Pizzology stands out amongst other pizza restaurants in downtown Indianapolis. Some of you reading this review might be thinking, «What makes this place so great?». Well, allow me to demonstrate the ways in which this location shines bright: (1) Customer service — My friend and I visited Pizzology during a busy weekend filled with events. The restaurant was packed with people and we were told the wait for a table would be around 20 minutes. Undeterred, I gave the hostess my telephone number to reserve our spot. Despite the high volume of patrons, the hostess was very pleasant, friendly and communicated with everyone effectively. Remarkably, my friend and I waited only seven minutes to be seated(awesome!). Once we seated, our waiter went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. There was never a point during our meal in which my friend and I wanted for anything! If our drinks looked low, the waiter filled it without any prompting. If our napkins were scarce, the waiter brought us some more. I wish I could recall his name because he was so amazing that he needs a separate review all together. Additionally, the rest of the staff at the restaurant were great and made me feel appreciated as a patron. Food — Pizzology’s pizzas are so delicious ! Their tomato sauce is one of the best sauces that I have come across and really sets the foundation for a great meal. All the ingredients are fresh and there are great options to create-your-own pizzas. The menu is reasonably priced and is worth the penny! Atmosphere– I absolutely enjoyed dining in the restaurant. I can recall times in the past in which I visited a restaurant, only to be disappointed in its atmosphere. At Pizzology, staff make sure that your experience is pleasant. The restaurant seems to recognize that patrons have other dining options and makes sure to show its appreciates to patrons who support their establishment. Ultimately, Pizzology is a great place to dine with friends. I will definitely come back!

Food is good. but prepare to wait. Our order took long time to come. We ordered the chicken pizza and starters of bread sticks.

I’d been wanting to stop in here for some time now, so we decided to hit it up for a quick bite before a concert on a Thursday night. I think we got there around 6 and it was not at all busy(maybe another half dozen couples/small groups). The décor is clean, modern, and welcoming. The hostess was friendly and efficient. Our server was a little low on enthusiasm and personality, but he got the job done. We had to ask for a draft list when we were seated. It wasn’t included with the rest of the menu pieces, which I thought was a little odd. We felt a little rushed to make a selection because the server was standing there while we perused the list for the first time and tried to make up our minds. That’s really my only negative critique of the place. I can’t for the life of me remember what kind of pizza I got, but I recall having read a review beforehand where the reviewer found the pizza to be bland. I didn’t find that to be the case at all. I liked the thickness and chewiness of the crust(it was on the thin side of medium thickness). My husband and I each got one of their personal pizzas. He got to eat a slice of mine because I got kind of full by the end, but in general, it was the perfect amount. The toppings were fresh and tasty. I also noted that the pizzas came out fast! That may be the reason for the smaller crowd — sheer speed of service. Despite the speed, I didn’t feel rushed through my meal. Overall, given the price and the cozy setting on Mass Ave., I think I’ll either be back there soon or trying the Carmel location before too long. It’s kind of a chore to find decent pizza in Indianapolis(in my opinion), but Pizzology is definitely going to a top spot on our go-to list for pizza cravings.

Extremely casual atmosphere. $ 5 beers and the selection is good. Personal pizzas are also available for $ 8 – 9.50 and they are tasty. We ordered the Napoli and the Saint. Both were great–

I’ve been wanting to try Pizzology for quite some time. Tried one night with a friend but Mass Ave was just crazy and neither of us could find parking so we went elsewhere. Tonight was the opposite, I had planned to go elsewhere for dinner but couldn’t find parking there so drove down to this end of Mass Ave and found a spot right out front. I really wanted to love Pizzology but I just couldn’t. I was immediately seated but when I walked in and said a table for 1, I kind of got that sympathetic look like it was sad. I have no problem going out to eat by myself and usually get lost people watching or in a good book while I eat, so I am not a big fan of that look! I was then seated at a 4 top, which did feel a bit awkward when there were several 2 top tables around that they could have seated me at instead. The waitress took a bit to get to me and by the time she made it to take my drink order I had already pretty much decided, pending her suggestion on a pizza, what I wanted to eat. It was my first visit so I should never be ready before I see my server for the first time(or maybe that is just my opinion!). I ordered a chop salad, which was ok, and then asked her opinion of pizzas and ended up going with her suggestion of the White Devil. Salad came out pretty quickly, but my glass was mostly empty by the time she brought my salad and she didn’t ask if I wanted a refill. Took a few minutes after I had finished my salad before my pizza came, which is expected with the wood oven pizzas and it looked delicious. I will say the flavors were pretty good although I was expecting something other than what looked like shaved white button mushrooms which have no flavor. The middle of the pizza was not really done and I’m sure some of that has to do with the garlic fondue that was loaded on it! I still had not been asked if I wanted more to drink at this point and in fact she only stopped by when bringing food and then finally when I was down to my final piece of pizza she stopped by and asked if I would like more to drink. I don’t know if it was because I was by myself, or reading a book on my phone, or some other reason but she just did not check in. The pizza and salad were ok but nothing that I couldn’t live without. I won’t come back for a meal by myself or make the suggestion to anyone to return but I would come back if it is where someone else wanted to go.

