I believe this business is no longer in operation. Their phone line is disconnected. I tried ordering by mail but received no reply. However someone fraudulently obtained my credit card number so I had to change credit cards. I believe it probably happened as a result of sending my credit card number in a letter to Shaker Shops West, a business that is probably not in operation.

This little shop sells reproductions of Shaker-style furniture, baskets, boxes, and other handmade, mostly wooden products. I stumbled upon it quite by accident when on a day trip in and around Point Reyes. I was pretty intrigued the moment I saw the name on the sign — Shakers? Here? Really? I was under the impression that this was a cult/sect that had pretty much died out due to the combination of their devotion to celibacy(not a good recruiting tool) and the fact that they can no longer adopt orphans at will(their solution for their anti-procreation problem) to constitute future generations of ascetic woodworkmanship. I’ll admit that I was a little disappointed that the place isn’t run by or stocked by real Shakers at all, but people who have a great respect for their work ethic and a fondness for the aesthetic of the Shakers’ avowedly practical products. Presumably the owners are less interested in the celibacy part of the deal. In any case, the furniture looked quite nice and they apparently do custom work. The baskets, ovular boxes, etc. had a certain charm too, I suppose. Would I buy something here? Probably not, although the uncle in me was tempted by some of the simple yet very cool wooden toys. The shop is only open two days a week, but they sell their products online as well. I think the physical location is more of a workshop than anything and this is a predominantly online business. Kind of ironic, given Shakers’ low-tech and local communalism. Anyway, if you happen by on a day when the shop is open, it’s worth a peek.
