Best ever! We hosted a meeting of equine vets in the area and used Freds as our on-location catering company. We had about 75 people there and EVERYONE loved this BBQ. We are on our way back for another meetings and have every intention on using them once again!

This is a five star for an old joint! Fred was super friendly and passionate about his food. This place is all original from the 80’s. The brisket was great! Home made potato salad was also outstanding.

This meat is soooo tender! Best beef brisket I’ve ever had. This is my second day in a row. The beef is awesome. The chicken is so good. The sides all compliment the entrée. The cake and the banana pudding is to die for. 5 Stars!

I like this place but for the price, I don’t think it’s worth it. I’ve been going here at least seven years while working in Irving and I can tell you it’s definitely changed. The buns, for the sandwiches, have gotten smaller and they’re definitely putting less on it for a $ 5.00 sandwich. The owners are great people and you can tell they definitely enjoy what they are doing but for a $ 10.00 lunch, I still leave hungry. I also would not suggest if you are in a hurry.

Rate hidden bbq gem in Irving. This place is pretty good and I was pleasantly surprised. The sausage was amazing and though I only had the potato salad and corn, the rest of the sides looked equally delicious. The ribs are mediocre but the brisket looked good. The sauce is all pretty amazing. My one complaint is how long they take to serve you. They are a little unorganized and move at the speed of which they cook that delicious meet. So be ready to edit and have patience. Also the price is pretty steep unless you get their specials. My two meat combo with two doses ran a cool $ 17.95. Ouch, I will be back but will try their lunch portions.

Great BBQ, the loaded potato was good. I have had better in other places but this is a solid place to eat. Service is great and friendly. There is a cozy feel. Portions are big. Price is very fair.

I’m in Irving on business and had to find some dinner. In TX, so BBQ was on my mind. Found Freds on Unilocal and saw a lot of good and a couple of bad reviews. Here’s my take: — Kind of shabby Texas-style décor — Slightly confusing menu but if you’re a tourist like me you can point at pictures — The lady who served me was as sweet as she was patient as I asked question after question — I spoke the Fred when I checked out and he is a national treasure — I had the«baked potato» platter(pictured in the icon for Freds) with brisket, sausage, beans, sauce and who know’s what else — Best meal I’ve had on this trip and I’ve been eating my way from San Antonio to Austin to Waco to the Big D. If you’re getting take out(I’d recommend this option) and staying in the vicinity of the Mandarin Oriental, visit Las Colinas Beverages on the way back for the best selection of craft-beers I’ve seen in the Lone Star State. The bottom line: If you like old time BBQ(not the current fashion of craft smoking), you’ll love Freds.

I usually don’t like to give bad reviews. I like to think people might enjoy the food/place even if I didn’t. I try to be positive. Unfortunately, this place struck a nerve. When I entered I waited in a two-person line for a good 10 – 15 minutes. Before i arrived I envisioned a mass of delectable sides on my plate but while waiting on my sandwich I couldn’t pick out one side that looked decent. I went with the mac and cheese since that’s pretty difficult to mess up. I finally received my «sandwich» and went to pay out. The staff was friendly enough. My scoop of macaroni and cheese and my bite-sized bbq sandwich plus drink was $ 10. I sat down and started on the mac and cheese. I’m not sure where they find cheesewater but thats what the macaroni comes in. I had half before I had to stop. The one thing that could turn this whole experience around was the bbq sandwich. I was feeling good so I had faith(the defining theme of this restaurant). While chewing the sandwich I tried not to make eye contact with anyone else in the place as they would undoubtedly know I wasn’t enjoying the food. I tried another sad bite and it was worse than the last. I decided to cut my losses and cleanse my palette with the finer quality meat of A Quiktrip hot dog. I’m sure some people really enjoy this place. That’s totally fine. However, it is not a 4 star restaurant and I couldn’t be an accomplice to this mistake.

Best BBQ ribs I’ve had in Texas! And the staff was so sweet! I had big bobs plate with ribs, side of Mac n cheese, and green beans! The meat just fell off the bone. So good!

