As DMV offices go, this is one of the better ones. Every time I have been here, it wasn’t crowded and I had very little wait. Remember to bring cash and proof of insurance for each transaction. The building isn’t easy to find, but if you know where Bear’s is, you can find it. Just go past Bear’s and West Marine and turn left. The DMV will be on your left. My one complaint is for all DMV offices. They are only open Monday through Friday, which isn’t very convenient for the working public. How about some weekend hours?

Two words can describe this place. .. .. «extremely understaffed». This place I’m afraid is unfixable due to budget cuts, etc.. . Walked in this place at 9:45 in the morning and pulled a number. There were ~ 22 people ahead of us. Did not seem too bad and thought we could get waited on within an hour but was wrong. One hour and 45 minutes later our number was called. My daughter took her written test for the license which took about 30 minutes and we were almost home — driving test to follow and we would be finished. We were told to come back at 1:30 — 1:45 and that would be the earliest she would be able to take test. Arrived at 1:30. .. .. . 2:20 she was taking the driving test. Did not leave this place until 3:00. Almost 6 hours to get a license for a first time driver. Two — three people to wait on 60 — 80 people just does not work. The workers that are there are helpful and try to make the best out of a bad situation. The place is run down and looks like it has not had a makeover sine the 70’s. No vending machines — it would be nice to get a soft drink or bag of chips. And what about magazines — anything to make the wait tolerable. Only advice I could give would be to drink heavily prior to arriving — might make the wait less painful. Seriously — Arrive as early as possible and be one of the first to pull a number and you can reduce your wait time. If you plan on arriving any later than say 9:00AM then I would bring a copy of «War & Peace» — good luck.

I may be giving away the best kept secret in southeastern Louisiana, but if you need a driver’s license, do not bother getting up at the crack of dawn and still standing in a ridiculous line waiting for the doors to open at the DMV on Airline Highway. Take the scenic drive across the Causeway, anytime other than the noon lunch hour, and you will be in and out of the DMV in less than 30 minutes. It’s a little hard to find, off the service road, but the your $ 3 toll to get back over the bridge is worth it for pleasant, efficient service and little to no hassle. Make sure to bring cash!
