… During peak lunch hour the line can be very long, but it moves fast and you will be in and out in no time… Best fired Catfish in Houston… Check it out… You will not be disappointed

I must admit: for cafeteria-style Cajun food, it was good. I had the gumbo, and a shrimp salad. The gumbo was spicy, with that burned butter flavor to it. One of the best gumbos I’ve had in a while. The shrimp salad was tasty as well. For the price, and in a relaxed cafeteria setting, you can’t really go wrong. I will definitely go back.

Great food to stop by. I was a little taken aback since I was going to the church to eat my lunch during my lunch break. But once you get over that fact, it’s great. I work downtown and the church is a nice walk when it’s a nice day out. I always get the chicken and sausage gumbo which they only serve mon-wed. The seafood gumbo is served thurs-fri which is not as good as the chicken and sausage in my opinion, but is still terrific. Their desserts are on a whole new level. The Italian cream cake is not overly sweet like most cakes and the frosting isn’t just pure sugar. The bread pudding with whiskey sauce is also one of my favorites, especially when they’re still warm. You can also help yourself to some bread and butter to the right(after you exit and pay). Great food, great price. They also have people bussing the tables, so no need to walk around looking where to put dirty dishes like I did.

Met my friend here for lunch today. At first I thought, wait we’re going to lunch inside a church?! Apparently, they have a ton of other locations. We decided to meet in the one in downtown on Texas Street since it was a central meeting place. I’m always hesitant about going to downtown for lunch since parking can be a nightmare. All the street parking was full so I found a lot a block down and paid $ 5 to park. I’m kind of appalled at myself for now just trying this restaurant out. Why I haven’t heard of it is beyond me?! It’s so good, it reminded me of a «Cajun Luby’s Cafeteria». The place was busy full of everyday people, some professionals on their lunch break, a group of senior citizen to a family with kids. Everyone is welcome. The food was excellent, I had the shrimp etouffe with a side of jalapeño corn bread, my friend had the chicken fried chicken special. We ate our entire meal, left happy and full. I will be back!

This was my first visit to Treebeards. The food was delicious and you could feel the Southern Hospitality. It is a good choice for reasonably priced entrees and I will definitely return.

Everyone loves Treebeards and it’s great that they have so many options. I’m a fan of their red beans and rice with sausage plus cheese and green onion. Shrimp ettoufe was pretty good too! I tried their bread pudding and it was not overly rich or sweet(in my opinion anyway). Free french bread and butter. I tried the seafood gumbo as well. It was a bit fishy for my taste but others may like it. This is my favorite place to get some old creole favorites. This location is inside a church cafeteria so don’t be shy and go straight in. The line is pretty fast and there is plenty of seating.

Quite simply the best catfish étouffée known to man. Red beans and rice w sausage delight, too. Sides are outstanding and french bread by the armload. Gluten intolerant folk need not apply.

Still haven’t had a bad thing here yet! Every choice is really good, even the catfish and I am not a fish fan! I always enjoy going here, it is really great comfort food that makes your day even better! Red Beans and Rice is always great, but their baked chicken is so freaking good and it’s healthy! Squash casserole is so good, I mean that might have to be a meal for me one day! All their vegetables are cooked to perfection! Great cafeteria style food!

Super affordable and delicious! I got a half ½ Jambalaya & ½ Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, jalapeño cornbread and a local root beer for under $ 12.

Worst restaurant. I came to Treebeards 1117 Travis st. at the Cloister when it first opened. An older heavy set black man wearing plain clothes not a uniform who works at the door of Treebeards wouldn’t let me enter because he said I have to go to box lunch before I can go to the restaurant. He then changed his explanation. I called Treebeards they said none of his explanations were true. He threatened me with his broom when I went to enter the restaurant.

Outstanding cajun food. Red beans and rice are some of the best, but the shrimp etouffe is probably the best I’ve eaten. This is served lunch only at a church location with interesting«Munich beer hall» ambience. The cornbread is delicious, however, unlimited sliced sour dough bread is available after you go through the line in the dining area. They also serve excellent carrot cake, but my fave is the«butter cake» dessert. Treebeards is a true Houston gem — if you have not been there, you must make a trip downtown to the Cloister or Market area Treebeard’s for lunch. Whenever I’m there, I buy a quart of etouffe to take home for dinner.

You wouldn’t expect the great hall of Christ Church Cathedral to contain an awesome southern restaurant. Yet there it is, Treebeard’s, in a beautiful room with its high ceiling, ornate wooden beams, and a balcony overlooking the communal tables. The combination of food and location is nothing short of spectacular. Today David and I both had chicken fried chicken with sides of red beans and rice and a green salad. We also split a bread pudding. Everything was wonderful, but we both felt the chicken fried chicken and bread pudding were the best we’ve ever had. Crazy good food. I’d give them seven stars if I could.

I dined here for lunch with my mother & sisters one busy afternoon, and it was great! In & out, with a full belly and a smile on my face — I could only think of the next opportunity to return. I had the fish(I forgot which one they served), casserole, green beans & gumbo. Everything was great, and as c.t. said, the location is very different, if not phenomenal. Go Treebeards!
