Since I’ve railed big-time on the local Kwik Shop in Lawrence I thought it fitting that I point out that the corporation can indeed run a gas service area that 1) has soapy water for washing windshields, 2) is properly stocked with paper towels and they haven’t been jammed in so tight that you can’t get them out, 3) the squeegees aren’t in tatters or ripped apart – actually work, and 4) a generally clean lot. Well, of course. It’s Johnson County. Something of the like of the store on Mass Street in Lawrence would be out of business here. People would never put up with it because there’s competition. I rest my case. The Kwik Shop in Lawrence on Mass. Street is just run by crap owners. This is my go-to stop for gas on the way out of Kansas City and a plus is they take a Dillon’s card. Stopped in today and got 80 cents a gallon off on an empty car which saved over $ 10 on a fill-up. Yet another reason to never stop at the store on Mass. Street.

This Kwik Shop is located approximately 500 feet from the terminus of the Woodland westbound exit ramp from K-10, take Woodland northbound and hang a right and, boom, you’re there! The façade of this Kwik Shop is limestone with gentle echoes of the Prairie School architectural styling originated by Frank Lloyd Wright et al(aka«the Chicago Group»), however the juxtaposed plate glass windows and somewhat generic prefab metal shelving units bearing hydrogenated death snacks, acetaminophen and Funyuns betray the anti-modernist /mass consumerist roots of the artists and visionaries the façade evokes. If you overlook the contrived façade, inside you will find friendly, cooperative and generally competent workers who produce coffee in a generally fresh timeframe. Additionally, these people create biscuit and croissant sandwiches on site, which enables enjoyment of freshness and food-truthiness not often found in convenience stores outside of QT. I always stop here when I can, and I’m never disappointed. Just the other day, in fact, I obtained 3.2% ABV Coors Lite Cans(18 pack) at 6:45AM, enabling me to start drinking at 6:46: success! Stop here and you will not be disappointed: you will probably have an experience that will rival your wildest dreams. At the very least, there’s fresh coffee.
