I go through town about twice a year on business and usually stay overnight to visit friends. Usually in small towns the food is good because it has to be – they survive off the locals. I do not understand why this place survives. Granted, there isn’t much to choose from, but there are other choices and if you can find one, go there. These people are right about the waits. I don’t understand why it can take so long to get your food even when there aren’t many people there, but it is always overlong. The food is adequate – not bad but certainly not anything to write sonnets about – and while the prices aren’t exorbitant I think they are a little high for what you get and for how long it takes to get it. I’m not sure who is who there. There always seems to be a ton of people behind the counter and I get the impression that they are all pretty much related by blood or marriage which is not to say they are mouth breathers but something there just does not work. They are individually quite nice but I’d rather have someone surly and belligerent and get a better plate, a faster plate and better quality on it than a nice lady calling me «Honey». It’s a shame as it’s a cute little place but my father, a career food guy specializing in redoing menus and personnel, would have a field day in this place.

Food was ok. When we were there their computers were down, and they were not coping with that well, but we weren’t in a hurry thankfully.

This is a hospitality for friendliness and giving review ! We stopped in Christmas Eve for a coffee only and as we were out of town, our waitress wished us a very merry Christmas and gave us a living little Xmas tree ! It was so cute ! Thank you, Cheryl’s diner and Sandy — we will be back!

We came here for breakfast with our kids on a recent visit to Kernville. We stood in the entry, not knowing if we were supposed to wait or seat ourselves. Several employees looked at us when we walked in, walked by us and went about their business. Not one greeting. Finally, after about a minute, one of them looked at us without a smile and said we could seat ourselves. Mmmkay… seemed like we could have been told that from the get-go. So, after getting settled we were offered coffee and were told our server would be right over. We waited. And waited. It was strange, as there were several other waitstaff present, and I couldn’t see that any one of them was totally busy or hustling, one seemed to be texting. So I asked the nice young girl who gave us our coffee if I had heard her correctly. Well, at that moment a woman standing near the counter piped up and said she was our server and she’d be right over. She was nice and all, but really, the wait was odd and seemed more out of nonchalance than from her being really busy. Maybe this slow motion is just how this diner rolls? I don’t know. Anyway, once we ordered our food came rather quickly and the blueberry pancakes were good, the bacon crisp. Coffee refills were offered often. Overall a nice meal, but between the prices(sort of high really) and those two awkward instances of rather lackluster customer care in the beginning, I don’t think we would return. I think we’d try the Cracked Egg for breakfast next time we are in Kernville. Too bad, because I really wanted to love this diner after I saw a clip with Cheryl in it on a feature the L.A. Times did on the river and how tourists are not showing up due to the drought. We showed up and I wish our experience would have been a bit better.

A true gem on the Kern River. I have been riding to Kernville annually for at least ten years. Cheryl’s is one part of each enjoyable trip. Good home-style cooking and friendly service.

As a local, I’ve eaten here a few times and was impressed once. Food just ok, but on a whim bought a ‘homemade’ pie. Cream on top right out of a container tasteless, and came with small wad of hair. Last time.

Totally standard fare — but great service. Really friendly wait staff… but the food was very plain. They have a cute patio and it is very clean. Food = 2 Staff + location = 4.

Food is pretty good maybe a little high on price for what you’ll get. I would’ve given a higher review except the fact that this restaurant charges 3 dollars more for garden patties on their burgers when the beef is what costs them more. The fact that they can’t substitute for free something that’s cheaper to get is why they get two stars.

Had a late lunch at the patio. Food was okay. Reasonable priced and filling. Portions were generous. It is right on the center of town. Lots of parking on the street. Free Wifi just ask for the password.

My must-visit restaurant every time i stop by the Lake. This is one of the great diner in the heart of Kernville. I suggest anyone who visits Kern County, they need to stop by here for some amazing food. I’ve had their steak and egg breakfast previously and that was simply amazing. This time, i decided to get Corned Beef Hash with country style potatoes and Over Medium Egg. It was tender, juicy, very beefy with the mixture of egg yolk… simply amazing. When you go inside, the diner atmosphere does not get any better than this place. On top of the atmosphere, the service you get here is just.excellent. Our server, Patti took care of us like we were her kids, made sure we get all of our needs and very friendly. If you are looking to dine in a classy, fancy restaurant, this is not the place to go. This is where you want go for some good ol’ American, home-made, diner food. You will not be disappointed.

What can I say but Wow ! We came here from Los Angeles to check out our usual campground and decided to stop in town to grab a bite before heading back. The fact that they were pet friendly was awesome! The waitress was nice and she treated my doggie like a patron with her own doggie bowl and a meat patty(that was purchased with no salt) The food was amazing my parents ordered a chili dog, my dad the mountain burger and myself a western burger! Huge portions for a reasonable price will come back when I get back in July!

What a great little small town Diner! I ate here while I was staying in-town. The servers were friendly, the food great tasting and fresh. Also had some of the best mashed potatoes I’ve had in quite some time here. I’ll be sure to stop-in again the next time I’m in-town!

My gf and I tried this breakfast place out for the first time on or way out of kern from Camping for a couple days… my bacon and eggs was delicious. The bacon was spectacular… they buy it locally so I doubt you’ll find something exactly like it. Let’s just say I cleared my plate and I don’t usually do so… My gf had got the French toast overall pretty good. The bar was pretty full when we walked in so I’m sure a lot of people love this place and for good reason. Food came pretty quick and the staff/server Renea was really nice and treated me like a local. I will be back… Next time I wanna try the chicken fried steak. :] thx Cheryl’s diner you guys are awesome.

Kernsville’s very own Denny’s. They have the same thing nothing really special about this place except that it’s in the rural area of California. I ended up ordering their special of the day(or was it for the week). Which was strawberry crêpe. It was too sweet. Tasted like it contained strawberry jam. It had powdered sugar drizzled plus whipped cream, too much sugar. Their egg Benedict seem decent because all of my friends who ordered the egg Benedict was satisfied.
