Great Hunan Chinese Restaurant

The attitude is fcking bad!!! Holy fcking bad! !!!Do not go to there guys!!! 服务像屎一样！！！！！操他妈的！！

Am a Chinese. This is really bad, not sure whether it’s the worst Chinese or not, but it’s definitely not authentic. The service is not helpful either.

I really like Chinese food. When I moved to Marquette, one of the first things that I had hoped to find was a good Chinese restaurant. I am from the Lansing area and have always enjoyed good Chinese food from the restaurants there– both Americanized and more authenticate. I like both varieties. I was excited to try this restaurant after reading reviews and ordered my favorite dish– sweet and sour chicken. I was very unpleasantly surprised. The chicken itself was fine but the sauce was really, really bad. It was sickeningly sweet and bright red– which surprised me as some of the comments here had noted that the owner of the restaurant has made comments about the food coloring added. The sauce tasted mostly like maraschino cherries and was about the same color. I literally could not eat it and end up throwing the sauced portions away. Maybe other things that they make are better, but I am reluctant to try it again.

As a huge fan of american Chinese food, I left this place really unimpressed and slightly queasy. I tried their 2 course lunch special which began with egg drop soup (not so good) and then Mongolian beef with Rangoon’s and fried rice. The meat had a sour taste to it. I didn’t like it and Mongolian beef is my favorite dish. The fried rice was overcooked mush, again with a sour tinge, and the rangoons were unbelievably greasy and didn’t taste fresh. I guess there’s no such thing as good Chinese food in the U.P., too bad.

The service wasn’t that great. Don’t get me wrong, the staff was friendly, but when you seat people at a table you should ask them what they want to drink and ask: Can I get you some appetizers? We were the only people in the place on a Saturday night. The food was benign. The egg rolls? You can buy better frozen egg rolls in Walmart. I’ve got chicken fried rice I can make better chicken fried rice at home. The crab ragoon had no flavor and was overcooked. My wife ordered the chicken and vegetables, no flavor. The bill was $ 30 and I enjoy eating an awful lot but I felt ripped off my chicken fried rice portion was small and you could tell they only threw in some frozen vegetables and there was barely any chicken and barely any egg. The young man that served us asked how everything was, and I lied and said it was good thank you. I should have pointed out that your restaurant is empty but the teriyaki bowl up the street is extremely busy. they should cut their menu in half and focus on making really good classic Chinese food When the white rice that you order is waterlogged, you know there’s a problem. Its not a matter of if but when this place goes out of business.

Decent Chinese food for the upper peninsula. Would recommend over a Chinese buffet. Easy to drive by if your not paying attention, the back of the restaurant faces the main road. Would agree with other reviewers that the hot and sour soup is one of the best. Daughter had the sweet and sour chicken that was edited by all at the table whoop had a taste. This was more old school on how I remember this dish with carrots, pineapple, green pepper, a cherry add not as dotted up on sugar as this dish comes in at so many other places. I had the outrage chicken as recommended from another reviewer, was ok but actually preferred my wife’s chicken and mixed vegetables.
Décor ok, but we didn’t expect much. Services was great, quick and efficient. In a larger city with more ethnic choices this places likely would have been closer to three stars.

We enjoyed good Chinese in New York City and L.A.; so you can imagine our surprise to find a restaurant of similar calibre in Marquettte. The atmosphere is classic Chinese. The service is attentive with an authentic desire to meet your needs. Each dish hits the mark with delicious ingredients, wonderful flavors, and Far East, exotic presentation. We savored Hot and Sour soup, pot stickers, Duck, Pepper Steak, and Mongolian Hot Pot. Our guests at Chinese New Year all commented on returning as will we!

Service is super-​friendly, food is delicious and all reasonably priced. We’ll be back again!

They will modify a dish for you. If you are familiar with Chinese food and want something specific, they may be able to make it.

