LOVE! The Blue crab hand roll and Engawa sushi are SOGOOD… If they haven’t run out of them… Avoid peak hours and you’ll have a great experience! The staff is great.

Always great food, but this place is a little too proud of itself. I’m dining with a pregnant woman who just wanted a side of rice and was told that they can’t do sides of rice. Really? They were also out of oysters, salmon and uni. They have yellowtail sushi but can’t make yellowtail sashimi. They need to step it up here if they want me back.

The hype surrounding Sugarfish is almost as well known as the traffic in LA during rush hour. Much like the traffic here, Sugarfish does live up to the expectations. However, unlike the traffic here, Sugarfish is actually an experience to look forward to when in the city. Make it a point to eat here. You will not be disappointed. I will admit that being the fatass I am, I was skeptical of paying over $ 25.00 for sushi that clearly was NOT all you can eat. Why can’t I have quality AND quantity, dammnit?! I indulge frequently when it comes to overeating but hey, I have learned an important lesson since coming here, Keep an open mind when you decide to eat at this sushi gem. Sugarfish’s focus is not only about serving very high quality seafood, but also making it a point to savor each bite at its freshest state, which is immediately after it is served. This is evident by the simple and unadorned interior, simple menu selection, the quick attention of the servers, efficient delivery of food to each table, and turnaround rate of each plate. For all you first timers, hit it out of the park by ordering the Nozawa Trust Me($ 42) because you’ll be able to experience the unique preparation of sushi, sashimi, and cut rolls, totaling around six courses of perfection. The texture of the fish is straight up BUTTAH and each type of fish is easily distinguishable despite having no other seasoning on it. The detail in the preparation of the food speaks volumes on the quality in selecting the seafood. Many ACYE places will hide that same flavor with mayo sauces, extra«crabmeat» filler, or frying(don’t get me wrong, I will still eat everything!) The servers will advise you on the order to eat your food and when to or not to dip your sushi. Listen to them! Sugarfish is bringing it back to basics here and keeping it simple by shining the spotlight on the fish. Take note, because once you’ve tried this place, you’ll be preaching about the quality of the fish here as their self appointed sushi connoisseur. Prepared to be enlightened.

i like Sugarfish — I usually get the Big Nozawa and a few pieces of sushi that are on my favorite list. I have actually been to a few of them — the one in Hollywood and the one in Beverly Hills. I like eating later but my Sugarfish companion likes to go early so as not to wait. I like the team service — every one brings you a dish and follows up on what you need. They tell you what to sauce or not. The food is always a little different from the last time. Even Toro — usually pricey — has been on one of the menus I love the warm rice. Although, last time the rice was not sticky enough and kept coming apart so I had rice separate from my fish for much of my meal. There is a nice variety of wine by the glass but the one missing thing is hot saki. To me, sushi is just not sushi without hot saki. Anyway, the food is very good. Dinner last time with wine ran over $ 75 and the tips are added in automatically(which when you get stellar service might hurt the staff). i will be back as I have a standing date with a friend who is obsessed with the Trust me.

We had the sampler menu and loved it. It is good if you like sushi — I would prefer not so much rice and next time will order a la carte. But the fish is amazingly fresh and just melts in your mouth. The unfiltered sake is always the way to go. If you sign up and go twice in on year, you get a free dinner on your birthday. yey

Eating here for the first time was a little bit of a culture shock. I never realized that I have actually never really eaten«legit» sushi until coming here. Being a southern bell, I am use to eating not real raw meat, but something that is just deep fried. As Paula Dean would say, «BUTTER!» This place is pretty much high quality raw fish stacked on top of rice. There are some special unique sauces they put on the fish to make it more appealing and delicious. There are some silly rules here. They asked that you don’t use soy sauce on meals with sauces already on them. I would suggest following the rules for the first time. If you don’t like it, pour all that sodium love back on your rice and fish. The rolls are AMAZING. It’s made with fresh seaweed with fresh raw fish wrapped inside. Amazing. If this is your first sushi experience, the texture of the fish might be a new experience or a learn taste, but this is definitely a taste you want to get accustom to. Oh and if you want a big meal and try it all, order the«TRUSTME» TRUSTME. ;)

I mean you can’t really go wrong with sugarfish. The quality of their fish is wonderful, and a little goes a long way. If I’m really hungry, I go with the nozawa trust me plate. If not so much, just go with the trust me. Other than that, I am obsessed with the albacore belly. Which they don’t always have. The cut lobster roll is terrific also. This location has valet parking around the block, or you can find street parking. Make sure to check the signs. Service has always been on point here.

