I am a community gardener here, and I am so grateful to be part of such a loving, knowledgeable, open community. There are approximately 200 plots and their respective owners who grow organic fruits, vegetables, and ornamental flowers. The knowledge base of the gardeners is outstanding for a new gardener like myself, and everyone is willing to share. Check out the website for more information if you are interested in getting involved!

I would like to help the HB garden — with pure, organic fertilizer. Can’t find this wonderful fertilizer in stores. RAINBOWFARMSFERTILIZER deals with organic mealworm castings, no filler, no blends of harmful toxins, just great natural fertilizer and foliar spray. I don’t sell it. . I make it! 50% discount on dry or liquid.

I can’t believe there are people criticizing community gardens! Gardens bring people together. Gardening is a pastime that anyone with a little time and patience can participate in, no matter the age, income or health. Raised bed systems(a planter on stilts) allow even those confined to wheelchairs to get involved in gardening. Everyone loves being outside on a nice summer day, and gardens provide a great excuse for that! Not to mention nutrition. Did you know fruits and viggies you raise in your own garden are often more nutritious than those you buy at the supermarket? And gardening has been proven an effective way for city kids to get interested in fruits and veggies. When kids grow the veggies themselves, they are more likely to eat fresh, non-processed foods at home. Plus, community gardens are good for the environment, reducing the need to ship produce thousands of miles from Mexico and other foreign lands. Reduced carbon emissions are good for the entire planet. Garden tasks, like hoeing, digging, and even harvesting, can provide as much exercise as a workout at the gym! And a garden makes a neighborhood beautiful.

While that information you state may be true, let me give you my opinion of this so-called«community garden for the citizens of Huntington Beach.» For the people who live next to it, it is a nuisance. We have all been sick because of the garden with many, many sinus infections and respiratory infections. We were deliberately uninformed about the whole garden project. The people on the board are the rudest people and have no regard for the homeowners. So while it might be nice for some, it has made our lives a living hell. They call it «a community garden,» but it’s really a private garden for the gardeners. We’ve tried to deal with the people on the board, the city council and the mayor, himself. They just don’t care.

Finally, HB has its first community garden! From their website :)… «The Huntington Beach Community Garden(HBCG) is a voluntary non-profit organization founded from a desire to create an organic, self-sufficient public garden for the citizens of Huntington Beach. This grassroots organization is made up gardening enthusiasts, business professionals, teacher, master gardeners and community organizers who share the common vision of promoting urban gardening and greening in Huntington Beach.» One thing I do know for sure… A great group of people helping to establish and maintain a community garden!
