I’ve been dealing with Josh for years. As a hobbyist furniture builder I’ve bought all sorts of wood from Freestate Timbers all the way back when they were Exotic Lumber. Both Josh and his staff are helpful, and they even spent time talking to my wife when she identified a species as coming from a particular part of another country. I go there for almost all my wood and am going today for some Cherry. They have a very large selection and if you’re into cutoffs they sell them too. They also have some finishes though 99% of their business is lumber and milling.

Update — Milo the dog is no longer employed at Free State. Bummer. The prices here have also gone up quite a bit on many of the exotics and selection in some species has gone down. Still a worthwhile visit, and if you need milling services, it’s hard to beat Freestate.

The prices are astronomical!!! I can’t afford to pay 2 – 3 times the going rate for wood — I just can’t justify it. 12⁄4 hard maple — no figure $ 15/BF — really? Groff and Groff — $ 7/bf, Hearne — $ 9/bf — these are also high priced mills. mutterspaw — $ 6. I had high hopes for Freestate — it is fairly close and it seemed to have a good selection of lumber. Both are true. The people working there are very nice and willing to help. The place is heating and well laid out with a nice selection. the wood seemed to be of very high quality but no better than the others mentioned above. If you are OK paying a premium, you won’t be disappointed. I can’t afford it.

These guys have a truly awesome little shop. Their selection of woods is excellent, and so is their service. If you have only been to places like Home Depot or 84 Lumber, well, this is something completely different. This is quality lumber, not just cheap warped pine. Oh, and as the other reviewer said the dogs in the shop are great fun to play with. Any business owner who takes his dogs to work will get my support.
