Three stars for Toys R Us because it is what it is: a place for a kid to be a kid. That applies to big kids like me, too, I guess. Luckily, the youngsters in my life have all grown up and that means I don’t have to shop here on the regular for them. However, since I’m a big kid it’s nice to go in on occasion to look at the board games, video games, and even some of the toys since I have a few friends that collect them and might appreciate one or two as a birthday or holiday gift. Growing up, this was THE hot spot destination for a kid. I’d make a list of everything I wanted for Christmas and sure enough, you could find about 90% at a Toys R Us store. Perhaps I’ve changed, but it doesn’t feel as magical to me anymore. You have to fight Nicholasville Rd traffic to get into the Southpark shopping center, and if it’s a holiday you have to fight to find a parking space — but that’s all adult stuff. This store is pretty clean when I visit. To the back of the store you’ll find a nice selection of video games for every current system out there. On the right side, you’ll have a slew of toys and childhood goodies to get lost in. And somewhere around the middle of the store you’ll find the board and card games. All in all, I think people forget about Toys R Us sometimes, and that plays to my advantage when I’m looking for a new video game or Amiibo figure for my Wii and they’re selling out elsewhere around town. Is this my first stop, no, but it’s on my list still.

They seem to be fairly well-stocked with most items and the location is fairly convenient. However, they seem to always be short-staffed(especially in the check-out area), and the last two times I’ve been here, the front half of the store smells VERY strongly of cigarette smoke. I only come here as a last resort.

I’ve been here countless times throughout the years, I figure I should review the place. I wish that I could say that a local toy shop shut this place down, but the truth is that this place was probably a the reason for at least one local toy stores to be shutdown. Even though I only have one child and she’s now grown, the only times that I can say that I patronized this place were when we received a gift card, or if I was looking for gift ideas for birthdays or baby showers. Yes, they have a ton to choose from! Are there as many kids in Lexington as they carry toys for? I think not. That being said, no wonder why they’re closing.

Kids… parents… kids… and more kids… It’s a busy place with a ton of, well Toys! Their prices are a bit higher than what I can find online, but when I need something quickly and cannot wait for shipping I head here. Staff is friendly and will help you navigate the trenches. I recommend looking online before heading in because if you’re wandering around searching for that special gift without any clue what you’re going to buy, you’re gonna have a bad time.
