I recently bought a cello for my daughter. I knew it needed a little TLC. We live in Aurora and I wasn’t finding anyone that could help. Then I heard about Meis Music in Lakewood(MMIR). For many folks the idea of a drive from Aurora to Lakewood is like an outing that requires advance hotel reservations and a full tank of gas. It’s not nearly that bad, but some folks think so. The reality is, I would drive twice as far after the experience I had at Meis Music. It was like walking back in time when my wife and I entered the doors of the repair shop. The sounds of craftsman diligently working on all sorts of band instruments instantly brought me back to my younger playing days. We were pleasantly greeted by, one of the owners, Tessa Meis. She looked at our daughters cello, made note of some necessary adjustments, and offered and incredibly fair price to make it more playable. Knowing we had travel from the Eastern Plains of Aurora, she even dropped what she was doing and offered to adjust it right away. She suggested we go grab a leisurely cup of coffee and when we returned she would have the cello ready to go. I offered to pay in advance, but Tessa instead payment not be made until we were«satisfied with her work.» I take that as a true sign of a confident professional. I was so happy with the entire experience that I almost wish I had more repairs just so I could go back to MMIR. I know that sounds silly. But in a day and age where customer service is practically non-existent and a tip jar sits in front of every worker that barely makes eye contact with you as you hand over your hard earned money, I was so grateful to Tessa and the experience we had with her and her forgiving me for wanting to refer to husband Greg Meis as «Terry.» :-) I’m still not sure how that got stuck in my head.

Friendly as all get out! Greg manages the phone and most of the business, it seems, and he’s patient, thorough, and kind. You can bring in your instrument and have them look it over and give you an estimate on the spot — no strings attached. Plus, they guarantee any of their work so if something didn’t quite go as you’d like, you bring it back, they fix it. No hemming and hawing. They give you priority and attention. I took my clarinet out of storage after 15 years of not playing. Before that I was fairly aggressively classically trained. But now I have the bright idea of learning to play jazz. Hah! This poor, poor little Polish white girl. Hey. I’m trying. Anyway, after a couple lessons my horn started pissing me off. Doing funny things. And I swore it wasn’t my embouchure. I brought it in to Meis. They are swamped over the summers doing band repair for many nearby schools so about a two week turn around time is to be expected. Since they’re used to doing high-volume repairs for young kids, you may find that they might skim over the more subtle kinks in your instrument. The best thing to do is to play it for them and have them hear exactly what is bothering you. Seems like there are at least three guys here — one guy definetely specializes in clarinet repair. Reasonably priced with people who will stand behind their work and give you respect. That’s surprisingly hard to come by these days. Go check ‘em out.

I didn’t get to work with them directly, because my trombone was beyond repair, but they were very nice people. I will definitely be back when I have an instrument worth fixing!
