Good food but the service was lacking. Not sure if they were short staffed but our server was not friendly at all, never did see him smile. Ordered the chicken fajita quesadilla, very good and a large portion.

Pretty good food but zero personality from the waiter. Go in there once and awhile and always feel like I am putting him out .He was very rude on my sons birthday because we had a large party .Sad because I love the food.

Atmosphere is authentic Mexican with colorful décor grande sized beverages but the food is Americanized with watered down salsa, minimal veggies, too much cheese and too much sauce on most dishes. It’s one of the only Mexican restaurants for about ten miles and was a full house even on a Sunday night with tourists from nearby communities. Bathrooms not clean.

Poor service took forever to get chips and salsa and drinks and food. The food was decent not expensive. But only complaint was the slow service. Oh and the pico de gallo was a bowl of onions with very little tomatoes. Would not be going back.

I had a cheese and onion enchilada and pork tamale. I didn’t expect the food to be good but was pleasantly surprised. It was really good. The skinny margarita was amazingly strong, made by my waitress… there’s no bartender. I can usually drink two restaurant margaritas but decided against a second one here. We were riding bikes through this town and thought we’d just stop in for a drink and some chips and salsa. We decided to have an early dinner after seeing the huge mouthwatering selection of food. This is a no frills restaurant but well worth making a stop in for dinner.

The outside of this little restaurant is deceiving and we found it to have great atmosphere on the inside. Bright and cheery traditional Mexican décor and it seemed pretty clean for an older establishment. The food is your typical American Mexican fare and the prices seemed reasonable. Very attentive service and our food came very quickly despite it being quite busy. We ended up eating here twice during our 3 day stay!

The food was bland and our male server was not attentive at all with the personality of a brick. Next time I will go to one of the tasty mexican restaurants in Astoria.

All the reviews said it was just«OK», so I went there with low expectations because it was close to my hotel. The flavor of their food was indeed«OK», but waaaay overpriced. I had their signature dish, the«El Compadre Special» for $ 18.95. It was pictured on the menu with several cuts of carne asada, but when it came, it had a single very thin slice of carne asada barely larger than a playing card. It was about two ounces of meat. 2 ounces of carne asada for $ 19! I didn’t know whether to laugh or walk out. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she seemed apologetic, but said that’s how it was served and that if we called the manager, all he would do would be pick up my fork and knife and cut it into 3 pieces in front of me. Sounds like a great guy. It was very dry and did not taste like it had been marinated in lime. The rest of the plate was filled with refried beans, rice, and a bland chile relleno. No Guacamole or anything else. All very bland and shockingly overpriced. I wouldn’t have paid more than $ 6.95 for it. All their salsa sucked, and they didn’t have anything spicy. The waitress was nice but the host was rude and aloof. For instance, he would not respond in any way when thanked for something. The other waitress gave us incorrect information about the dishes that the other waitress had to correct later when we mentioned the discrepancies. In all, a very disfunctional restaurant and not worth the price.

My boyfriend and I ate dinner at El Compadre last night. The food was fine, standard Americanized Mexican food, which is what we were expecting, whatever. Our service was great, our waitress was very helpful and sweet. Ummm… Fast forward to 2am, where my beau and I are forced to make some difficult decisions. We have since been taking turns in the restroom exploding from both ends. Dude. I’m pretty pissed that I blew $ 50 on dinner and have to cut short our weekend at the beach just to get sick. Also, the 2 hour car ride home is gonna be SUPER. Nones-the-cool, dudes.

We’re a frequent visitor to Long Beach; we’d driven by several times, finally decided to give it a try. We were quickly seated at one of the cute, kitschy-décor brightly painted tables, and a bowl of warm tortilla chips and salsa quickly arrived. We just ordered water but noted the margaritas were priced lower than ‘the city’. The salse wasnt much to write about. I ordered the Carne Asada y mas(the mas being chile relleno), wife had the carne asada burrito. Mine came with soft corn tortillas, i sliced up the beef and loaded up the guacamole, etc. on top — I asked the waitress for Tapatio, and perhaps reading my mind she asked if i’d like to try their in-house habanero sauce to which I enthusiastically said yes — she brought a small bowl and let me know that ‘they normally require me to sign a waiver’ with a wink; YUMMY hot delight, highly recommend that sauce. The beef was VERY well done and pretty tough, i almost brought the rating down to 3 stars for that, but the chile relleno was outstanding and I loved the seared jalapeño and everything else(beans and rice). Portion sizes were good, not huge. Wife liked her burrito. Prices was about right compared to ‘the city’. Service was swift, courteous, water glasses kept full, everything appeared clean. I’d recommend this place, and will be back. They appeared to be open fairly late(9pm), which is a good thing to remember in a town that pretty much shutters its doors early.

Friend of our had a taste for Mexican food. So I guess this will do. Had a chimichonga. It was ok. The beans were fantastic. Husband had tostada and there was more than he could eat. Finally found a place that had xx equis ale. Nice. But coming from Brownsville $ 4.25 a beer is just a bit much.

We ate here about a year ago and the food was just okay, but we gave it another try a few days ago. What a drastic change. I had an appetizer plate that came with nachos, a taquita, and a cheese quesadilla. It was fantastic. My husband had the beef burrito and enchilada and said it was very tasty. He is a picky eater and always dread going to a restaurant that might not live up to his standards. I would recommend this place if your looking for good Mexican food.

One of the best nachos I’ve ever had! Service isn’t incredibly fast, but it was very good. The server was very courteous, and helpful. Even my mom loved their taco salad bowl!

It was a definite culture shock skimming the menu and not coming across one vegetarian option. Where am I? — Why does everything have meat in it? I ordered the Fajita Burrito sans meat, cheese, and sour cream. It was delicious: mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, beans, & rice. We got a lot of food for a decent price. The strawberry daiquiri was good, but our server didn’t understand why I didn’t want whipped cream, so we ended up paying for a whole other one(sans whipped cream). Will I return? Ehh, maybe if I find myself in Long Beach again without snacks… I wasn’t too impressed.

Randomly decided to go here because we saw one of the billboards while we were spending the weekend in Long Beach. My husband had carne asada and enjoyed it, though it was nothing special. Just typical carne asada, but could have used some more seasonings. I had the chicken enchilada and liked it. The refried beans could have been better, but I still ate them. We got fried ice cream at the end and it was delicious! The décor inside is really great and the staff was friendly. I would recommend it.

Good food, good service. Close to beach. There is not much to choose from in this area. We hose this based on the Unilocal reviews. It was hot and fresh and very cute décor.

Service was excellent, food left much to be desired. When restaurants advertise«authentic» fare, you are either in for a real treat, or left wondering what on earth they think«authentic» means. Which means«authentic» tells you nothing besides what the owner thinks of himself/herself or what they think will bring in customers. El Compadre is NOT authentic. But it’s edible, and potentially better than the only other Mexican food option in Long Beach. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible. Someone needs to inform them that pico de gallo does not mean«diced red onions with a sprinkling of cilantro and tomatoes».
