Bobby Deal, the man behind Front Range, is an unsung hero for a lot of photographers who may not even be able to publicly acknowledge his help. Mainly, the workshops he has done on studio lighting and particularly on clean isolations shot on white background have allowed a lot of photogs to quite literally level up in terms of their technique and be able to do in-camera work that bypasses hours in Photoshop. Bobby is one of those quiet pros who knows what he’s doing, is generous to a fault when it comes to sharing his knowledge and is ridiculously humble to boot. The last workshop he ran that I attended had about 12 photographers running through four fully equipped sets that Bobby and his assistants put together and trying out new techniques on all types of different models(various ages, skin tones, and makeup looks). I particularly remember his patience and how easy he made the stuff look. Bobby’s big philosophy is that you should be able to do a clean isolation that’s not blown out(meaning even the little stray hairs are still intact and not eaten up by the light) so that when it comes time to retouching, you can literally do the job in minutes and not hours. No complicated masking, no weird selections, just mastery of light ratios on the subject and background to make your work easy. And don’t forget about the added bonus of shooting on white – your photographer or your designer can always slip a few extra backgrounds under the subject to make a flawless final look that didn’t require traveling all over town with bags of equipment. I’ve seen Bobby do countless switch-ups with his headshots that all look super natural PRIMARILY because the man knows exactly what he’s doing on white background. The man’s a pro. That’s all there’s to it.
