Sky Trail at Point Reyes National Seashore. Update: 1÷28÷07, the trail is clean shaven and somewhat easy to ride. Except for some areas of steep descent with loose grave= don’t wipe out or risk high siding the turn and going over the embankment. The single track areas can be tricky to pedal thru, so deep are they. There is an outhouse bathroom about 1.7 miles into the trail but that’s it. The sky trail is a sweet hike or thrilling mountain bike trail that takes you thru a micro Rain Forest(look for alll the lichen as you stop and gasp for air) and if you are daring, follow it all the way to the ocean. Last spring, this trail had plants 6 feet high and sprawling across the trail. Zero visibility all we knew was our tires were in the single track rut and we were ripping faast thru the plant covered trails. Our eyes would have been bleeding from getting slashed by the plants but we had sunglasses. Some parts of the trail pass thru areas where if you went off the trail, you would go downhill into a ravine or smash your head into a fallen tree; it was Epic. This will take you thru a remote area with no drinking water… nada, nothing, you could get lost or injured, so stay on the trail and be careful. Don’t get stuck out here at night or you will be Sure Outta Luck and spending the night out there. You would not be able to find your way back at night. Plan your total time accordingly. As I was saying… as the trail descends to the ocean, it becomes loose dirt and loose gravel, your tires will be skidding as they lockup as you roll down hill. Coming back may blow out your legs; but it’s going to be more fun. We wimped out and had to walk our bikes up hill a good ways. The beach is very very remote and beautiful. when you get to the beach, turn around and check out the waterfall. Enterprising people might bring some wine, cheese, fresh oysters and a blanket. Distance: 6.9 miles each way. Shaded: 80% Elevation Change: 1300’ Hiking: 10 Difficulty: 7 Steep downhill. When to Go: Excellent anytime, best from March to June. Search the web for more information.
