Not sure why it’s called a hot dog place. I had one. One was enough. It was negative one star to me. The star that I’m taking off of my review. But the burgers! The best in Indy. Pricey, yes. But so tasty that I will be back for more of those. Did I mention that it should be called DJ’s Burger Joint?

Finally stopped in here to try a dog. It seems like it took forever for this location to open… or are they just never busy? Oh well, less wait time for me. I walked right in, ordered, and had my food in like 5 minutes. The dining room was clean and the staff was nice. I ordered a chili dog, a corn dog, fries and onion rings… I was hungry. The chili dog was okay I’ve had better at the hot dog carts downtown though. The corn dog was really… corny? Like fresh sweet cornbread that maybe wasn’t done enough. The fries were meh and the onion rings surprised me at how good they were. For my small feast it came to $ 18 and some change with a drink. It was okay. Once in a while I get in the mood for a hot dog and this place isn’t a bad choice. I’m sure I’ll be back.

First this place needs help with hot dog geography… Jersey is famous for a hot dog called«rippers» which are deep fried dogs. Atlanta is famous for their hot dogs with coleslaw. Not chili, cheddar cheese and onion which is the dog on every street corner in Detroit called Coney Island which is the same but almost smothered in chili. I had the Chicago dog which was good interpretation with their own twist of adding cucumber. There are no cucumbers on hot dogs in Chi Town. Only complaint is tomatoes should be sliced not diced up and the bun was steamed way too much making it too soggy. I also had the New York dog it was good but in New York the sauerkraut is cooked with beer. But every hot dog place in NYC basically has two choices one like above and the true New York dog has steamed onions in a bit of tomato paste. That is the true new York favorite but I haven’t seen it outside NYC or the 5 boroughs. Also the new York dog itself is different with a snappier skin and spices. Like Nathan’s, Sabarett, or papaya kings.

I was on the Southside running an errand and got my usual weekend craving for a new(at least to me) restaurant that I could Unilocal.I looked around and spied DJ’s Hotdog Company, a Central Indiana chain with locations in Greenwood, Beech Grove, Avon, on East 96th Street, and on Michigan Road. I will point out that their website has some inconsistency as one page lists a downtown location, while the homepage does not. So, who knows? Unless you’re incredibly slow on the uptake, you can probably guess that they specialize in, wait for it, hotdogs! DJ’s has a variety of «Big City» Hotdogs(essentially specialty hotdogs patterned after their regions or cities) along with a build-your-own deal with all the toppings that hotdog connoisseurs love. You can combo them for an extra $ 2.49 including drink and your choice of several sides. They also serve hamburgers, available also as a combo, and they also have a build-your-own option. They also offer polish sausage, italian sausage, tenderloin, and a walking taco(which I’ve heard us footless people are not allowed to have). I went with a cheeseburger with swiss cheese, but otherwise plain. I decided to go with a combo and have some fries along with my usual unsweet iced tea. The entire bill came in under $ 10.00. I must admit that I’m always a bit concerned when I detour from an establishment’s specialty, but I definitely made a good choice. While the burger is on the smallish side, it was fresh, well-cooked, and quite tasty. I was honestly a little surprised. The french fries are of the crinkle-cut variety. While they’re a little straightforward, DJ’s gives you a nice sized order and they complemented the burger quite nicely. It was definitely a pleasing meal. The drinks were self-serve and, of course, this made my usual refill a no-brainer. A couple of notes — DJ’s does have a couple of clearly marked accessible parking spots, but it’s interesting that the door right next to them has a step going into the restaurant. Fortunately, they have another entrance that actually serves as the main entrance and it is perfectly accessible. While the interior is generally wheelchair friendly, I did notice that the tables are fairly tightly packed in and at one point there was a couple sitting at a table that sort of blocked the beverage area from anyone in a wheelchair. It worked out, but could definitely be a problem. However, here’s where DJ’s really earns a 4-star rather than a 3-star — While I was sitting there enjoying my late lunch, I watched a hearing impaired individual come in. The response involved a lot of note writing that was followed by someone who was either a manager or an owner who seemed to have some level of experience dealing with hearing impairment and really helped quite a bit. When this happens, I’m always one to watch how staff responds. I didn’t sense the usual discomfort or the awkward service, but I saw friendly and dignified service that didn’t rush even as the line started to build up. I’ve often said that these situations resolve themselves if the staff handle things appropriately — in other words, you don’t get impatient customers if the staff are friendly and focused on customer service. These young ladies all did an excellent job. As an adult with a disability myself, it very much made me want to continue taking my business to DJ’s. While I can’t quite get myself to call this a 5-star experience, the combination of top notch customer service along with good food at a good price allows me to consider this easily one of your better fast-food style options.

Thought I would try this place. Was not what I expected. prices were outrageously high for hot dogs. My meal which was a walking taco fries and drink was almost 12.00! For a person who gets 5 buck lunches on her lunch hour this was alot. Walking taco was good. Service was crappy and thats being honest. Went to get my coke out of fountain machine and it tasted like club soda… yuck! When I went up to tell the person at the counter she made it seem like I was crazy… kept giving me dirty looks while she attempted to fix it still telling her co workers that she didnt think anything was wrong. Why have a poster advertising good service when you have snippy co workers, that and the prices… yeah I dont think I will try it again.

Good food fast and with smiling service. Even though DJ’s Hot Dogs are named as such, you should check out their burgers. Delicious!

The Chicago dog was good. The lack of fresh homemade chips was a complete disappointment. After years of having those chips at the Greenwood location it just didn’t seem worth it to have a hot dog without the chips. We probably will not patron the new location because of the lack of the chip machine. It’s a nice, clean restaurant but the chips really complimented the dog nicely and made it more than just a hot dog place to us.

DJ’s near IUPUI was a staple while I was in school and I had similar hopes for this south side location… Suffice to say, it delivered. The dogs are hot, the toppings are fresh and the drinks are nicely cold. The fries are crispy and delicious, but the coleslaw is somehow both watery and unduly spicy. It’s okay for tackling a craving while on the go, but not somewhere I’d take a date — the interior is clean, though sparse, and rather underwhelming as a whole. Regardless, I’ll be back.

The stars are for the staff. Friendly and knowledgable. Unfortunately the food was lacking. The hotdogs were lukewarm and tasted like the hotdogs from school lunch. Poppy seed bun was incredibly soggy, the Italian beef was served barely warm. Extremely overpriced and the quality is subpar. I have literally had better tasting hotdogs from the roller grill at the gas station.

They have discovered how to make Itailian Beef the way it is cooked and served in Chicago! Right here on the southside of Indianapolis! What a treat! Service was out standing! Clean and upbeat place to grab a quick bite to eat!
