I stopped into Steve’s after the lunch rush, so the place was empty except one other patron. So, we didn’t have to wait too long in line or for our food to come out. The staff was not overly friendly or talkative, but they politely took our order. As far as the food, I don’t know what it was about it, but the chili dog I ordered was THEBEST I’ve ever had. The hot dog was all beef, the chili was perfect, and the bun was toasted. Flippin’ delicious! If ever in town again, I’ll be back:)

Bad service, and everything else. Apparently they don’t know what a real restaurant is. They do not seem to have clue about health standards either. Like they put a to go order in a used Walmart bag. They can not cope with having many customers, they are not friendly. My sandwich was supposed to be a panini on sour dough, Instead it was a sandwich on plain bread and never saw the panini grill. Food servings are very small for the price charged. You can get better food and service anywhere else in town. We will never go back and I think they should be visited by the health department ASAP.

I went there for a quick bite after working at TSU. I had the pulled pork sandwich and bacon/potato soup. Unfortunately both were pretty bad. The pulled pork was obviously frozen/pre-made and it tasted of freezer burn, the«fried» onions were also pre-made/packaged and tasted as such. I took two bites of it and politely discarded it. The soup was the same, pre-made/pre-packaged and it tasted like really cheap canned soup. My colleagues did enjoy their turkey sandwich, so there’s that. I will likely give this place one more shot in the future.

Simple sandwiches/salads. Fresh desserts. Simple, classic place in a town full of greasy chains.

Very yummy tuna salad, really like the chipotle ranch dressing on my salad. Super clean, if it hadn’t been lent I may have indulged in a dessert offering, the carrot cake looked especially yummy.

Steve’s serves good food and is a solid lunch hour bet during Saturdays. My own issue — the long wait time. It took quite some time to get our food in relation to the number of customers they had. One couple received their food extremely late. Regardless of this complaint, they make some tasty sandwiches. It made me happy that chips were included in the price.

Stopped here when in town on business. Food was good, but too expensive for what you get. 8 dollars a person for a small sandwich, chips and a drink isn’t great. Again food was good, however the service was slow and the value is not good. Too bad really. Small town eateries are usually more memorable.

The closest thing to Panera Bread Co. around, and that’s a compliment! The atmosphere is charming and the staff is friendly. Let’s get down to the deli: their sandwiches are very good and handmade. Each sandwich has a good balance between flavor and texture with a warm finish. I just wish they would give me more of it! The sandwiches are small and with a standard sandwich and chips, you almost certainly will want dessert. Speaking of, their desserts are pretty good. They have quite a variety of pies and other assorted pastries so your sweet tooth will be satisfied. For the price(cheap I might add($ 6.50 for a sandwich)), Steve’s is a good place for lunch and excellent for a mid-afternoon snack.

$ 7 for a sandwich or wrap and a bag of Miss Vickie’s chips. Good atmosphere, friendly staff and a tasty meal. They use deli meat for most stuff. The Tuesday bread bowl with cheesy chicken enchilada soup is great. The pulled pork sandwich is wonderful, topped with crispy onions and provolone cheese on an onion bun.

This is a great downtown location for lunch. The Danno, chicken salad, potato salad, and bread pudding are personal favorites. I also spent mornings/afternoons here studying and its a cute place that is quiet for the most part. I really haven’t had anything to eat here that I didn’t like and it is a very popular place among the medical school crowd.

Environment is very nice, and the deserts are pretty good… but the food leaves much to be desired, especially at the price! The price wouldn’t necessarily be bad if you actually got an amount worth what you pay. I tried going there a few times with a couple months in between just to see if maybe I had a bad set of experiences, but every time I’m completely underwhelmed. I’ve heard the sandwiches described a number of times as, «nothing I couldn’t make at home with what’s in my fridge now,» and I feel that’s pretty spot on; even the wraps are dry and disappointing. The soup is very runny and unfilling(and the amount of soup you get is really pretty scant). Even the name«Garden Deli» is misleading… I feel there’s very little«garden» about it… for the health nuts out there, it’s very carb heavy. Sad to say, I don’t feel it is the food that drives this place, it’s the truly stellar environment. The owner is a fantastic businessman and I give him major props for his attention to customers. They do deliver, which is a plus as well, and they are very student friendly with coffee and wifi. They also have a nice patio area in the summer. So, great set-up, poor food.

