We stopped to pick up my father in law. The place seemed neat and clear but not bright and happy to say the least.

Let me start by saying my grandfather was terminal when he was admitted to the Sarah Neuman Center for rehab/hospice care after a stroke. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer four years ago and had suffered many other complications throughout his journey. Two days after first being admitted to the Sarah Neuman Center he woke up at 7 am very short of breath even with the use of oxygen. Not one nurse evaluated him or notified his family that he wasn’t feeling well. It wasn’t until my younger sister visited him at 4:00 pm and saw his state, that a nurse decided to check his vitals. They refused to call a doctor, stating that the doctors leave at 5 pm daily(it was 4:30), they did not offer any other form of treatment beside the oxygen he was already receiving. They claimed they had NO knowledge of his medical conditions even though he was directly transferred from White Plains hospital to their facility at the specific request of his oncologist. My sister continuously asked for an ambulance to take him back to the hospital. They refused to call for an ambulance as an emergency call. The nurse said it wasn’t necessary and she would call their own service as a transfer. After 45 minutes and no ambulance, my sister, grandmother and aunt then called 911 to have him brought back to the hospital. Their lack of services, empathy and overall professional MANDATED medical assistance that day caused severe stress and trauma to my grandfather’s already fragile state. We all were well aware that he wasn’t going to live forever, HOWEVER if the so called nurses and professionals at the Sarah Neuman Center had actually done their job, he wouldn’t have spend his last week in a coma suffering seizures and strokes every couple of minutes, every day. And another little fun fact about Sarah Neuman, who take pride in their care and services to the elderly by having them wear a tracking bracelet… Not one person called to see where my grandfather is or HOW he’s doing and if he was coming back to the facility for his scheduled physical rehabilitation… Not 1 person. If you care for someone do not send them there. You’re sending them to their death.

Facility seemed nice. The facility also seemed secure for dementia clients. Residents also have a choice of meal options, rather than being fed whatever. The facility seemed clean and cared after. The outside gardens looked great. The residents are allowed to have things in their rooms, more personal belongings. I liked that my tour guide kept referring to the facility as my dad’s home.