When we first moved to Indy, we tried several pizza places and I was convinced that this was a good pizza desert. In particular, the other popular place near mass ave was… just bad, to be kind. Then we tried pizzaology. While some of the speciality pizzas have an overloaded toppings to crust/sauce/cheese ratio, the pepperoni is among the best I’ve had.

I’ve been here a few times. The service is good, but the pizza is just okay. I appreciate the appeal of an artisan pizza baking over an open flame, but I think the pizza toppings lack flavor. A good analogy for this pizza… it’s like ordering a pizza and getting a salad with fat free/light dressing. Obviously my taste is different than yours. But when I consume a pizza, I want to feel self-loathing and shame. Jockamo’s still has my heart

Tried this place for the first time today after driving past it for a year. It was nice inside and the staff was friendly. They had butcher paper on the tables so we got crayons to draw on it while we waited. I ordered an Alpha King on draft and they had a nice selection of wines as well. Everything sounded very good. We ended up ordering breadsticks and a pizza called the pepperoni piquante. The breadsticks didn’t come out until our pizza did because of a mixup but they took them off our bill without us even saying anything about it. The breadsticks were great. They came with marinara and a homemade Parmesan sauce. The pizza had pepperoni, these really nice tasting red peppers, fresh cheese, and the crust was cooked perfectly in the wood-burning oven. Some of the best pizza I’ve had in awhile. Will definitely be returning.

Do you ever turn into a kid again when you spend time with your adult siblings? Caught in the rain while showing my out-of-town sister around downtown by bike, I suggested we take shelter in Pizzology. We sat by the window on the high seats and took full advantage of the paper tablecloths with the provided crayons while we waited for our pizza to arrive. I’m sipping my Italian soda and swinging my legs like a six year old, when suddenly our masterpiece is delivered. The roasted Brussels sprouts, caramelized onions, sauce Mornay, and local goat cheese send a clarion call for my grown-up self to return and appreciate the flavors in all their sophisticated glory. As I chew thoughtfully, the adult in me also appreciates Chef Neal’s commitment to ethical sourcing and slow food principles.(They have the Snail of Approval). Luckily, this introspective and mature moment didn’t last long enough to keep us from ordering the chocolate olive oil cake. After such an indulgence, my carefree youthful attitude returned in full force as we ran squealing through the downpour back to our bikes, finally arriving home utterly drenched but full and happy.

We dined here with a large group for supper club on a weekday. I understand that serving a large group can be a challenge, but I still left disappointed with the service. We were there for over an hour and the server had not asked if we would like to order. Someone from our party let the manager know, but this did not prompt the manager to check on us. Nobody explained the menu. The water guy, on the other hand, was on it. We had to wait awhile for pizza, but had plenty of water refills. The other tricky part, which was by no means our server’s fault, was that their computer system would not split individual items. Since their pizza’s only come in one size, most of us shared a pizza with one other person. This resulted in the server spending another 45 minutes doing some cash register calculus trying to figure out how to make the checks fair without splitting evenly. Again, not his fault. Now onto the food… I was pretty full of bread by the time pizza arrived, but I must say, that one piece I ate was good. It was even better the next day for lunch. The warm ricotta app was tasty, but could have used a bit of salt. The Italian soda was delicious. I also had gelato and the portion size was enough to share. Overall good food, but not good for large groups.

Here for lunch today, solo style with my Sci fi book of the moment. Lunch time on a Monday, seated immediately with parking right in front so not busy at all. I ordered from the lunch menu, $ 11 for side salad and pizza. I chose the red sauce base(I think it is called ‘Rossi’) with pepperoni, spinach & pepper dew peppers. The salad was fresh though a bit salty(olives). The pizza was delicious. You can definitely tell the ingredient are fresh and it is made fresh, the brief wait is well worth it. It was a little heavy on the olive oil but still delicious. This is not a heavy crust, cake like, weigh you down pizza. It is light, fresh and full flavor and texture. Will definitely be back. Oh, the atmosphere is very nice. Sat along the bench against the window. Very nice place!!!

Went for dinner tonight. We got seats at the bar at 7 on a Saturday night with no trouble. Bar staff were friendly and helpful. We split the squash & polenta appetizer, which was very good. Then split a white pizza called The Saint. Also very good, albeit oniony! I liked the food, and will be back to at least try the hot ricotta appetizer. And probably one of their meat pies. Cool place to hang out! Prices were very reasonable. Total bill(including cocktails) of $ 40, yes! But my favorite Indy pizza is a little further down mass ave.

Last night was surprisingly my first visit to Pizzology(which is odd considering pizza is my main food group). I heard mixed to low reviews about their pizzas so I never took the time to check it out myself. My fiancé and I wanted to try something new for our 4th anniversary and figured why not give it a go. We wanted to try the Devour Downtown deal(two salads, a pizza, and a dessert for $ 30) but opted to go with just a pizza and some breadsticks. We got the margherita pizza and were both pleasantly surprised. Their pizza is classic wood-fired with traditional and fresh ingredients. All the specialty pizzas on the menu sounded delicious(totally going to try the Brussel sprout pizza next time) and the starters even more so. My only draw back was that their beers seemed a tad overpriced($ 6.25 for a pint). I look forward to going back and trying another pizza!

