What a wonderful place! Beautiful inside and out! Never stayed at a B&B before. I gotta say, it was better than we thought. Check in was a breeze. The lady was super nice. The room was great! Loved the fireplace too! Continental breakfast was perfect! Would definitely recommend! So cozy!

The beds squeak. The carpets have stains. It is mediocre at best and absolutely not worth the cost.

I have to say great little inn. I enjoyed my stay. My wife and I had a wonderful time. The room was great. The location is unique and rustic and very romantic. I would recommend the stay. It had all the charm of a small Inn and bed and breakfast. great place.

I can only speak for the rooms in the main building. Room #18 …It was large, comfortable and clean. Great queen sized canopy bed, small fridge, seating area, access to balcony with seating. Perfect for a weekend getaway. Love how the inn is nestled in a wooded area. Didn’t get to check out the mockingbird kitchen n bar because of a private function but most definitely will revisit.

Honestly, we were really disappointed with our overall stay. The rooms are a bit on the shabby side for the price. We stayed in the historic building over the restaurant. Our television had a horrible buzzing noise, the bed was very high off the ground and set in a very noisy frame. Sunday morning our phone rang around 9am twice, just one ring. Was that an unrequested wake-up call from the front desk? Or maybe it was a warning, when some guy knocked once and let himself into our room at 10:15am? Check out was not until 11am. Thankfully we had the door bolted, but what on earth were they thinking. Then, when my husband went to check out there was no one to be found at the front desk. After waiting for five minutes he just left the keys. I don’t think we’ll be returning anytime soon.

We were a little wary of staying at the Tollgate Hill Inn. Most of the inns in and around Litchfield were booked full over the weekend and this place was the only one with a vacancy. Not a good sign, right? Wrong. This is one of those diamonds in the ruff that haven’t been over-publicized in guide books and local directories, leaving it secluded and peaceful in the middle of a tourist hotspot. We stayed on the second floor of the little schoolhouse annex next to the main building. The room was a little dated in its décor but it had all the amenities we have come to expect from hotel: DVD player, television, toiletries, hair dryer, and even a pull out bed if you have more than two guests in the room. And even though the schoolhouse has a rustic feel, there is air conditioning and a heater in case the mercury drops too low or climbs too high. The shag carpeting is nostalgic and retro. Best of all: the windows are encased in the eaves of the building and are perfect places to lay back and read a book. Here’s a short summary of the highlights and lowlights of staying at the Tollgate Hill Inn: Pros: * A variety of rooms for a range of prices. Litchfield Hills inns can be pretty pricey so it was nice to come across an inn with a variety of rooms at a variety of prices. We stayed in a room for $ 130 but there was also a $ 170 and $ 190 option in the main building. * Full service restaurant on site. * Friendly staff with great suggestions on dining and activities. * Quiet, peaceful location. Hammocks on the property(which are shaded and the perfect place to read a novel on a lazy Saturday afternoon). Cons: * Location is a bit out of the way in Litchfield but close enough to highways for those who are just spending the weekend. * Décor is a bit dated. Think: 1980’s finished basement. * Woodsy location = lots of mosquitoes. Bring the OFF! or a similar, strong bug spray.

Food was excellent as was the table service. Cheery wait staff. In lieu of several items on the menu not being available, the chef sent out a large complimentary appetizer of fresh oysters to our table of seven and a round of complimentary desserts after our main course!

Fine cuisine with a new flare of modern rustic! Chef Samantha Tilley prepared every plate from apps to entrée with a true palate of the most incredible tastes infusing local farms. The inviting atmosphere of the rustic inn and truly knowledgeable staff was enjoyed by out of town inn guests and locals alike. A must try!

I’ve never stayed at the Inn, but the restaurant is fantastic. Great ambiance, and great food. The character of the Tollgate is very comfortable — modern, yet a step back in time in a lot of ways. Staff is very friendly, and we’ve never had a bad night out here. Expensive, but highly recommended. I wonder if it would be better for Unilocal to separate inn & restaurant reviews for these kinds of double establishments. The previous reviewer sounds like he had a truly disappointing inn experience, but that review shouldn’t affect the restaurant’s rating.
