Gallery Row and Art Walk are not the same thing. Gallery Row was proposed by local artists and the Gallery Row signs went up in 2003. It started out modestly — there were only 8 galleries back in 2004 when the first Art Walk was held. I’m not sure if Art Walk was part of the Gallery Row proposal or if it was a mere afterthought. Gallery Row pretty much spans north-south along Main and Spring Streets from 2nd Street in the north to 9th Street in the south. I have very mixed feelings about Gallery Row. Long ago you could visit a bunch of galleries during the day, but after Art Walk became very popular the galleries began to focus on Art Walk. Gradually it has become less and less feasible to check several galleries out when you go to DTLA on weekdays and even some weekends since many no longer open during the day and sometimes they have unpredictable hours which do not respect the established hours they post on signs or on their websites. The galleries are far apart and you need to do lots of walking. The quality of the art has gone down too. Some of the top galleries are: The Hive, Morono Kiang and Crewest. These galleries can be visited on days other than ArtWalk days. Many of the other galleries seem to be open during ArtWalk only. To be honest I prefer the Chinatown Art District over Gallery Row. They have better art and there is far less walking involved!
