If you need to learn to swing dance, then Joel is your man! I’ve taken classes from different people, but I must say Joel is the best. The qualities that make him such a great instructor is that he is:
Super patient
Always encouraging, never makes you feel dumb
Extremely knowledgeable
Versatile in styles
Has a keen eye to perfect the fine details of your dancing (i.e.; footwork, posture, shoulders)
Renowned throughout the world as a top teacher in the industry
Overall the nicest person you could ever meet
Additionally, his lovely wife is super talented as well in dance and marketing/​organizing some of the most popular events in town.
I’d give 2Ply Swing 10 stars if I could… They are THAT good.

I began swing dancing about 4 years ago at SONH (Swing Out New Hampshire) and Joel taught me my first choreographed dance routine. A Blue’s Brother song and we had a blast. We were a bunch of beginner but Joel gave us a big dose of encouragement and we learned the routine together with his great skill and patiences. I will be forever grateful for your teaching and introduction to Swing Dancing. I whole heartily recommend Joel to anyone wishing to learn, grown and have fun!

I began swing dancing many years ago but decided I wanted to take my dancing to the next level a couple of months ago. I booked a package of 5 private lessons with Joel and started attending the Hang Ten Hoppers Performance classes. He’s a great teacher, super nice, and obviously very passionate about dancing. He holds the private lessons in his garage (which is equiped with a dance floor) which I personally think is a great idea as it keeps his prices reasonable. I’ve enjoyed the private lessons so much that I am now onto my third set of 5 private lessons! The Hang Ten Hoppers group is also super fun. The routines are more advanced than what I’ve been doing, and they are definitely a challenge. The classes move fast, but if you’re looking to advance your swing dancing, it’s a great way to be involved with others who are of the same mindset.

Joel is a fantastic swing dancing teacher. He knows a lot about the history of the dances from pre-​swing era onwards and best of all he loves to share his knowledge and his passion for dancing. From him I have learnt Lindy hop, Balboa, Collegiate shag and a bunch of the classics routines from old clips. I had loads of teachers in my long academic history and Joel is one of the best. He challenges you and helps you taking care of your ego while improving your dancing skills. He teaches fantastic combination while paying attention to the technique behind your moves and your basic steps. Jackie complements Joel perfectly, adding grace and swivels (although Joel’s swivels are not bad at all too ;)). Take classes with them and you will be a happy dancer.

I highly recommend taking classes with Joel. His many years of experience teaching swing dance really show, not only in his excellent dancing but also in his teaching, which is clear and polished. I also recommend his Sunday night Hep Spot dances, held at the beautiful and quirky Tango Del Rey, and featuring great music by DJ Jackie.

Joel & Jackie are amazing dance instructors and DJ’s — technique, moves, styling … just brilliant. If you’re interested in Lindy Hop or Balboa and you are in the San Diego area — definitely hit them up for group classes, private lessons, or any kind of dance coaching you might need!

I had a wonderful experience with Joel and Jackie at the La Jolla Firehouse YMCA classes! Great step-​by-​step for the beginners. Any questions were answered thoroughly, go over the basics as needed. They also encourage you to go out and dance! Can’t wait to take another class from this great couple.

AWESOME!
My husband and I are hooked on Balboa because of Joel!
We learned Lindy Hop about 10 years ago and had a bit of lessons in Balboa elsewhere. When Joel advertised for the Balboa Rendezvous in San Diego we attended the event and came home planning for the next event (Joel was planning). We are not youngsters so learning more and more balboa has been invaluable for us– now we can dance to fast music and last!!! Joel has also helped us hone our Lindy-​Hop swing styling with private lessons.
As for Joel’s teaching techniques they are rated up there with the best professionals. No kidding! He not only is an awesome teacher but also a great person’s person. He cares!
We can’t wait for Balboa Rendezvous and hope we can make it. My husband is fighting stage 4 cancer and on chemotherapy. But we are hoping that they will give him a couple weeks off for the dance. Our dancing has helped him through the past four years (fighting cancer).

Joel is one of my absolute favorite swing teachers. His Lindy classes at Dancetime are great, the Hep Spot sessions are cool, and my wife even got us a private lesson with him on my birthday that was really fun and helped us to hone our technique.
If you’re into swing, especially if you’re interested in getting beyond the basic step into some more advanced dancing, find Joel to help you out! You won’t be disappointed.
