Was heading to Syracuse from Colgate and had some time to kill, so I figured I’d drive around a bit until I saw something interesting. Didn’t take long. Had some fried clams and ice cream, not exactly the ideal meal before a 12-hour train ride but how can you resist ordering from a stand-alone ice cream shop? Reminded me of a Tastee-Freeze that was a few blocks from my house in Chicago when I was a kid. The line went from 2 to 20 in about 30 seconds, but it moved quickly. The service was friendly, the clams were very good and the ice cream was great. Will have to stop back with my kids the next time I’m in Hamilton.

The burgers were awesome and the sweet potato fries were really awesome. We ordered outside and the line was really long but it became apparent why once we got our food. This place seems to be a local favorite and was fun to eat outside on the picnic tables. Finally, the ice cream was great too. Be prepared to save room for dessert because a «small» ice cream is 3 scoops! I was happy though because I couldn’t decide between Smores, moose tracks or peanut butter pie so I got a scoop of each!

Tons of menu items for both meals and ice cream. Delicious ice cream. Courteous staff. Fries are the best around… really crispy and flavorful. Hamburgers leave a little to be desired. While the flavor of the meat is delicious, the bun is typically on the dry side and is just a store bought sesame bun. There are no veggies included on the burgers. Sure would be great with some fresh tomatoes, onions pickles and lettuce. My favorite ice cream to order is the Professor’s Delight… a carry-over from when this place was known as «Gilligan’s Island». It’s like a hot fudge sundae but with lots of big chunks of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups… not just crumbs like other places give.

Very fine and inexpensive burgers and onion rings, among other typical roadside eatery fare. Serves Gifford’s ice cream in addition to soft-serve. The Troops folks discovered Gifford’s at a national food show and decided they had to have it. Excellent decision! Gifford’s is to the state of Maine what Ben & Jerry’s used to be to Vermont. Outstanding ice cream with the standard and also some unusual but not weird flavors. Best coffee and maple walnut ice creams I have ever tasted. Since I grew up in Maine and used to go to the original Ben & Jerry’s in a converted filling station in Burlington, I can say with some authority that Gifford’s beats Ben & Jerry’s.
