The service was HORRIBLE, the chips stale, I dont know what they thought the tamale was but it was dry spongey corn bread around dry pork. Never again

Good food but a difficult atmosphere makes this review a hard call. The room is cramped, nearly windowless, and silent. No music to fill in the gaps, and I found myself wishing there was a tv, though I normally see a tv as an unwelcome guest at my dinner. Add this to an untrained staff(because it is a family business, and I’m pretty sure that all of the workers are related) and a lack of free drink refills and it is easy to see where complaints can be made. The food is simple, but generally good. Three types of freshly steamed tamales, including a vegetarian option, tacos, burritos, and stews show that this is more traditional Mexican than Tex-Mex in style. The addition of Carne Asada fries shows that they have an understanding of the local food audience. My perpetually difficult to please boy gave his street tacos a thumbs up, and said that every bite was good. This alone made me consider bumping this review up to four stars, but in the end I had to leave it at three, because it is not a place he will truly ask to revisit. Chips and salsa appeared at the beginning of the meal, and were largely ignored. The chips were burned and bland, and the salsa was tasty, but a bit too thinned out. We much preferred the green salsa to the red, as the spice levels were just perfect. Combined they made an excellent sauce for my tamale. In the end, Nana’s kitchen was a fine place to spend Cinco de Mayo this year. We met up with other food loving people and did not have to spend our evening dodging heavy drinkers. The lack of a liquor license helped! Instead we sat and ate and compared notes and photos of favorite foods. My kind of meeting! Give Nana’s a try on a day when you have the time to relax with friends, or consider ordering the food to go. The only atmosphere you will have is the atmosphere you bring, so bring the fun!

I loved the tamales. They are huge and really tasty. I will be back for more. :) But please do something about the nacho chips you serve as an appetizer! They were horrible and stale, but they do add to the all-important first impression.
