Great food, tacos, burritos, tortas, unusual meats. Food is fresh and servers are kind. You can eat outdoors or take it with you. Just a little hole in the wall. The owners are appreciative of the business.

A little hard to find but right off the main drag in Kettleman City. An old school mom and pop Mexican store that can seem a little sketchy but worth the effort. We had Carne asada tacos, rice, beans, carne asada torta and Mexican fries which were all good! The lady working the counter is very nice and offers suggestions to get your order just right. We ate outside on the picnic tables but it was blazing hot, only other option is to eat in your car. Take the chance, you will be pleasantly suprised.

Authentic and delicious food — perfect for one of those MUSTMAKE stops on trips. Great service — made us laugh plenty, Guadalupe was pleasantly humorous. Location: has large tables to sit at outside with shade. Enjoy a nice breeze and an occasional bird or two while enjoying delicious food. One stop shop– Drinks, meat, candy, other items… He even checked up on us OUTSIDE to see if any of us needed anything … Excellent!

Authentic al pastor tacos were awesome. Get a beer at the mini mart a ½ block east. Sit outside and enjoy a sublime meal. Life doesn’t get much better in Kettleman City:)

Worth the extra 3 minute drive past the soul-less fast-food options, Taqueria is a hole in the wall — it’s a like a bodega with a small market. It feels a little sketchy at night, but the purveyor is super nice and friendly. We had tacos and burritos and chicharron. The burrito was meh…(the wrap was a little dry, pastor was good, but it was a little dry) — no comparison to El Farolito in SF or anywhere in Sf for that matter. The tacos were decent — much better than Taco Bell, but not the best by a long shot. But it’s definitely worth the extra few minutes — cuz the soul less fastfood on I-5 can make one batty.

Welcome to the best mom’s and pops corner store in central California. This place is in the middle of nowhere. If you get off the exit skip the In N out and Carl’s Jr. Go down the street for about a mile make a left and you will find the best pastor tacos I’ve ever had in California. Salsa, spices, flavoring, all on point. Their burritos are Fire. Tortas are grilled to perfection. And tacos are pricey but absolutely amazing. They dress them perfectly & you don’t need additional salsa, onions, NADA. BEPREPAREDTOHAVETHEBESTTRAVELERS Meal right on Highway 5! Definitely a spicy pick me up on this boring ass drive. I wouldn’t go here alone, definitely dine with friends. Outdoor seating does not have lights at night. Eat in your car. Order everything and try it all, you’ll thank me later. P. s. Bring your own water

Fantastic taqueria that’s not too far off the freeway! Service was great, and our order was ready in under five minutes, which is convenient if you’ve got to get back on the road. Meat was very well seasoned, spicy, and authentic. I’ll definitely stop again the next time I’m driving to LA!

What a great find! Thanks Unilocalers. This will be a must stop on our trips back and forth from LA to SF. friendly service and great burritos. He was nice enough to do a combo of asada and pastor for us and we washed it down with some great tasting Jamaica. Green sauce had a great Taste, the red one made me Get a refill of Jamaica.

Wow. This place is great! I’m a SoCal native who went to school and lived in the Bay for several years. Driving up and down the 5 was a regular event for me, but oh, I now realize I was doing it wrong all along. I would zip right by Kettleman City to avoid the massive congestion – besides, all I’m skipping is fast food chains, right? WRONG. The place: Getting off at Kettleman and going a second beyond the giant rest stop by the freeway and just into Kettleman City proper you can make a left and immediately arrive at the very modest Taqueria Y Carniceria Mexico. First, to be clear, this place is not a standalone restaurant, it is a little kitchen tacked onto a local convenience store. Be not dismayed by its appearance. Go, eat, and be happy.(Just maybe find a different place to go to the bathroom – their facilities aren’t choice) The food: Taqueria Y Carniceria Mexico is authentic, fast, VERY cheap, and truly delicious. My lady love and I had our stomachs filled on just $ 10 of their great food. An al pastor torta for me and a pollo burrito for her. Wonderful and not too heavy. Another reviewer hit the nail on the head lamenting the Chipotle-induced shift in burritos toward being cylinders of pure carbohydrates. This place, my friends, still knows how it’s done. In summary: Taqueria Y Carniceria Mexico should be the stop of choice for any Californian moving up or down our state’s main artery. The accommodations are far from luxury, but that food can’t be beat. Do what we did: grab your grub, drive a second to park at one of the super packed fast food places, and laugh at the people waiting in line for trash while you enjoy a great Mexican meal that isn’t pretending to be anything other than what it is – Happy New Year!

