The variety in this little space blows me away. Even if you’re not into raising chickens, or even goats, they still have something for you. Wanna make your own cheese or soap? They’ve got a kit for that. Looking for some natural soap? They’ve got that too. A funky t-shirt with a chicken on it? You betcha. Have you always been curious about composting? They’ve got the answers and supplies. The list goes on and on. You have to go in to really get a good feel for all the things. The people are knowledgeable and friendly. Stop by to say hi to the chicks. And if you’re so inclined, buy a chandelier for your coop. Who knew chickens had made style?

I didn’t buy anything here but I walked around. It’s smaller than I was expecting from my googling and exploration of its website. Biked here from downtown but I missed the chicken coop tour. Seems like a perfect place for urban farmers, which is not me, but hey to each his/her own!

This store sells stuff that is just SO cute and kitschy cool… if you’re into farm/nature type stuff. I seriously LOVE the blown-glass birds and the chicken kitchen towels. However, what this shop is really all about is making your own food. Here’s just some of what I saw: Logs inoculated with mushroom spores to grow your own mushrooms Chicken coops Chicken feeders Chicken FEED(including bags of meal worms) Books about raising chickens Books about maple sugaring Maple sugaring supplies Books about fermenting foods Kits for making your own cheese Kitchen composters In the spring, they’re going to be selling raised beds and more outdoors items. Check this shop out when you’re hunting around for unique Christmas gifts. For older kids especially… who wouldn’t get a weird thrill out of making(and eating) their OWN home-made cheese? There are plenty of items that aren’t directly related to the urban homestead movement but rather are super cool décor. It’s across the street from Lava Lips, so you can hit 2 shops on the same block and have a beer at Upland or Sinking Ship when you’re done. There is parking in the lot across 49th St. or you can park on the street. There’s a step up to get in, be aware if you use a wheelchair. It’s located in the same building as the vet clinic at 49th and College.

Agrarian is an Urban Homestead and Supply Store that recently opened to aid the growing number of urban farmers in their endeavors. We learned about the number of people in urban Indy who are starting to raise their own chickens. This reminds me of growing up, but there have been some advancements in the years since my family raised chickens. Say hello to the Chicken Tractor; a chicken coop on wheels so you can move it around and let the chickens ferttilize the yard. Genius! Also available were composting books and equipment as well as beekeeping supplies.