I went to Pizzology for the first time for lunch during the week with coworkers. It wasn’t very busy at the time. We sat next to windows so we had a great view of Mass Ave. I’m sure during the summer/weekends it is a fun view. Most of us ordered the lunch special which consisted of soup or salad and also a personal pizza(of which you could get any of their pizzas). Most of us opted for that; one person ordered a full size pizza(which was enough for 2 – 3 people, so nice for leftovers for one!). I had the salad(chop salad), and it was delicious. The ingredients(gorgonzola, grape tomatoes, olives…) were very fresh, and there was an ample amount of toppings so you didn’t get a lot of bites of just plain lettuce. Others who had the soup also enjoyed it. I ordered the Baby Cheesus pizza(lol). It was seriously a cheese lover’s dream pizza! Local Foxglove cream cheese, parmesan, and mozzarella make for a delicious and uniquely flavored plain cheese pizza. I’ve seen others complain about burnt crust, but it is like Blaze or any other oven-fired pizza. Our lunch took a while, so I guess that was the only downside(although I was not in a hurry to get back to work ;)). This isn’t the best pizza I’ve had(Chicago homegirl here!), butI will definitely return when I’m in the Mass Ave. area.

I have been a fan of Pizzology since they opened their Carmel location. The Homemade Sausage is amazing. It’s my go to selection along with a large chop salad to split. We have tried a variety of their pizzas and haven’t had anything we didn’t like. Seasonal selections on the appetizer menu rotate. They used to have zuchinni fritters that were awesome, wish they would bring those back. Order the sidecar of sauces to help use up that last bit of crust. Mix the garlic and mornay together… perfection. Good selection or wine, beer, and drinks. It’s kid friendly, but I prefer to enjoy without my toddler.

Indianapolis must be full of philistines — it pains me to read reviews complaining about the black spots on the pizza crust, and it pained me to hear our poor server warning us about them, and suggesting that they could undercook our pizzas for us if we were afraid of a little blackening on our pizza crust. Well, I guess it must not be *too* full of philistines, because places like Pizzology do manage to survive and thrive, turning out legit wood-fired pizza with nice toppings like a house-made sausage and loads of shaved fennel. I have nits to pick, like a slight undersalting of the pizza, and a mornay dipping sauce that was embarrassingly lumpy(and not that tasty anyway). But I won’t dwell on them. You should go to pizzology, share a chopped salad, and order yourself some very good pizza — and be sure to assure them that you want it cooked properly and aren’t afraid of a little charring.

Okay so this will be a mixture of so many different times that I’ve been to Pizzology – lunch and dinner! I’ve been raving about Pizzology, just because I love how delicious their pizza is. Plain and simple. But for $ 11 at lunch, you get a pretty big appetizer salad(chopped salad, with romaine, Gorgonzola chunks, olives, tomatoes and shallots with a lemon vinaigrette), a drink and your own pizza – whaaaaaat?! So like my dear friend Lou, I really appreciate a place that can master a simple S&P – sausage and pepperoni. But it’s more than that. They have crumbly fennel sausage and thick yet tiny pepperoni that goes such a long way. So the first few times I went for lunch, I understood that their pizzas were grilled/baked in this giant brick oven and whatnot. The second to last time I went there, my pizza was slightly burnt(which they warn you about, just in cases…) So the LAST time I went, I came for dinner with some friends, and I asked for the pizza to be lightly baked, just to see if they’d do it. And oh my god, they did it. And their pizza was magical. It was perfectly cooked, the toppings were delectable and the crust was the right amount of chewy goodness… I might need to go back ASAP! You know… Just to see if the magic will always remain. :)

Way dig the chopped salad, and that the crust is so thin on the pizza. Love the little pepperoni with jalapeño. Love the big windows, nice cocktails and friendly staff.

After hearing mixed reviews about Pizzology we decided to give it a try. Well we have now been back 4 times! Love it. We have always been greeted and sat quickly. I love the aroma of Pizzology — wood fire dough. So yummy. The staff has always been very nice and made recommendations when asked. The Italian Mussels — very good. You want extra bread to make sure you get every last drop of the flavorful broth. The serving size is perfect to share. The aromatics used to make this dish work perfect — like Sonny and Cher in the early days. The warm ricotta is served hot — be warned, you need to blow on it a bit. It of course comes with grilled bread — my new favorite thing! We have tried a number of pizzas — The Saint(add sausage), homemade sausage, and our favorite — Salsiccia. Love the crunch of the giardiniera followed up with the spicy of the fresno chilies. Enjoy the patio when you visit. I really do hate Indiana winters but love their summers. Sunny days are to be enjoyed and what better place than a patio. Make it even better — a glass of wine. The wine list is full of great options. Enjoy Pizzology — we sure did.
