How can you close the bathrooms at a gas station? Spent $ 40 in gas but all the the restrooms were closed without any reason or explanation.

I both reside and work in downtown Louisville and when weather permits I try to ride 20 miles a day on my bike for exercise. I put this Thorntons on my «pit stop» list several months ago and have stopped in often since, usually an average of once or twice a day. There are some good things and bad things about this specific Thorntons location. The location has been pretty clean every time I have stopped there and they have a wide selection of convenience goods like beer, hot dogs, donuts, sandwiches and other snacks. Excluding ice cream(more on that to come) the prices are fairly reasonable for a convenience type gas station. 99 cent coffee and soft drinks and tea as of the date of this writing. Now for the bad. This place is often a hang out for homeless people or panhandlers, in part because of so many homeless shelters in the area. The Wayside Christian Mission is right next door, and the Salvation Army and some other church shelters are close also. Plus there is an I-65 bridge 1 block south of this location that often has 10 to 20 homeless people per night sleeping under that bridge. So if you stop at this location be prepared for people to panhandle you for cigarettes or money or both. This Thorntons location has also been an operating base quite often for the famous fake and fraudulent panhandler Gary Thompson many times. Indeed, I saw Gary Thompson panhandling at this Thorntons just yesterday(6÷14÷2014). Please do not be fooled at this location. Finally, if you like ice cream you may want to get your ice cream at a different location. Two problems. First, they do not keep their ice cream vending machine in good working order. It will often be out of either ice cream, flavors or both. They also have a little bait and switch routine they work on their customers. They advertise a large ice cream for $ 2.49. However, if you get a large ice cream cup and put too much in it they want to charge you $ 3.99 instead of $ 2.49. Happened to me at 6:19PM this last Thursday, June 12, 2014. Woman manager or assistant manager complained to me I had put too much ice cream in my large cup and that from now on they would be charging me $ 3.99 instead of the $ 2.49 they advertise. I mention the matter because no warnings are posted on the ice cream machine and nobody seems to know when they will claim you put too much ice cream in your large cup and thus have to pay extra. My solution to the ice cream problems at this Thorntons is that I no longer go there when I want ice cream. I instead go to the Kroger nearby, which offers more ice cream at a lower price($ 2.50 or $ 3 will get you a 1.5 quart container, which is much more probably twice more than anybody could ever get in a large Thornton’s ice cream cup). To get to the Kroger simply exit this Thorntons going south on First Street(it is one way south) to Breckinridge Street. Turn right on Breckinridge and go one block and the Kroger is on your left. Kroger unlike Thorntons uses straight forward pricing and the price advertised is what you will pay at the register there(make sure you have your Kroger card with you to get the best deals). Kroger also has much cheaper beer and snacks. My recommendation if you are in the area of this Thorntons is that you get your gas, coffee and soft drinks or tea here, but your ice cream and all snacks at the nearby Kroger. You can save a ton of money at that Kroger on your snacks and you will not get the kinds of register surprises you get at Thorntons, where something is advertised at one price, but rung up at the register at a higher price.

Great place to stop by for quick gas or snacks! I know others don’t like the location, and yes it is downtown and there are colorful people who hang out around here, but there are almost always police officers hanging out here as well. So everything sort of balances out. This is also one of the few places where you can purchase E-85 fuel in the Louisville area.

Up until a few months ago Thortons on Broadway was rivaled only by 2nd street Kroger for the most ghetto place in Downtown Louisville to grab a snack. However, this winter bulldozers completely knocked down the old Thortons(and Rally’s) and now a brand spanking new Thortons has been resurrected in its place. In addition to row upon row of gas pumps this new Thortons has a soft serve ice cream machine in multiple flavors, a wall of slushy machines, a hot dog bar with a variety of toppings, and every packaged snack option I could ever crave. The parking lot is now very well lit and the store layout is open(aka safe feeling). My only complaint is that the line tends to be extremely long at the checkout counter. I’ll definitely be back though.

I actually very much agree with Valerie P. wow! Not many places can you watch a drug deal(I assume that is what was in the small bag — I guess it could have herbs for the aspiring chef). After that as I was entering someone different asked if they could hook me up with a special«pick me up». While leaving a third asked if I needed«special fuel». And they say the economy is dead in Louisville. Seriously, boys & girls. Be safe here. I’m 6’4 and I’m telling you, be careful here.

G is for ghetto. I know most people think a gas station/convenience store functions as a place to get fuel and get a quick snack/drink. I beg to differ. There is so much more to the Thornton’s on 1st and Broadway in Louisville, KY. First the amazing fashion ideas! Who would have thought that adult sized cookie monster pajama pants and a sport jersey and baseball cap will give a man enough confidence to try to pick up a woman. Secondly, this place is frequented by folks collecting for the charitable organizations(themselves). I was disappointed that I did not have a dollar to contribute for the TARC ride or the beer, but I am sure someone contributed. Lastly, the loitering and the woman(who was being picked up by cookie monster pants) was smoking a small cigar. Not only did one man try«to holla», but two, apparently guys really like females who smoke small cigars while sitting on a dirty curb at Thornton’s. I need to keep this technique in mind, if ever my controlling boyfriend dumps me. I highly recommend this place, but lock your car door and hold on to your purse!
