My husband and I were excited about trying a Different Mexican restaurant in New Mexico, and have had excellent luck using Unilocal in the past. Instead of stopping in Santa Fe, we drove on to Las Vegas to eat. We were very disappointed when the Mexican Kitchen was closed. I’m not sure if it is still open or not. So make sure

Comfortable restaurant but service was a bit overwhelmed. When one dish was served incorrectly, she paused before saying she doesn’t like bothering the cooks when they’re busy. But she took it back and returned with the right dish. Good carnitas and burritos. Would go again the next time we’re in town.

Found this place on Unilocal and I have to say that I think it’s under rated. Although it’s a bit of a dive and the waiter didn’t do a very good job of keeping up with our drink demands, but the food was amazing. The Carne Adovada is exceptional, the service was good (except for the drinks) and the Posole is fantastic. I’ll probably get a large bowl the next time we stop here. My wife got the Chile Rellenos and they were Hatch Green Chilis (the way real Rellenos are made) and the batter was perfect. My son had the kids cheese enchilada and raved about how good it was. The other two kids said that their American food was great. Portions are larger than average and the 5 of us got out of here for less than $ 60 (which is exceptional for us). One thing to note, there are no free chips or hot sauce. Great place. Definitely coming back.

I know this place as Original Johnnie’s Kitchen. It is, hands down, my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of New Mexico. It has the best red sauce I’ve ever had. It also has consistently good breakfasts and lunches. It’s also right off the highway so you can visit on the way to or back from other trips. I’ve had huevos rancheos, burritos, enchiladas with eggs, they have this crazy thing called a chile relieno omelet and tamale and eggs (something for everybody!). My husband likes the biscuits and gravy and the carnitas. Simple dining room with lots of cowboy stuff everywhere. I’ve taken many Mexican-​food-​obsessed friends and family there. It’s always a hit.

Awesome Mexican food. Dirty tacos are delicious! Polite staff, priced just right. Yummy semi-​spicy green chile. Fresh chips and salsa. Canned soft drinks, but iced tea and lemonade with refills. Definitely will stop by again.

We always stop here on way up to Denver for their great breakfast. Today they had huevos rancheros on special in honor of Johnny, who passed away last month. As usual, very good. We ordered a side of bacon that proved to be perfect — thick and just right. It’s a local place worth stopping to enjoy their good food. Good service too!
Stopped again — we go to Denver a lot — and had their huevos, cheese enchiladas, papitas, green chilis, sausage to split — more than enough. My husband, of course, had to have his side of sausage & gravy. Good Tennessee boy! Highly recommend.

The employees were nice but service was kind of slow and the food was all very bland.

Food is ok. Red and green chile was terrible. The restaurant decorations are full of dust. I will not return to this restaurant.

This is the first stop out of Colorado that is south of the chile line of demarcation. Chile to the north of this stop is not worth the effort. This is always a must stop when driving south on I-​25. The staff is friendly and understand when one is suffering from chile withdrawal. Thanks for always being my first food stop in New Mexico. Raton is for the birds…

I ordered Posole and it came with NO MEAT. I have eaten Posole across the country and never had a bowl with no meat. When i asked about it they treated us like we were idiots for asking. Had to order a second entrée. The young female waitress was rude and The rest of the meal was just ok. Soapailla was decent, the ONLY reason i gave them 2 stars. Chips and salsa not part of meal. Had to ask for salsa and was charged $.50 extra. And while checking out. There is a laminated sign at the check out counter that says: sorry, our credit card machine is broken! So cash only! Even though there was credit card stickers all over every window. When i asked how long has the machine been down, the old man says since 1pm this afternoon. Really? And i am sure you went to kinkos and had a laminated sign made in the last 4 hours? Give me a break.

Good food. Terrific red and green chile. Busy at lunch. Service was just OK, probably the only deduction in my rating.

Stopped in for chips and salsa while passing through Las Vegas. They charged us $ 15.00! We got them and headed on to Albuquerque. After we got on the interstate we started eating. The worst chips and salsa we have ever eaten. Chips were old stale round store bought tortilla chips. The salsa tasted like pizza sauce with some spice. Who puts oregano and rosemary in salsa???
We will never stop there again

One of my favorite places on our recent road trip. The sopapillas with honey are perfect. I ordered the tamales and they were delicious. Atmosphere is good waitress was right on time with everything. Will definitely come back here again.

Great breakfast when your moving slow, the morning after a night of great fun. Really good prices.

No joke — this place might be the most memorable part of my recent trip to Santa Fe. I was camping outside of Pecos for 3 nights, and on the early morning drive back to Denver, we were STARVING.
So starving that we officially decided we would take anything. IHOP. McD’s drive thru. Anything that would put food in our stomachs.
Right off the highway, we saw this place with a big sign out front that said «breakfast burritos», and we were sold. Honestly, it was some of the best Mexican breakfast food I have ever had. I had huevos rancheros and my friend had breakfast tacos, and everything was incredible. Like can’t stop talking about it incredible.
The service was speedy, the inside was nothing special, but damn the food was good. Cash only. Since I got back I’ve been trying to decide exactly how ridiculous it would be for me to drive from Denver to New Mexico for breakfast some morning…

Post-​supper, we stagger up to the register with our check. We’re in a deep green chili-​and-​papitas-​induced haze. The young waitress runs our card and advises us to return in the morning for breakfast: get the oatmeal pancakes, she says, my dad’s cooking.
The next day, the oatmeal pancakes pair off with migas and our palates are once again blitzed. Is this stuff even legal?
Point: this is the destination for your serious dose of local, family-​fixed, northern New Mexican fare with a buzz. Pay a little, eat a lot, fix your gastric aura.

This is a cool, little family run New Mexican joint right off the freeway in Las Vegas. We were stopping for gas on our way up from Santa Fe to Denver, so we decided we needed a bit more Northern New Mexican cuisine before we reached the land of, «where the hell do you buy blue corn meal and/​or flour around these parts in Denver?»
We walked in to find a good number of people dining there with plenty more to come as we ate. I got a chile relleno with green chile, posole and beans for a whopping $ 7 or $ 8. The little lady got a ground beef burrito with red chile for another $ 5 or so. The relleno was quite tasty, the green chile wasn’t very hot but had nice flavor, the posole nicely done, and the beans… well, let’s be honest. I ate too much damn food that weekend and I hardly touched them. They were cooked properly ok?
There are all kinds of signed pictures adorning the joint and neat, older Western antiques decorating the place. I heard someone say grandma, and then saw a little, older woman walking back and forth in the kitchen area. You know you’re getting good ethnic food when there’s a grandma involved. In fact, you know you’re getting good food period when there’s a grandma involved.
Overall, I’d definitely stop in here again for a good, Northern New Mexican meal cooked by uma abuelita.

Raton used to be a halfway spot for us when driving between Carlsbad, NM and Denver, CO. After lunch at «The Kitchen» in Las Vegas, we will be making this our new halfway stop. They serve northern New Mexican cuisine. I had a tostada and the husband had a combination platter; both were served quickly. Both were good.
Décor is cute and clean. The Kitchen is easy for parking and getting on and off the highway. A nice place to relax while on a road trip.
