We have eaten here twice. The food is very good. It is no frills and cafeteria style. The décor could use an update and things are pretty run down, so we take our food to go. Whatever, the food is tasty and the prices are very reasonable.

I have been wanting to eat here forever. Just had lunch there and it didn’t disappoint. No frills here folks, just good, basic home cooking. What did I have for lunch? Smothered pork chops, rice and gravy, mac and cheese, cabbage and cornbread. Washed it down with some sweet tea. Go get ya some. You won’t regret it. (they serve breakfast from 7am to 11am — can’t wait to try that)

I have been aching for some soul food and headed to Lowe’s with a few coworkers today and I was seriously impressed! The service was quick and very pleasant; although I went in wanting to try their oxtail, they didn’t have any available, so I opted for the smothered pork chops. These chops(I’m savoring my leftovers as I type this review) are so tender and delicious! They are perfectly seasoned and the gravy over the rice is impecable. The lunch special is served with meat, rice, and side for JUST $ 5! Completely a steal seeing that I’ve made two hearty meals out of it. The macaroni and cheese is amazing and everything is freshly made daily and I hear if you don’t come in at a reasonable time things sell out. The only reason I didn’t give this joint a five-star rating is because they didn’t have any oxtails available and they didn’t have any desserts prepared. I’m sure my next visit though will sway me to five stars!

I recently traveled with my friend Sean over to Eatonville, home of Zora Neale Hurston and writer of Their Eyes were Watching God. Eatonville is the first African American community to be incorporated as a municipality in the United States(founded circa 1887). Today the city of Eatonville is very tiny, surrounded by Maitland and Edgewater and other suburbs on all sides. The main thoroughfare is Kennedy Boulevard, a street with churches, barber shops, a museum dedicated to Zora Neale Hurston, and most notably, Lowe’s Good Eaton Soul Food restaurant. Lowe’s Good Eaton was founded by Shea Lowe, 26 years old, just three years ago. A native of Ocoee, Shea has several relatives from the Eatonville area and decided to open up Lowe’s Good Eaton because of his love for food and also for the love of business and money making with his passion for food. When you enter Lowe’s Good Eaton, you immediately notice that the place could use some TLC, maybe some new paint or new tables and décor. I think it would do well to add something to brighten up the place and freshen it up a bit. In this case though, the old adage holds true that it is quite often the holes in the wall that serve up the best foods. Along their walls they have several awards and recognition, including a check from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority an a certificate for Best Pie 2010 from Orlando Weekly for their Sweet Potato Pie. On this Friday, I ordered their BBQ ribs with two sides($ 11), grilled on site at Good Eaton’s and served only on Fridays and Saturdays. We were lucky to have arrived at just the right time because they ran out of ribs right after we made our order. You order up at the counter where all the side dishes and some of the oxtail, baked chicken, and fried chicken are ready to be scooped up into your plates, kind of like by the lunch lady at the school cafeteria. The side dishes I ordered were the Mac N Cheese and Collard greens as well as a slice of their sweet potato pie($ 2.50). The BBQ ribs were slightly charred from the grill, flaky pieces of meat falling off the bone with every bite. The mac and cheese was a homestyle rendition of the American classic and also an instant favorite. The collared greens were fresh and tasty with bits of pork included. The sweet potato pie was creamy and had all the lovely flavors of smashed sweet potatoes in pie form. Overall I enjoyed Lowe’s Good Eaton and would recommend it to those soul food lovers out there who don’t mind going to a hole in the wall ;) Visit Lowe’s Good Eaton Soulfood Website at:

We tried this place today, after reading so much about it. I wanted fried chicken, but I only like white meat and they don’t serve it, so that was kind of a disappointment. I had the shrimp and fish combo– fried, with mac ‘n cheese and fries. A total carb fest. The lunch was good, I didn’t feel it was the best soul food I have ever had, but it was not bad. The fish was very tasty. The mac ‘n cheese was flavorful and very cheesy, but the shrimp were pre-made from a box. I also felt that they shouldn’t offer a terrible, to-go packet of tartar sauce. I expected something homemade. We topped the meal off with a passable piece of red velvet cake. I am willing to give the place another try. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. And no, I have not tried Mama Neems yet.

Excellent baked chicken and meatloaf. Loved the corn bread, yams, black eyed peas, cabbage, and fried okra. Disappointed that they were out of collard greens and fried chicken, but we will be back. Ribs on Fridays and Saturdays only. Can’t wait to try them. Not a great atmosphere for dining in, but absolutely scumptious soul food to take home. Even the rice(served with everything) was moist and flavored with some? secret ingredients. Oh, yes, the corn bread is superior. A bonus: portions are big, too big for one meal for us, and so increcibly affordable. Dynamite eats. Yes, we will be back for more take out!

Lowe’s Good Eaton is appropriately in the heart of historic Eatonville. The menu is pretty varied, including Shrimp & Fish Combo, Meatloaf, Slap Yo Mamma Oxtails, Smothered Chicken, Smothered Pork Chops, Granddaddy’s Ribs, Wings(Hot, Mild, and Damn That’s Hot), burgers and more. On my second visit here, I had the small order of Slap Yo Mamma Oxtails(I wouldn’t want to see the large). Served on white rice, it included two sides, cornbread and a drink for $ 8.75. I love me some oxtails, and these hit the spot. Lowe’s is a good choice for soul food if you’re near the Maitland-Eatonville area.

Went back for the BBQ today(a friday). Holy mother of G-d. Their ribs aren’t just good– they made me feel like Jody Foster in Contact. -= Should’ve sent a poet =- Words fail me. Best ribs in town. Easily. No one else is even in the ball game. Meaty, tender, juicy, well seasoned, not drowned in sauce. Fall off the bone, stick in your teeth, walk into your office with sauce on your nose and not even care kind of good. The only sad part– they only cook ‘em on Friday and Saturday, weather permitting. Sometime they’ve got ‘em on Thursday, and sometimes they’ll do it on Sunday. This is one of those reviews I almost don’t want to publish, as if folks knew how good this was, there would be lines out the door and around the block.(Considering how folks behave when presented with the inferior 4Rivers BBQ, the lines could potentially stretch into miles). Seriously. If you like good food, eat here.

OMG — This place was recommended by coworkers at my job. Ive only tried CALIFORNIA soul food. So trying the real southern authenthic soul food was pretty exciting for me. I ordered the slap yo momma oxtails with rice entrée and 2 sides — Mac and cheese with collard greens and you also get a slice of conbread. The oxtails were so tender they fell off the bone! SODARNGOOD… the collards were bitter yet tasty! The mac and cheese was also delicious! The cornbread — Tasted like CAKE! Sooo good! The portions are HUGE. You get alot for your bucks! I paid almost $ 8+ for my dinner entrée. I heard the curry chicken and baked chicken are hits as well as the cabbage. Only bad part no desserts — But they are known for their lemonade! Oh and the seating capacity is small so if you want to be in and out — CALLIN and pick up! LOVE this place for southern soul comfort food. I still yet to try Mama Nem’s on Kirkman.
