DDA is a very good school, but it also a close family of diverse and exciting people. It is an amazing thing to see and to be part of something succeeding and growing like DDA is. My kids began studying Kajukenbo(the martial art taught at DDA) with Jose in 2014, and we quickly saw growth in their grit(character and confidence), their ability to control their own bodies and their self discipline. Now two years later, Kajukenbo and their friends at DDA are still a big part of their lives. It is an awesome thing to see your kids working hard to LEARN a skill and EARN a milestone(belt). After watching my kid’s Kajukenbo training for several months and getting to know Jose and his wife, my wife and I decided that we would become students as well. As an adult, I can honestly say that I have benefited from studying Kajukenbo with Jose at DDA just as much as my kids have. Any adult who is looking for authentic martial arts training should meet Sifu Vargas, and find out what Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu is about. The Kajukenbo style was developed in Hawaii, and the Hawaiian concept of family — «Ohana» — is a big part of Kajukenbo. DDA is a vibrant and growing part of the worldwide Kajukenbo Ohana, here in Denton County Texas.

Great family place where everyone can learn or perfect their martial arts skills. This is a practical self defense system, not a method where you never actually make contact and the training is mostly for competitions. My whole family goes twice a week, including my husband, who has had previous law enforcement hand-to-hand combat training, me, who has never had any self –defense training, and our three kids, ages 7 – 9, with different learning styles. Sifu Vargas sets the bar high but has a very encouraging teaching style. Students must earn even the white belt. Students and their families become part of a tight-knit dojo family(or «ohana»). This is a Christian dojo that does not teach Eastern mysticism so frequently found in martial arts classes. Emphasis is on spirit, mind, body, in that order. Sifu Jose Vargas holds a third degree black belt in kajukembo. He has received black belts from senior grand master Cherry Ortega in Puerto Rico, and senior grand master Michael Park in Plano, TX. If you are looking for a self defense class that honors God and is a tight group, this is worth checking out. Prices are very reasonable.
