US Post Office – Julius Melcher

Show up a couple minutes after 5:30, and get «WE CLOSED! WE CLOSED!» screamed at me by a clerk.
Automated Post Machine wouldn’t dispense stamps.
Can’t wait until the USPS finally collapses, and the private parcel carriers dance on their grave.

If Newman (of the apocryphal Apartment 5F) from Seinfeld worked at a post office, this would be his post office. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about a visit to this post office.
The facilities are old, not well cared for, and resemble more of a dingy forgotten bus station in New Jack City than they should for a post office in the River Oaks area, a stone’s throw from multi-​million dollar homes and expensive «luxury» apartments.
There must be a metro bus stop nearby because the majority of people walking up and down Timmons, running parallel along the edge of the post office parking lot, appear like they absolutely do not belong in this neighborhood under any circumstances.
While they helpfully have the old school drive up big blue mailboxes outside so you can for the most part avoid going inside, there is always a wait to throw your mail into the gaping maw of the big blue box. It seems like every time I come by here to «save time» over driving a bit further to get to one of the nicer post offices nearer downtown I end up waiting an incredible long time.
Sometimes the people strolling along the sidewalks of Timmons call out to people in their cars in line to get to the blue box. Inevitably it will always be the person in the car in front of me that attempts to enter into a longwinded negotiation for a toothless blowjob from a hobo (a «blowbo» portmanteau brought into the mainstream by none other than Penny Arcade) in the middle of tossing his mail into the box and driving off so the next person can dump their mail in and move on with their life as well.
Bukowski would be both amused and embarrassed by a trip to the post office here.

Just got my 1 year old’s passport and it was painless and easy peasy! I was terrified with all the bad reviews and with a baby they can turn into the excorcist at any moment. Every single post office in the H has bad reviews FYI. Apparently you need an appt but nobody answers the phone so I took a chance and walked in. It was 9:15am, I was the first passport person there and out in 20 mins. Thank you passport lady with your fancy black rimmed glasses and lush red lips. What a great start to a day! Carribean here we come!

The most inefficient and useless post office I’ve ever been to. Here’s why:
1^st incident: I order a desk chair off Amazon using 2 day shipping. Imagine my surprise when I come home and find a slip in my mailbox that it wasn’t delivered the day it was supposed to. Here’s the reason why: The package was «TOO HEAVY» to carry up a small flight of stairs. So instead they make me (a small, 110 lb girl) come pick it up from their post office and carry it up the stairs herself WHICH I COULD TOTALLY DO. I’m sorry if I can carry that box, you should be able to carry that box. Pure laziness.
2^nd incident: I order a memory foam mattress pad from Amazon and I get a slip again that I need to go pick it up. But this time, THEY CAN’T FIND IT. They lost it. Which I don’t understand since it’s a large box. How do you just lose it? Thankfully, Amazon is a large company that can compensate me for the loss so they sent another one.
3^rd incident: I’ve ordered a special, customized gift for my mom for Christmas and paid expedited shipping to make sure it was here in time. I get an alert that it was delivered on the 19^th to my apartment (I was currently out of town). I get home on the 20^th super excited to see it and it’s nowhere to be found. Surprise! They lost ANOTHER package of mine. So I try to call this post office and no one ever answers the phone so I call the national USPS number and file a claim. I finally get through to this location the next day to ask if they got the claim that they lost my package and it was like they were completely oblivious that it was missing. So then I give them my information again since they can’t find it and give them some time to look for it. I hear nothing so I go in the next day and talk to someone who is also just as oblivious to the fact that it was missing and also can’t find it. She gives me the number of the supervisor and tells me to call in the morning. Well I’ve called 20 times this morning and NO ANSWER. So basically they lost my package and I’ve given them plenty of time to find it and they haven’t owned up to the fact that they straight up lost it. I ordered from a small company so I don’t even know if they’ll give me compensation so I hope USPS is willing to compensate me for now losing a very special christmas gift to my mom that I worked very hard to get and paid extra to get in time for christmas.
There are many more small incidents as well such as items not showing up the day they were supposed to because they’re «delayed» or whatever. But these are the three that have been the worst.
TL;DR: They lose your packages like crazy and won’t do anything to help you when it happens. They’re lazy and just won’t even deliver your packages if they’re remotely «heavy.» They never answer the phone and when they do they’re extremely rude and will interrupt you mid-​sentence. Basically, good luck getting anything done with this location.

Went to pick up a certified letter on a Tuesday afternoon. Was as easy as it gets.
Open parking in their lot.
Staff there were great.
Picked up letter in less than 5 minutes.
Couldn’t ask for more.

Typical post office. Be prepared to wait. Be prepared for no one working. Be prepared to be spoken to rudely. Be prepared for them to not be able to help at all. Bottom line: this place SUCKS.

This place sucks so badly!!!
I was *supposed* to have a package delivered to me yesterday. I was tracking the package and it had arrived at this location at 5 AM and would be delivered same day. I tried calling to see if I could just pick it up myself because I really needed the package but forget about it. Their phones are pretty much nonexistent and NEVER pick up. So, TODAY it said it would arrive at my apartment and that didn’t happen either. I literally live right around the corner from this establishment. I would walk there if someone would just pick up the damn phone so I can get my stuff.
Unbelievable.

Soooooo slow! It doesn’t seem to matter that there are 10 people in the line… the pace remains the same. It almost seems deliberate. I understand why USPS is losing money and closing locations.