Not very good at all. Burrito mediocre at best. Too strong lettuce taste. No indoor seating. Nice family it seems. Cheap but… What’s all the hype? Estoy confundido.

On a long drive from Flagstaff to the Bay Area, I turned to Unilocal to help me find somewhere to eat that wasn’t your typical side of I-5 fast food joint. This place caught my eye! My dad and I enjoyed chicken tacos, a carnitas torta and horchatas outside on a balmy evening… The perfect road trip detour. Seriously, if you are stopping to eat in Kettleman City, drive the extra mile down the road for some real authentic cooking. In & Out will be waiting for you at your next stop.

Thanks to fellow Unilocalers we found this jewel. I had 3 tacos and soda. My buddy had burrito and soda. Total was $ 10.75. Food was excellent and the owners were very nice. Can’t believe I’m saying this but skip the nearby In N Out and head here!

AREYOUKIDDINGME??? Ladies and gentlemen, this is it. This is the taqueria you’re been searching for. I’ve lived in LA and spent nearly as much time in San Francisco, but this place has both those cities and all of their«Top 10 Best Burrito/Taco/Whatever» contenders beat. And it’s in a tiny Central Valley town!!! The first thing I saw when I walked in were beautiful, golden chicharrones the size of my head. The second thing I saw was the owner stirring up a huge cauldron of bubbling carnitas. They use lard and they’re not afraid to do it in plain sight! That’s a sign of a legit operation. I got a carne asada burrito, and holy cow. First of all, let me go on a little rant: THEYDIDNTOVER-PLUMPTHEBURRITOWITHRICE!!! It seems like ever since Chipotle took over the world with their 2⁄3 rice burritos, mom-n-pop taquerias have changed their burritos to be more ricey, as well. And that’s not a good thing. It masks the meat, serves as insulation between the different components that were meant to meld together, and is one-note. This spot doesn’t fall into that trap, which may or may not have to do with the fact that there’s not a Chipotle for 200 miles(just saying). Anyways, the amount of rice was PERFECT, it was freshly made, not soggy, and well-spiced. The refried beans were also fresh, had enough but not too much salt, and we’re not greasy. The tortilla was warmed on the griddle(always a huge plus). And that meat. Ohhhh that meat. I haven’t ever had such intensely-marinated carne asada before. It was an intense flavor married perfectly with the rest of the burrito components. AND the meat was chopped into a great size – not too big that you have to gnaw rather than chew, and not too small that you’re basically eating ground beef. Quite possibly the best burrito I’ve ever had. I also got an al pastor torta, and although I thought it couldn’t possibly beat the burrito, it did. Hands-down the best torta I’ve ever had. The often-underlooked star(in my opinion) of the torta is the roll, and this one was a knock out of the park. It was sweet and fluffy, and probably only baked a couple of hours before. They buttered the roll healthily and slapped it on the grill to give the insides a great toastiness without any bitter char. The al pastor was better than any I’ve ever had – marinated with what seemed like the orange juice usually associated with cochinita and incredibly juicy. I’ve always associated al pastor with being a bit dried out(I just assumed that came with being roasted on a trompo), but the meat on my torta taught me otherwise. Mingle that juice with the refried beans, lettuce, tomato, and salsa, and my tastebuds were overloaded with savory pleasure. Like with the burrito, I was surprised by how greasy it wasn’t. This ain’t your late-night taco truck food, folks. I love that stuff more than most people, but this has taken everything I enjoy about Mexican food to another level. About once a year you’ll discover some restaurant that blows your mind. This is that place for me. I just can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a true hidden gem and a spot I’m always going to bring up and recommend to anybody traveling up or down the I-5. So yes! If you pass Kettleman City you’re doing it wrong. Pull a U-turn over the median, exit the freeway, and get your grub on. You’ll thank me later.

Superb breakfast burrito!!! Great beans, rice, ham, egg, potato, cheese(?), and the red hot sauce was perfect to my standards(and I’ve tasted a lot of red sauce). The red sauce was so fresh it was warm.
