You still call Commonwealth Day Empire Day. You’ve named your pet Churchill. Zimbabwe? You mean Rhodesia. On November 5, you are burning effigies of Guy Fawkes. And on Sunday, you need your roast and yorkshire pudding fix, tout suite.(A French expression? Who won the battle of agincourt?) OK, even if you aren’t anywhere near an Anglophile, you should visit the Brass Rail for their Sunday roast. Be sure to arrive after 3pm, closer to 4pm to experience this Sunday tradition. For only $ 25 you’ll get two healthy slabs of roast beef, the delight that is yorkshire pudding, some mashed potatoes and something green(I believe it’s called ‘v-e-g-e-t-a-b-le’) for garnish or healthier eating. When we arrived on a Sunday and were told the yorkshire puddings may not be ready, there was a moment of hesitation to either stay or go. We pressed our luck, remained and were pleasantly surprised by their presence on the plate. Each bite of the roast beef was better than the last. In a world where food fads come and go, it’s comforting to see something as staid and traditional as a Sunday roast on the menu somewhere, offered up non-ironically and treated with the respect it deserves. If you happen to visit the Brass Rail on a day other than Sunday or don’t care for roast beef, there are other options. I can vouch for the tastiness of the french dip sandwich.(Yes, I know, this does not stray too far from the roast beef world). Sliced sirloin and shallots on a baguette, with beef broth for dipping, this sandwich also comes with a virtual bird’s nest of fries. Be warned that brunch is only available on Sundays, otherwise you’ll find yourself ordering a french dip sandwich like I did one Saturday.(No regrets, of course) If after your main course you still desire more, be sure to check out dessert. One of my favorites at the Brass Rail is their marble pound cake with caramel ice cream. And for those curious about the name Brass Rail, there’s a story behind it. The bar dates back to the 1880s where it lived in Manhattan at a restaurant called the Brass Rail. After a stint in NYC the bar migrated to Elizabeth NJ and finally in the late 70’s to Locust Valley and the present location. So before ordering your next drink, remember the history of this bar, its origins and many patrons past.

It was about 7:30 on a Monday night so I had no problem getting two seats at the bar. Although I have to say for a local restaurant on a Monday night they had plenty of people coming in and out. The host was very nice telling me I could sit wherever I wanted but chose the bar so my boyfriend and I could watch the game. They only have one tv so if you are looking to watch something in particular you may have a small issue. That being said the bartender was very accommodating and happily switched the channel. She was also very cheery and personable which I appreciated. We started with the rock shrimp, which let me tell is a huge portion. Between the two of us we could barely finish it especially knowing we had two big burgers coming. They were fresh and not over fried with the perfect amount of sauce. I highly recommend them! Just writing about them makes me hungry. I then had the sirloin burger which was also humongous! It was so good I asked for medium rare and that is exactly what I got. It came with shoestring fries which were amazing and my boyfriends came with sweet potato fries which were also to die for! Great portions, great food and great staff!

This place has a very nice ambiance. The food is great and there are a lot of small plates to choose from. Make a reservation ahead of time because it does get crowded. Make sure your not seated near the door. It can get very cold Overall I’ve always been pleased with the food and service

Ate here for the first time and will definitely return. Everything from appetizers to dessert was outstanding and our entire group agreed. Our waiter, Eric, was 100% on target with his recommendations. Octopus appetizer, duck, halibut, and Mahi main courses were all terrific. Service was also great. I’m glad we took he drive out to Locust Valley.

Sat right away and service was prompt and not pushy. We ordered the special striped bass and it was phenomenal! Also ordered the tuna tataki and loved it — spicy and delicious !!

We have eaten here many times, each time is entirely different! The majority of times we are faced with a hostess that wont let us sit down without a reservation, no matter what time or day it is and even if the place is empty and we promise to finish eating in 30 minutes! This is too bad, because when the hostess is being cooperative, we get to sit down and there is never an issue. One time I had fabulous cosmo, next time a drink that was 90% vodka and a splash of cranberry juice. When I asked for some lime(or anything) to make it taste better, I got just that. No apology, no offer for a new drink, nothing. The food has always been good here, except the one thing I came to try-the burger-I read it was the best on Long Island. I had one on a Sunday afternoon. Ordered medium, got well done, dry and by the time the waiter made eye contact with us I was half finished. Never get it again– go to BUCKRAMSTABLES right down the block for best burger!

This was a 5 on food and a 3 on service. The service was just OK. A few lapses nothing too serious but just not excellent. The food on the other hand was top notch. Duck and Oyster sliders, were perfect, the calamari was so tasty and tender that no dipping sauce was called for. An orange taste with a hot pepper kick. Everyone at the table was more than pleased with the food. Just felt that the service has to improve to get a top rating.

I really wanted to like this place. You can only eat at so many chain restaurants on LI before you’re craving an original, small business to support. Made a reservation for Saturday at 7PM. Walked in 10 minutes early and we were out in under an hour so this place has QUICK service. Which was great. My real issue was with the food and drinks. I ordered a“Salted Hendricks,” a cocktail made of gin, St. Germaine and grapefruit juice with a salted rim. A take off of the salty dog cocktail that is such a rare find I HAD to try it. Sadly I couldn’t even take more than three sips. It was SO strong it tasted like any drink I would’ve poured for myself when I was in college trying to get as drunk as possible in a short period of time. Not exactly what I am looking for when trying to have a chill meal. They were really nice about it though and offered me another drink, but I decided to skip it all together and opt for a diet coke. As for the food, my sister and I split a fantastic cheese plate but that’s where it ended for me. She loved her French dip and truffle Parmesan potatoes, but I was left feeling very lukewarm about my wedge salad and crab cake. The wedge salad was okay if not a little heavy on the blue cheese. The crab cake itself was good, but surrounded by dissonant Asian flavors and sitting on a bed of Asian slaw and soggy lettuce. Not very appetizing. Basically everything was just okay. From the rave reviews I’d heard from friends, I was expecting to be blown away. I think my hopes may have been too high, so I’ll have to keep searching for good local restaurants.

