Why am I reviewing a cemetery? Because it’s of some kind of historical significance, and it’s really the only notable thing about the town of Martins Ferry, except the claim of being Ohio’s first settlement. However, I am NOT a history person. So… well, here’s how I recall it: Ok, so, during the Revolutionary War, we were out of gunpowder, and people were a-shootin’ at us. So this Betty Zane broad runs across the battlefield and hides some gunpowder in her dress, and no one shoots her, because shootin’ broads ain’t ok, son. So the gunpowder saves the day and we shoot the bad guys and the battle of Fort Henry is won. Incidentally, I’m pretty sure the war was already over, but the news hadn’t reached Wheeling yet. So back to this cemetery. It’s where our heroine Betty Zane and many of the soldiers from that war are buried. I don’t believe anyone was buried here after the late 1800’s. It’s a small, scary little cemetery — the kind of place that gives you the creeps in broad daylight, which doesn’t really reach the heart of the cemetery, due to the overgrowth of trees. It hasn’t been very well maintained; you can’t read most of the tombstones, lots of weeds and fallen in fences. Anyway, when I was a child, we would play hide & seek and have seances and other such stupid stuff that children do in cemeteries. COOL. But hey, if you’re into history and wars and such, or just spooky cemeteries, swing by! WOOHOO!