No frills, no fuss, just LEGIT sushi. You won’t find a California roll in this place and that’s probably my favorite part. They focus on what’s important — the fish! I usually go with the medium tasting menu«Trust Me.» It’s only about $ 30 and you will get a ton of amazing food. Best quality sushi in LA, hands down. They don’t take reservations, but there’s a nice little coffee place next door you can wait. They have wine and beer. Always worth the wait!

Be aware !! small dishes ! The sushi was amazing, the best one ever. ever. i just know i will be back. The thing is. every dish was so small, we order and get 1 piece for $ 4-$ 5. it was so annoying cause you want to have more it is so delicious. So far i consider 4 – 5 stars. But the service was bummer. i asked the waitress to give me sauce for the sushi and she refused saying ’ they don’t have that ‘. I could not understand if they want to charge extra or if they simply don’t have sauce///./.?/ Anyway next time i come prepared on half stomach, not on an empty one. this is my tip.

WOWZA. So it was $ 37 for the Chef’s selection. Just enough food for 1 person I think, so we each ordered this selection. It’s the largest sampler, and the waiter classified it for those who were starving. I mean it was definitely the perfect amount of food, not too much or too little. They were likely more full then me as I had tea, and they each had a beer. The quality is PHENOMENAL. Just very fresh flavors, and the sauces paired with the pieces were delicious as well. Rice to fish ratio was perfect as well. I think this is my new favorite sushi spot in LA, and the great news is they have multiple locations! Tip is automatically included so just watch our for that, or you’ll end up over-tipping.

In a relatively unadorned interior the sushi is what really stands out here. The no reservations restaurant has multiple tasting menus with different amounts of pieces as well as a la carte items. I went here before a concert and was able to get a table immediately upon arriving. As I was quite hungry both my girlfriend and I went for the Nozawa menu, which is their largest tasting menu. The meal started with some well-seasoned edamame, and then progressed into a wide variety of nice fish offerings. The first dish, a tuna sashimi with seaweed, soy sauce, and dashi was the best of the night as it was light, flavorful and highlighted the fish in a novel way. They then served a variety of nigiri. Some favorites included the albacore tuna, the snapper, and the diver scallop which was the daily special. The rice was warm and loosely packed and allowed the fish to melt in your mouth. The bottom of the rice pad was lightly dipped in a ginger soy sauce which did not overpower the fish but did add a depth of flavor that lent itself to a light dip in table-side soy sauce to take some of the edge off of the powerful ginger spice. The last of the offerings were a toro and a blue crab hand roll. I’d never had sushi delivered to me in this form. The roll was not sliced and the nori on the outside served as a crispy outer shell to be held with your hands. I liked the blue crab hand roll more as I think the toro got lost in the very strong nori flavor. The service was great and the meal was an excellent value. I left very full and satisfied, and the restaurant removes ambiguity by including gratuity for all parties. Very nice date spot and place to enjoy some fresh fish.

I’m pretty sure I’ve reviewed Sugarfish before, maybe just not this location. But maybe I haven’t and if I haven’t, I have no idea what is wrong with me. I say this because ever since the day I tried it, I’ve been completely obsessed and have brought countless people here to try it for the first time themselves. What was their thought? Well, I didn’t even have to ask because It’s practically written all over their faces during the meal– turns out, they were as fired up about Sugarfish as I was. So like I said, I’ve been completely obsessed. So obsessed that I started eating here once or twice a week and let’s be honest, this place ain’t cheap. Anyway, enough of the rambles– in short, I weened myself off and now only come once a month or so. So what’s great? Everything. The fish, the rice, the seaweed, it’s all unreal. But what’s amazing, you ask? That lobster handroll. YUMMMMmmmmmmmmmm. If you’re moderately hungry, I would suggest the Trust Me and add a lobster roll. If you’re really hungry, get the Nozawa Trust Me and add a lobster roll. No matter what you do, you ALWAYS get a lobster roll. Do ya hear me?! ALWAYS! Whatever Sugarfish does to their lobster, let me tell you, these lobster have died for good reason because they are making LA residents SOOOO happy.

Amazing sushi. This is the best date night spot. Sugarfish is on point with everything. The rice is the perfect temperature & the fish is delicious. Every bite is very simple but full of flavor. I am always incredibly impressed by how quickly I become full. The meals are perfectly proportioned and you can choose the prefix menu that best suits your hunger level. Each plate of food has only a few pieces on it and they time it out so that you are always eating each bite only moments after it has been prepared. Be sure to arrive early and plan to wait for a table. If you are willing to sit at the bar for your meal they can usually squeeze you in a shorter time frame. The waiting area is small with limited seating but they’ll let you get started with a drink while you wait and the atmosphere is very nice.