Everything was amazing. Every single plate I ordered was delicious. My server Will was so helpful, genuine and made us feel right at home. Couldn’t be more pleased. Food came out quickly, my drink was perfect. It couldn’t have been a better lunch. The artichokes, lamb chops, shrimp tacos, Everything exceeded my expectations! I can’t wait to go back!

Came here for Sunday brunch last week and I was sooo happy! The bartender was super friendly and made the best mimosa! She also made some great recommendations. I had the Italian omelet with bacon and sausage and a side of Mac and cheese(I had a rough night LOL) The omelet was perfect with egg whites, broccoli rabe, fontina cheese, sausage and bacon cut up inside(they’re very accommodating). I cut up the perfectly crisp bacon and put it in the Mac and cheese(best hangover cure). Service was great, food was great, and the atmosphere is tasteful and warm. All in all a great brunch spot!

Absolutely the best place around! The duck sliders are to die for. The small plate lamb chops WU style and spicy octopus, simply murderous! Try the chateaubriand and wild game. 5 stars all around! PS the bar fixture left the former building– spot now occupied by the Chrysler building in 1880. Absolutely gorgeous bar vetted in a web of wrought iron and mirrors from the dawn of the Industrial Age. You might even see the offspring of Charles Pratt, Woolworths, Rockefellers and Morgans roaming around.

A good meal located in a great little quiet town. This place gets packed so went there early around 5. Had the lobster bisque soup which was full of favor and lots of lobster in it. They where out of chianti but offered me this nice glass of Merlot instead. It was eh okay. We also had the mussels in red spicy tomato sauce which was excellent but not too spicy. It hit the spot on a cold winter night. Since the lobster bisque and mussels where so good and a large portion. I decided to go light for the main course I had the lobster mac and cheese. It was excellent a real specialty. My wife had a burger which had this wonderful sauce on the side. Took the inlaws with us. Her old man had the linguine and clams which he loved. The evil mother in law had the organic chicken with risotto which she enjoyed as well. For dessert they make an in house gelato so we had two scoops of the chocolate peanut butter with an expresso. My two year old daughter enjoyed that but she also liked the burger and fries my wife had. Overall great place. Started to get packed when we where finishing up line forming at the door. I like to enjoy a nice meal with a quiet atmosphere. Go early and enjoy the place for all its glory.

Haven’t been to Brass Rail in over a year. Was hoping the menu had changed. Surprised to see it had not! Ordered the wedged salad & was not happy with the Russian dressing on it instead of blue cheese. The lobster linguine was good. Lobster was fresh & not chewy. Our waitress was great. I think this is really more of a lunch/bar food restaurant.

Well I am not really sure what I was expecting when I got here because I only looked at the website shortly before heading out, but what I found was only alright. The bf was obsessing over this place about being the best burger place and he had to had to go so I finally caved, but when we arrived to my surprise it only had like two types of burgers. Meanwhile the one that I got was very tasty and cooked perfectly, however the«fries» that come with it are more like oil pieces of crispy string, zero potato in sight, I added it on top of the burger for a tasty crunch but the rest of them just kind of sat on my plate. When we first got there the guy behind the counter clearly was not the bartender so I opted for wine, I ordered the one on the menu in front of me then he asked if I wanted to upgrade to a high end wine, no I want the one by the glass the one you are offering is by the bottle… after that I got a martini which was delicious and artfully crafted by the actual bartender. Not very busy but the phone was ringing off the hook so I imagine it would be for dinner. Muscles were only OK — we asked for very spicy eh it had a kick but unfortunately I hit a few that were fishy which is a HUGE turnoff for me. Would probably go back but I am not sure it is worth the drive, maybe if I am in the area for other events or feel like escaping, the town was cute.

Came here on a snowy Sunday Funday and sat at the bar with my woman. Mussels were good and I enjoyed the sauce. It was a somewhat spicy tomato sauce. Got the jalapeño cheddar burger cooked Medium Rare. It was delicious. nice and spicy, cooked perfectly. Very good burger. The only thing i would change is the fries. The fries they give you are so thin, they are hard to eat and it feels like you are eating pure oil cause there is no potato to them. You can order different fries but it would have been helpful to know that before we ordered. I ended up putting a handful on my burger and then dumping BBQ sauce on the fries and scooping them up on my fork, not piercing them cause they are so thin you get nothing doing that(Perhaps a spoon would have been better). Not that i’m in the area often, but if I am, I would go back.

First of all, Locust Valley is an adorable little town and I’m happy I found a reason to return. Brass Rail is considered a gastro pub, but don’t assume that all they have is burgers and fries. They have a pretty vast menu with items ranging from sandwiches to steak. Something to satisfy any taste. We started with the caesar salad. It was not your typical ceasar salad. The romaine lettuce was uncut and wrapped in proscuitto and topped with baked parmesan. SOGOOD. We also had the rock shrimp which had just enough kick and was served with a delicious aioli. For my entrée, I had the Linguine and Clam Sauce with little necks, mussels, baby spinach, and plum tomato. The pasta was tender and the restaurant did not skimp out on the seafood. The sauce was a creamy compliment to the seafood. For dessert, we shared the key lime pie and the chocolate decadence cake. The key lime pie was good, but the chocolate decadence cake was AMAZING. Layers upon layers of fudgey cake. The perfect consistency.