3 different menu systems!!! The«Daily Special» which tells the price but not what’s on it… The chalkboard which tells what a 2 item plate costs… but not what the items available are… Pictures above the service line with Plate #1, Plate #2 etc. but without prices… Kinda funny… Food was … Meh

Friendly helpful people, delicious food, and a unique, non franchise/chain family atmosphere. I was in town on business and had to stop in and try the #1 plate. Glad I made the trip to Fred’s

It took me having lunch at Fred’s pit barbeque to realize that I don’t like barbeque restaurants. Let’s not deny that bbq joints maintain a culture of down home cooking that isn’t any better than anything else. You can find enough people to along with Fred himself, to say that his bar b-q recipe is the best, this side of the Pecos. If you’re hungry enough, anything tastes great. What this place did is solidify the fact that bbq places are just a racket. I mean, would it hurt them to offer a wider selection of green foods other than green beans? A plate of brisket, texas toast, a small serving of mac and cheese, potatoes, green beans and cabbage with a coke and tea was double what it should have cost. It’s just not that good. And then there’s gospel music in the background, spreading more garbage ideology, which made the«dining» experience even less palettable, like I’m gonna need some preaching to cure me of the cancer this food is gonna give me. Gross. Won’t be going to any bar-b-cue places anymore.

Absolutely awful went in the other day had ribs and brisket, potato salad and beans the brisket was so overcooked it was just a huck of mush. the ribs had no flavor at all seem like they’d been around for a few weeks the potato salad tasted like vinegar and the beans were pork and beans out of a can would never waste my money again!!!

Stuffed potato 9.45 It was good but not special enough to get 4* Cobbler serving was small for 2.95 Also, I LOVE pie(and by extension, cobbler) and the cobbler earns a 1*. Mushy crust, little flavor. Would not make a trip to eat here again. If I did I would stick to bbq special(get a 1 meat sandwich for $ 2.50 on Monday — with the purchase of a sandwich)

Been going to Fred’s since 1998. I was initiated with the Fully Loaded Baked Spud. One word«WOW». The biggest spud I ever saw, Brisket, Sausage, Beans, Peppers, Onions, and more! My co-worker said to Leon«The owner of Freds(Everyone thinks his name if Fred)», «Hurt Him» ! The meal was outstanding and I could not finish it. I later drove from Allen, Tx to Irving with my family(About 40 miles) and we have been going to Fred’s every since. Leon, Queenie(wife), and his daughter have been running this place for a very long time, and when I go he Fred’s with the Family, it’s like an old family reunion. They treat you like family… their family. Go…Eat…and Enjoy! As a matter of fact… I think I’ll gather up the family and go now !!!

Fred’s is the real deal. Old school dining room. Cafeteria-style serving line with old green lunch trays as old as I am. Delicious brisket. Very good ribs. Yummy sides. The loaded baked potatoes is ridiculous. Love the food. Love the«old cool» dining experience. Love the very nice, welcoming people. We’ll be back… soon.

Great prices and great selection. The brisket was awesome. I prefer my BBQ sauce to have a little heat/kick to it but it had good flavor. The tater salad was tangy and pretty good. Fred is a doll! So kind and wonderful to talk to. The peach cobbler is home made and delicious!!!

Probably more 3 star than 4, but I am upgrading for nostalgic reasons: My family ate the family style platter many a Sunday after church over in Casa View. This is an original Fred’s, purchased by Leon years back, and it appears to have remained true to its roots from back in the 60’s and 70’s. While it could use a good scrubbing, I love the mostly original interior. Also, seems the AC is either struggling, or too costly to operate, as its a bit warm inside, and judging from all the fans, probably stays that way. Still, I would likely come back, if for nothing else the hot links– a difficult thing to find these days. I was disappointed in the potato salad– way too creamy with few lumps of potato. BBQ beans were good, as I recall them from 40 years ago. Rest of the sides looked a bit tired. In summary, if your just looking for good BBQ, move down the road to Pappa’s. But If you want to take the trip down memory lane, be sure to drop in here.