I have tried to be patient with this post office but I had a package delivered on the 23^rd, which is over 10 days ago, and nobody here knows where it is and they said that it is not their problem. That it is the main post office. along with that the person in the back gave me a completely bogus telephone number in which to call them with when I came here before. I have been coming to post office for a long time. some days I enjoy the service and other days I don’t. however this package situation is really frustrating.

Our postman, Bud is simply wonderful. He is prompt, kind and goes out of his way to make sure his customers are happy. I have lived in Chicago (Lincoln Park), Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and have never experienced such professionalism and dedication in a mail delivery person. Thanks Bud! Cindy M

I’ve been inside once to buy packing materials and ship a package. It was lunch time. The lines were short and the people behind the counter were helpful. I was in and out in a jiffy. I regularly mail items here, but from the free standing drive up mailboxes outside. It’s a good neighborhood post office.

Called at 3pm to schedule an appointment for a passport. They left me on hold for a half hour until they gave me a message that says they close at 3:30pm…

This post office is close to my job and I only come here for convenience. Never satisfied with the customer service. Is it just me or do all postal service employees seem miserable?

I’m rating this place based on customer service. Both workers that I saw at this location were very courteous and respectful, as well as helpful. I feel like all USPS are the same, but what differentiates each one is the people who work there. I definitely would come here again for my mailing needs.

The day that the USPS ceases to exist will be a sad day… said no one ever. I hate going into any USPS office for exactly the reason why I’m giving this location a 1 star rating. I usually just drop my mail in the drive-​thru drop mail box, but not on this visit. This visit I needed stamps and I thought I would be in and out fairly quickly since there were only a couple cars parked in the parking lot.
I made the mistake of only bringing cash with me and no credit or debit cards on this visit. Turns out that the stamp vending machines only take plastic, no cash. I ended up standing in line to get a book of stamps and it was the longest 15 minutes of my life.
I watched the two employees just take their sweet time helping the customers that they were with. Keeping in mind that there are 7 work stations and only 2 employees were working. This is our government hard at work every day. I’m hoping that the other 5 stations were closed because there just isn’t enough business to pay 5 more employees to work as slow as snails.
I literally waited for one employee to help the 2 people in front of me because the other employee was individually postmarking certified mail for a guy that had about 15 letters. By the time I got to the counter I was frustrated and irritated that 15 minutes of my life was sucked away by standing in line at USPS.
Waiting inside these offices is about as close to jail as you can get. It’s depressing, painted white with old tile floors and/​or old carpet, lots of mean looking employees that have a face like they are going postal and hate their jobs, and generally smell weird.
Considering that parcel centers and grocery stores are now handling a lot of USPS process without the attitude and lines, I think this was my first and last trip in to buy stamps at any USPS.

So far so good.
I came here on a Tuesday at 3 PM to schedule an appointment for a passport. This is after trying 3 other post offices that treated me like crap or wouldn’t answer their phone. Those three being Demoss, Unity, and Downtown PO’s.
First thing I noticed was the amount of staff. This PO was staffed better than the other ones I’d been to. I was called quickly and I told them that I needed to schedule a passport appointment. The lady got her binder out, asked what date. I told her what date and that was it.
The other PO had said they were booked until a month and a half, or that they couldn’t book an appointment past 2 weeks, or some other bull excuse. This PO was very efficient and I hope that the passport appointment goes well.

One star because it’s literally the only passport agency in the area. Another star simply because Unilocal’s much nicer than I am.
If you’re applying for or renewing a passport, make sure you fill out all the necessary forms and follow the instructions [found here:
. The employees won’t be happy to see you anyway, so trust me, you definitely don’t want to worsen the situation with a hearty dose of public humiliation. Also, book early — when I called this location, the earliest open slot was two weeks later. I’m positive it’s just a «government formality» though, as I still had to wait 30 minutes past my appointment time to finally be helped. One good thing about this location is they can take your passport photo on-​site for an additional $ 15, so you can take care of that first before handing over your paperwork and paying your dues. For some reason, the clerk had me pay for my passport with a personal check and then asked me to pay the service fee with my card (luckily, I brought both). I have no idea why they want you to take care of it that way, but if there’s anything I’ve learned about dealing with government-​run facilities, it’s 1) come prepared, 2) don’t ask questions, 3) nod and say «yes ma’am/yes sir.» It tends to make this painful process go by a lot faster — I was done in 15 minutes, on top of 45 minutes of waiting, of course.
Being efficient doesn’t excuse the employees from being grade-​A jerks though. My heart went out to a young couple in front of me who was having the hardest time trying to calm their baby down for his passport photo. The parents were obviously embarrassed and frazzled, the baby was obviously uncomfortable and distressed, and the only thing these heartless ignoramuses could say was, «You can’t hold him that way in his photo, tuck in his shirt, make him stop crying. NEXT! You can come back once your kid is ready to cooperate.» seriously, wtf? I made sure to offer a gentle smile and reassuring pat on the arm as I walked past them.
No wonder people hate post offices so much.

its a post office where it has the meanest employees ever… its a convenient place it’s just there…

This post office isn’t on my home turf but instead on my work. Since most of the time the most I ever mail is my Netflix I’ll usually just drop it off here. They have a nice convenient drive by drop off box. Can’t go wrong with that.
But the main thing I enjoy about this place; automatic postal machine! When I worked as a Law Clerk in Boston, I got real familiar with one of these. When I moved to TX, I was on a hunt to find one. For some odd reason not ever post office I found had one, but this place does. Never again shall I wait in line to mail a package or even buy stamps. Mr. APM will do it for me.
One down side is when people use the machine and really don’t know what they are doing. I guess we are all n00bs at some point.