What’s not to love about Sugarfish? I’ve tried multiple locations and they’ve always satisfied my taste buds. I came here with the BF one night after work since he’s a few blocks away. I’ve always wondered where they get their fish from, it’s always fresh and the quality is outstanding. Maybe they genetically engineer them in the back? Service is always on par. No complaints, ever.

I LOVESUGARFISH! Even though I am quite a foodie, I will have to admit that I don’t go to many sushi joints because I eat a lot and I can’t justify the price for how much food I would actually eat if I actually went to a sushi place. I usually just settle for a good take-out place, never really the fancy, high quality places. I do want to become a better foodie of ALL foods so I am so glad that sugarfish was a great first try at some high quality sushi! My friends and I came here for lunch around 11:30(when it opened on a Monday) and it was empty. I would say within a half an hour, the place was pretty packed. We each got the Trust Me deal. For the price($ 27.00), amount and quality of food, it was a great deal. The sushi rice was impeccable. It was warm and had a bit more vinegar taste to it than I was used to but it was great with the sushi. First came the beautifully salted edamame. I didn’t see a grain of salt meaning it was boiled with salt water. It was super salty in a great way. I could eat a pound of that. Then came the tuna sashimi which was plentiful in tuna. Then came two pieces each of Albacore and Salmon sushi. Beautifully cut. Then came the yellowtail and halibut. The halibut had a lemony rind taste that was very interesting. Last was the toro and blue crab hand rolls. The seaweed wraps were so fragrant. The toro was nice and soft. The blue crab was full of crab flavor. My friend also got a side of uni and for two pieces at $ 11, that is a steal. I tried a bit and it definitely was fresh. Overall, EXCELLENT!

This is the first time I’ve paid more than usual for sushi. I’m used to having good sashimi and fusion sushi in Calgary and Vancouver so this high end sushi was a new experience for me. Came here with my friends for lunch and we each ordered the ‘Trust Me’ which included various sushi, tuna sashimi, and a couple of hand rolls. I shed a tear when the price tag showed ‘$ 25′(damn you Canadian currency!). Also, be prepared to pay an additional 16% automatic service charge. The food was simply amazing! Each slice of fish was so soft that it melted in your mouth. The soy sauce was different as well as I found out later that it was house made. It wasn’t salty. The hand rolls were my favorite. Fresh soft fish, right amount of soft rice, all wrapped by a warm and firm(but not brittle) and flavorful seaweed paper. No soy sauce required. You can tell from each item that this restaurant is very detailed with its food preparation. Each item has to be eaten right away to be fully enjoyed. I’m sure they’d scold at you if you let it sit for 10 minutes because I would! Awesome place for high end sushi and if you’re visiting LA, definitely worth going. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because for $ 25, I expected to be full because I’m more of a street foodie but then again, I eat a lot. For $ 25, you get about 8 pieces of fish with sashimi and edamame, and you sacrifice quantity for quality.

I am currently confused why people are raving about this place. Everyone referred me to try this place when in LA, so I did. If you dine in, you will need your entire party there before they will seat you. Secondly, I feel like this place is a fast scene. You sit, you eat, you head out. So if you are looking for more of a relaxing place to chat for a bit, this place isnt it. It could be because you see everyone coming in and out for take out. I may be wrong. The selection is limited, very simplistic japanese sushi. Nigiri, Sashimi, and simple rolls. The edamame is overly salty and the sushi is okay. I think this place is a hit or miss for people, and for me, it definitely was a miss. The Lite takeout box is $ 17.99 and it comes with a few pieces of some of the main fish people get, 2 — 4 pieces of sushi.

Yay, a sugarFISH opened close to my work! Just a few blocks down so I can mosey here whenever the craving strikes. I always get the Trust Me which comes with edamame, tuna sashimi, 2 pieces each of salmon and albacore sushi, 1 piece each of halibut and yellowtail, 1 toro and 1 blue cab hand roll. My favourites are the salmon and halibut. I also switch out the toro for blue crab because the crab is way better! Service is good, but you’ll pay 16% gratuity regardless. Yep, it’s automatically added to your check. At $ 25 a pop for the Trust Me, it’s definitely not a weekly lunch destination for me. No ballin’ here, but I do enjoy good sushi.
