Scalawags Whitefish & Chips

Whitefish was really good. Fries were average. Hot dog was gross. My son couldn’t even eat it. But the fish was really good and that’s what we came for.

Excellent dinner stop. You order your own food at counter and it is brought to you. The gents that were in charge of costumer service in the back were AWESOME! They picked up baskets, brought our food with pizazz! Please eat here and give this delicious food a try.

The freshest of fish. Excellant food and environment. First time but not last. Highly recommend.

Ok so I am partial to places where we can take our dog! Outdoor seating on a lovely June evening meant that I could bring my dog and enjoy a fantastic walleye dinner, and my companions enjoyed whitefish and fried shrimp. Great ambiance, great seafood, quick service, and a nice young man who was cleaning the outdoor tables and stopped to ask if we were enjoying our travels. Nice place, recommend stopping for a good taste of Michigan seafood and hospitality!

Great addition to the drag. They use Lake Michigan whitefish and had a casual friendly vibe. I had the two-​piece whitefish with fries. Great lunch option

Excellent fish and chips. The The breading was delicious. The fries were very crispy. They had vinegar for the fish and chips. The person working here was very friendly and helpful. Overall, was a great little restaurant and we will be back in the future.

What a great place! My wife, dog and I ate on their patio. Great service, food and prices!!! We shared the two piece white fish platter, cup of chowder and 2 drinks all under $ 20!!!

Amazing whitefish! Two piece dinner will fill you up. Best kept secret is the chowder. We have gone every year since it opened and it never disappoints!

Went their for dinner yesterday. Ordered Walleye and perch. And everything turned out excellent. The fish was fresh and crispy. And the best thing was they didnt have the specific odour that the seafood usually have. Such amazing food was rightly priced. The girl at the register was so nice and friendly. We were not sure if a basket will be enough for each of us, she told us about the size and quantity. We are surely coming back to this place on our next visit.

The Whitefish Reuben was amazing! The atmosphere inside is very fun to look at enjoy. Outside seating available also. We will be back for sure next time we are up North!

Has not been there in 5 years or so. Prices are higher, but still reasonable. Plenty of good food for not a lot of

Love this place. Went there for dinner just a few hours ago. The waitress/​cashier was super friendly. And when I got the food, so surprised! Fries were fresh and crispy. And fish was super light and fluffy and yummy. My hubby loved his shrimp dish too. We walked out full and delightfully satisfied.

It’s the best. They get their fresh whitefish daily from big stone bay fishery in mackinaw city. Great taste and super tasting tartar sauce. If you want more tartar sauce they won’t charge you like freshwater grill does in petoskey !!!

The white fish is delivered fresh every morning and was super moist. Of course the tartar sauce recipe is a secret and tastes amazing! The fries were awesome and I fell in love with the Cole slaw. Awesome find! Thanks Unilocal!:)

A little too touristy for me. The whitefish is pretty good here, but definitely not the best in the area. I could have definitely skipped the chowder. It was pretty bland and tasteless. The folks working here also could have been friendlier. Yes, it was busy. But at least have a smile on your face for cryin’ out loud!

Decided to give it a try based on the reviews. Both my hubby and I had the whitefish and fries. It also comes with coleslaw and 2 hush puppies. Let’s start with service, if you don’t know when you enter then hopefully you will read a head of time was they do not give you a heads up — you order when you walk in, hopefully you can then find a table, then a server will call your order number and bring your meal to you, our server was very nice.
The important part; our meal, the fish was very bland, I was told white fish is some what bland, won’t eat that again. The fries taste like they were from frozen, don’t know for sure but sure didn’t seem fresh. The coleslaw was good but the hush puppies were so over cooked we couldn’t eat them.
Would we go back? No I don’t think so.

The whitefish was just okay but the real winners were the perch (our tables personal favorite) and the walleye! I have literally never had a better piece of fried fish before! The restaurant is tucked away in a strip mall in down town mackinaw city and the inside is adorably decorated with fishing gadgets and stuffed fish on walls. Best homemade cocktail sauce too
I’d highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in need of a delicious lunch in the city!

Pretty good stop in a little tourist town. Decent fish, quick service. There was a line out the door when we arrived at 3pm, but it moved quickly. The fried fish was good, flakey and light. The whitefish chowder was OK. I found a couple of bones, which was off putting but probably hard to avoid if you have fresh fish.
If we were traveling through, we would probably stop here again. It’s pretty much the only option in this area if you don’t want to live off of fudge or fudge products.

We discovered this restaurant while searching for a place for dinner that would allow our little dog. The place is welcoming and fun. Their ample outside seating is perfect for dining with your pet. The wait staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. I got the chowder … It was a bit bland and short on fish. My wife got the chicken strips and thought they were pretty good. Mixed feelings on this one.