Been there several times lately.
Parking and entrance is in the back, lots of room there.
The décor is a little aged but the service is first rate, prompt and extremely friendly.
Soups are great, so is the orange chicken. Two people can easily go, get soup, and split an entrée for about $ 10/​person. If you get the two person deal you will have leftovers.
Tea is hot, fresh and prompt. Usually not overly busy for dinner, seems to be more a lunch venue.
Definitely will be be going back for more soup.

Overall tasty, I would eat here again. The Mongolian dishes are where it’s at– fresh broth and veggies. All of the food is very fresh tasting. Great service. Kind of a weird location out on the highway. Also they do not serve alcohol.

Hunan is one of the only existing Chinese restaurants to last in Marquette throughout the years. Reason is because its really good food, straight up, no foolin’. I’ve been on dates there and with friends to have beers, it caters to all. Authentic food at reasonable prices, what more can you ask for… right… you want to say ‘free beer’. Ha… sorry, you’ll have to pay for that. Enjoy and be sure to Unilocal it afterward.

Marquette certainly has a penchant for cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurants, few of which I’d be willing to recommend *cough cough. any of the buffet ones…* but Great Hunan carries the torch for great food and great service.
The food is authentic, and not just for the area. I know I’m usually the first to tout that the UP lacks authenticity with a lot of its menus, but the food here will certainly please any discerning palate as well as the casual diner. The owner was quick to school us on the proper way to make some of the dishes we had ordered. Did you know that sweet and sour sauce *isn’t* supposed to be a toxic red color and that’s just food coloring added by other restaurants? I know, right, seems logical! His way of making it not only looked less toxic than the bright-​typical-​variety but tasted a lot better as well.
It’s tucked up above the highway and if you blink, you’ll miss it, but it’s really worth a stop if you’re new in town or if you’re a proper townie craving some good eats after cruising Washington.

I grew up in a neighboring town and for years this was my grandfather’s favorite Chinese restaurant. When I moved away from Marquette, I didn’t visit Great Hunan for over 10 years, but we were inspired to stop by on Christmas Eve this year. What we discovered was one of the most satisfying Chinese meals I’ve had in ages.
I was instantly struck by the hot and sour soup, which had a brownish-​grey look to it. At first I was hesitant, but one sip and Iwas hooked. It had a rich flavor and wasn’t as tart as some hot and sour soups I’ve had. In fact, the taste is probably best described as home made, which was not what I expected.
We all enjoyed our meals, and I have to give credit where it’s due: the Sesame Chicken was outstanding. The portion size was perfect (although it did not lend itself to leftovers) and the sauce tasted great. My wife’s lemon chicken was good and the sauce was truly unique (it did not have that gross gelatenous look that it has in most Chinese restaurants). My dad’s Lo Mein was also quite tasty, but I must admit that I did not try my mom’s shrimp and vegetables platter.
There was nothing particularly memorable about the service or the décor, but I do know that we didn’t have bad service in any way. The parking was convenient and the only issue at all was probably the unplowed driveway, which was not easy to navigate in the snow. I’d imagine that the driveway snow probably had more to do with finding a plow truck on Christmas Eve than any sort of regular problem.
I’d definitely recommend Great Hunan. It’s not the best Chinese food I’ve ever had, but I doubt there’s better Chinese in Marquette.

I certainly don’t visit the UP searching for good Chinese food but oddly enough the Great Hunan was one of the most satisfying meals I had during my recept trip to the area. Our local guides indicated that the Great Hunan was under new management and had introduced some new inventive items so I was open to giving it a try. We had the vegetarian hot pot expecting it to be a bland shabu-​shabu type dish and it ended being one of the best hot pots I’ve ever had. The broth was very refreshing and sweet from the vegetables, and the hotpot was served with a peanut and chili dipping sauce that was very flavorful. We also ordered the mapo tofu sans meat — a solid dish with bold flavors. I was genuinely quite impressed and will probably eat here again next time I visit. The new owners were very enthusiastic and made sure our party was well attended.
