Best fish in town and a fantastic value. My stanard order is a heavy pound, fries, and slaw. I wish they were open longer, but it’s March — November only.

Cannot be beaten with a stick. Every year, and I’m not exactly sure of the dates, the Suburban Masonic Lodge fries up fish that can be bought by the meal or by the pound. They do it every Saturday. It seems that the aroma floats through the air and attracts people from all around, not too dissimilar to the way Homer Simpson would smell a pie cooking off in the distance, and he follows the scent all the way to the source, only to devour everything he finds. I mean, as far as I’m concerned, the fish from the Suburban lodge is some of the best in the city. Given that its location is so close to Churchill Downs and UofL, I’m surprised more people don’t know about it. But it’s not like they’re hurting on business. If you go, be prepared to wait. The line is long, and they are busy. Oh, and take cash. They are a cash only establishment. Enjoy.

Having spent time in upstate NY, I thought I had a handle on great fish fry.(firehouses and civic clubs do haddock with salt potatoes every Friday throughout Central New York). until wandering into Suburban quite by accident. It’s simply remarkable. Buy fish(and fries) by the pound, or platter meals, and be delighted. The swaths of white fish are en robed by an amazing crust that is primarily corn meal with flecks of pepper and seasoning. Despite the deep frying — ‘Green River style’ — the fish has no trace of greasiness. I’ve never had better fried fish and neither have you. I’m in Louisville for 2 weeks ahead of Kentucky Derby annually and rush to Suburban now every Saturday during that visit and any other weekend I may come to town. I’m amazed that so many locals I bring Suburban up with have never been there. It’s a unique community treasure.

Best fried fish in town, take it to go and enjoy at home. Only open Saturdays from march to november, sold by the pound, gotta get some onions, only take cash. That’s all you need to know, it is THE place for fried fish.

Fried fish exactly the way I like it: crispy-crunchy on the outside, moist & flaky on the inside. Sandwiches are served on delightfully non-fancy sliced bread, and the French fries were just right. Get there early, once the food is gone, it’s gone… we missed out on the slaw & marinated onions, so another visit will be in order to try the sides. They don’t take plastic, but you don’t have to bring a lot of cash: sandwiches, fries & drinks for three came in at under $ 23.

I think Suburban has the best fried fish sandwich in all of Louisville and the prices are reasonable. Only shortcoming is that they are only open on Saturdays.
