Haiku Maui Orchids

My trip to Maui was complete after visiting this nursery. Alan, the owner, was extremely friendly over the phone and invited me over to check out the nursery.
After talking over the phone with Alan at the Haiku Maui Orchid, I got excited and decided to give it a go. I found a cattleya orchid that I loved and he was extremely friendly and helpful with the questions I had regarding my orchid collections. He was not selfish to share his knowledge, and definitely not treat you otherwise if your knowledge of orchid is not much.
The quality, organization, and friendliness that you get from the nursery is outstanding!

After checking out a few orchid nurseries on Maui, I have decided that Haiku Maui Orchids will be the one I will be returning to.
Norman Mizuno, one of the owners (I think that’s his name…), has a certain gift for talking and entertaining. He’ll explain the quality of his orchids; like where he bought the parent orchid, how much he paid, and even some genetics. He is also very well connected in the orchid industry, knowing most of the nursery owners throughout the state and having some juicy gossip on them!
The nursery is well labeled, but is arranged by the amount of light the plants needs. So it may be hard to find what you’re looking for, so ask for help! He has a pretty nice amount of species and hybrids.
When I was there, I noticed that he had HUNDREDS of Laelia Tenebrosa. He explained that it was his favorite and that he has established a breeding program to create the best Laelia Tenebrosa there is. Fair enough.
I bought about 4 or 5 plants, all fairly large and healthy. The prices seem steep, but that’s the going price for most of these plants (google it!).
Another thing. I was also offered a bottle of water. Although water isn’t the most special thing in the world, that level of customer service is fantastic. So after drinking water and telling stories, I went on my way.
