«Jess, honey-baked ham is not on the meal plan. Neither are oatmeal cookies and Mentos.» Yeah, that’s the kind if accountability I needed! I chuckle about it now, but at the time that was the kind of friendly reminder I needed to hear. Seems like these days we all need some sort of ‘pro’ in our lives… professional therapist, professional house cleaner, professional chiropractor, professional match-maker. Well folks, I’ve officially retained the services of my first pro. That’s right, I have my very own professional trainer and certified nutritional coach! *squeal* I couldn’t be more pleased and grateful for Tamara and Summer White at Soma Fitness. I began following their fitness careers in 2010 after watching them place in the top 3 of their classes at a Bikini Competition. Heck, if you saw the asses on these ladies you’d follow them too! Summer continued on to earn her IFBB Pro-Card(uh huh, that’s right — she’s a PRO!) and I was intrigued to learn last year she was taking on clients. I dillied and dallied for a while, working out on my own, making my own diet changes, loosing a pound or two here and there. All the while I kept thinking I should just reach out to her already, but didn’t know if she worked with«normal people». I wasn’t training for a show or skinny-fat like some of her other clients. I was overweight and needed help. Giving her a call to get started was the best decision I made last year! I started training with Summer the first week of December 2013. I guess the holidays wasn’t the best time to do something like this, hence the honey baked ham and oatmeal cookies! But in my efforts to drop inches and tone up before my Trinidad Carnival trip in March, I didn’t have time to waste. We had regularly scheduled check-in calls, I emailed her my photos and measurements weekly, and in return she modified and sent me customized workouts(cardio and strength training) and meal plans. Some weeks were more than others, but every week I made progress. To date, I have lost 11 pounds and a total of 10 inches around my body. I haven’t hit my goal yet, but this amount of progress is really promising for me. Aw heck who am I kidding, I’m super proud of myself!!! :-) My skinny jeans are now super baggy, even my watch and rings and undergarments are loose(never thought the day would come when I’d be glad to have saggy panties!). And my ankles, my ankles don’t look constantly bloated anymore! I’m a believer. There is 100%, absolutely, no way in hell that I could have made this progress in this time-frame without Summer and the support of Soma Fitness. Her concrete knowledge about macro-nutrients and overall nutrition is invaluable. I couldn’t have calculated how many grams of carbs vs. protein I needed to consume daily in order for me to loose the weight. I wouldn’t have known when and which macros or foods to change in my diet each week. Summer helped me learn that it’s not just about Zumba classes and salads and counting calories. It’s about training dirty and eating clean! I eat way more than I was before and her meal plans and recipes are realistic and delish! Try her white bean turkey chili — yum! My go-to easy meal full of protein and low in carbs. This has not been an easy road — 6am workouts, no after-work drinks, investing in the right foods, MAKING time to grocery shop and cook. And I’ll admit I had some cheat meals and lazy nights of missed workouts. But I stayed committed and know my progress would have been much slower if I hadn’t sought the support of a pro. For me, all of it has been worth the investment. Efficient. Effective. Soma Fitness is 5-star worthy.