I got a half turkey sandwich(with veggies and spicy mustard) on wheat bread and a small salad with raspberry vinegarette. All in all, it was good but not entirely large portions or enough to fill most people. Still yummy though. For desert we split a chocolate velvet pie slice and strawberry pie. The former was amazing all around, and the latter was good too although super sweet so if that’s not your thing then know that. Nice place too, and nice people working there. PS Carrot cake was amazing! and cinnamon buns!(5 star desserts)

I have heard a lot of good things about Steve’s, so I was excited to try their sandwiches. A friend and I ordered to go — he got a Truman turk sandwich, and I got a veggie wrap. The panini was TINY, and it looked like something I could make at home. It tasted ok, but I was a little surprised that it cost $ 6.00. The veggie wrap was awful. The mix of vegetables didn’t go well together, and the entire thing lacked flavor. I’ve had plenty of vegetarian sandwiches and wraps at other restaurants that are tasty. I was really disappointed. We also tried a croissant, which was good, but the one saving grace(at least for me) was the coconut cream pie. YUM. Seriously, wow. That was delicious. I would give Steve’s 2⁄5 stars, but the pie bumped it up to 3⁄5 stars. I would definitely go back to try the other desserts, though I don’t know how open I am to trying a different sandwich.

Well: I love the idea of a «deli»(this is not just a synonym for sandwich shop, btw!)…and I am 100% for encouraging restuaranteurs in a town that desperately needs choices. And the owner and staff here are VERY nice and inviting. But… In the three times I have eaten here: the food is really inadequate for the prices – portions small and prices do not reflect that – thinly-sliced commercial breads(if they bake on-site you could fool me), very sparse meats and other of the more expensive fillings. For example: A «deli» is a delicatessen – it is a tradition associated with German immigrants in the late 19th C, and implies quality prepared meats… so I was hoping that they could get the Reuben right: a classic Reuben(check it out ANYWHERE in NewYork, etc) involves a mountain of sauerkraut, an inch thick pile of pastrami, generous amount of 1000-Island dressing(usually) on Rye. As we are in the Midwest, I asked for extra kraut: this arrived with something on the order of a teaspoon extra(you could see the bread underneath)., and literally NO visible dressing. When I requested more of the former and SOME of the latter I got a grudging bit more kraut(which is a VERY cheap ingredient) and a small container of some weirdly yellow condiment(1000Island is pink – ALWAYS). The pastrami was forgettable. Add this to the lack of options for a «side»(a bag of chips?! – no pickles, no salad, not even carrot sticks!)…hate to say it, but from here on out, it is Gyros for me until the sushi guys reopen.

I wasint sure what to expect when walking in to this deli. Im not sure if im nieve but when there is a deli in the name I am expecting cold cuts, meat or other type of items in the display case. There was nothing deli like about this place, basically only a small display of some desserts.

Clean, fresh, good deli sandwiches. Best place in Kirksville to grab a quick lunch. The desserts are excellent as well as the sandwiches. I love their potato salad. Inviting atmosphere and great food. Definitely really clean and well kept.

Excellent! Wonderful! Amazing! I was there this weekend for an event at Truman, needed something quick, but healthy. This was it! There are meaty and/or «unhealthy» options I am sure, but my vegeterian son and I were right at home — we had the Veggie Panini(there was another veg sandwich, too). It was excellent — lots of hummus, big pieces of artichoke, lots of black olives, pickles, cheese, grilled just right — no grease to be found! I had the Side Salad, which was really pretty big, had«spring mix» or «field greens» as lettuce, carrot coins, strips of different colored peppers, bits of broccoli. Amazing! And I could write pages about their desserts. We bought a raspberry scone before we left, finished it before we got to car, and had to go back for another! Their huge cinnamon rolls, key lime pie, blueberry scone, carrot cake — all wonderful(we took some home). And the staff was friendly and smiling. Thank you, Steve for your great place!

Let me start by saying that Steve is a really friendly guy, maybe a little too friendly at times, but it is great to see someone who is so passionate. Unfortunately the bread seems like the stuff you would buy at the store which keeps the sandwiches from being as good as they could be. The flavor is pretty good though and the establishment is well kept and clean, a rarity in Kirksville.

This place has the best Reuben in town, has great deserts, makes orders fast and hot — and it’s always super-busy for the quality of the food and the excellent service. If you’re there, be sure to pick up some of their pie and catch some of the cheesecake. There’s only one gripe I have about the place — Steve and several of the other employees are way too anxious about HOW great the food is; I love their food and I’m a repeat customer. It’s okay to not buzz by the table and ask if the food’s up to par.

I have eaten here twice, and my experiences here only get better and better. Steve and Farmer Jay were really accommodating and frequently checked to see how me and a friend were doing and how our food tasted. My only gripe was that the woman taking our order was a bit snarky. I had a Nathan’s hot dog, which is always delicious. The desserts looked great. Portions were a little bit smaller than I expected, but ended up being the perfect amount of tasty food. The second time I ate at the Deli, Steve asked how our food was, and I told him that everything was great, though, my croissant didn’t live up to my standards. He immediately refunded me the price of the croissant, to which I put into the tip jar. I feel really great supporting this local business. The décor and atmosphere was very inviting. I would recommend this place to anyone.
