Norm is the coolest!!! He used to let my old band play at his original gallery space on Sawtelle and was always great to us. His artwork rules and he always picks out the greatest pieces to show in his gallery. Go there!

I went to an opening here last week — the première of «Bay to LA» featuring Ursula X Young and Erik Otto. Norm Maxwell had a piece or two up as well. I loved the space, the DJ, and the crowd, as well as the now-standard pours of Two-Buck Chuck. I dig a chill opening featuring well-curated, well-displayed accessible art, with a street-y edge. That’s what I got. That’s what everyone got, seems to me. The crowd was happy, not dripping with hip, and ready to buy … just a nice scene without being so scene-y.

Geez… the reviews on this gallery all over the place. I’m not sure what Paul’s business about finger-biting means, and I can neither confirm nor deny. However, based on my experiences, he’s very active in the community and opens his studio to musicians, artists, and the like. To Clint S.‘s comment about Norm’s work being«wholesome,» I must disagree; he’s very talented… but never wholesome. Anne Geddes is wholesome. Norman Rockwell is wholesome. Though awesome, Norm Maxwell is not wholesome.

The Norm Maxwell Gallery is wonderful art gallery run by one of the kindest, most socially conscientious people you’ll ever come across — Norm Maxwell. I’ve been there on numerous occasions for openings and charity events and it’s always a great evening of first class art and a wonderful myriad of different people from every walk of life. John Z’s venomous, and may I add racist, rant is in itself«psychotic» and couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’ve been going to Norm Maxwell’s gallery, openings, and special events for a while, even before he moved to his new location near Melrose. He often has new works up on the walls, and if you show up in the afternoon, you may find him working on a new piece or some commercial art. He often has the work of other artists on display in another part of his gallery, and even there he makes sure its all of high quality. Norm Maxwell’s opening show parties are always a blast, and you’ll meet all sorts of eclectic people in there, and if you are artistic yourself or just want to see more artists in action, you should definitely check out the figure model drawing events he sets up – you’ll see people drawing in watercolors, markers, charcoal, and Norm will be right there too, drawing in a different style each time you go. Its definitely worth checking out, and its really close to Canters and a few decent bars, so get some food and drink after you enjoy the art.
