I’ve been going to Jim for about a year now and love his hair cuts! He truly gets hair and does a great job with my long, thick hair. He’s a character :)

I have been going to Jim for 14 years. His passion for long hair & his technique make him best choice for those of us who love our long hair. He teaches you how to care for your hair too which makes him unique.

Jim is awesome as always! But just wanted to compliment Michelle on an awesome job on my new Balayage highlights! Really neat! Highly recommend Jim and Michelle for all your long hair needs!

Ok I saw allot of good reviews on here but my experience was a little different. He was late to our appointment and then got upset because his computer wasn’t working. There was hair from a previous cut on the floor and the table. I got a bad vibe, so I left.

I came to Jim this past weekend after another stylist butchered my hair earlier in the week. Before the lady created a mess of my hair, it was like bra length. But then she took like an inch and a half and made it all even. Jim showed me how uneven it was, it was horrifying. Even though I had to get another inch off, he evened it out and spoke a lot about the geometry about haircutting, which makes me feel better knowing that exactly why he is doing what he is doing. His style of cutting is very different than I’m used to. Like another review mentioned, his cuts are very blunt and heavy, but for good reason. He aims to maintain thickness and keep hair healthy. However, I am used to more texturized cuts. But that may also explain why I feel like my hair grows so slow and why I need a trim like every month. I’m trying to grow out my hair pretty long and I just want it to be healthy. Jim was sharing all his tips and tricks and even gave me a free brush on my way out. He was very nice and welcoming as it was my first time. Even though I was the dummy who went to some inexperienced stylist, he kept apologizing saying how sorry he was that this had happened to me. It’s only been a few days and I’m not sure how the cut will stand with my super fine hair, but so far so good. I would definitely go back to Jim. Even if I don’t particularly like this cut, I trust that if I voice my concerns he would listen and work with me to get my desired look. I also appreciate his hesitancy on coloring, whereas most stylists would bend over backwards to get you to color your hair so they can make the extra bucks.

I call Jim my hair therapist. He is truly an artist & my hair is privileged to be one of his canvases!!! No other stylist has even come close!!!

Like a good mechanic or dentist, finding a great hair stylist is like gold, and I was very fortunate to find Jim soon after I moved here, 20 years ago. He has photos of long-haired women all over his studio, so you know it’s a safe place(great photographer, too!). I can no longer make the drive up to McKinney every time, but I try to come once a quarter just to freshen my color and know it’s been done right, and get a quick trim. I joke that he’s the only man that really knows what an inch is, lol! The other day I tried going to someone down the street, and I caught him with scissors in his hand, when I had just come in for a color!!! Those of us with long hair treasure every precious, hard-won inch, and most stylists are just scissor-happy and consider hair a commodity that needs to be removed. Jim doesn’t – he teaches you how to care for and support your hair to grow, uses natural products, and clearly loves women – especially his great wife, Linda. This is the«safe zone» where you feel you and your hair will be respected! He’s a fun person, fantastic listener, and kind of a middle-aged hippy drummer whose love of music is contagious. So much fun – those of us with long hair carry his cards around and give them to other long-haired girls we pass on the street. Oh, and he teaches great braids and simple hairstyles for long hair, too – truly a specialist. Oh! And I get compliments at least weekly on my hair and its color, that we refined over the years.

I found this place because it was Mother’s Day weekend and I needed to get my mom’s hair colored as a treat to her. She has waist-length long, red, aging hair and it needs special care. She has been to many other salons that chop it off because of lack of knowledge of cutting hair, or because of their preference that a 60 year old woman should have short hair. Well it’s not their hair so we do not go to places like that anymore. We were able to book an appointment here with ease, and it was in a very cute area of downtown Mckinney. Everyone is super super friendly here, and they sat my mom down and took care of here immediately! Jim and his apprentice Jossy were both taking very good care of her, helping her select colors to combine and starting the process right away. Jim came over and started enlightening me on my hair, which is severely damaged from working for a Beauty store that tested our color on some employees, they had ripped all the nourishment from my hair and left my hair with frizzy, unevenly colored hair, that I have been growing out for months. Anyway, Jim put his expert skills to use on my hair while Jossy finished my mothers hair, and after seeing how great my moms came out, I had Jim trim my hair of the dead parts, not wanting shoulder length, he did long layers and focused on only the unhealthy parts. Eventually revealing beautiful, healthy looking hair to me in the mirror upon departure. I love this place, the staff is awesome, and my mom raved about how much she loved the personal attention. We will be coming back :)

I’ve never had a regular hairdresser and get my hair cut rarely because I trust NOONE with my long, super curly hair. Jim will now be my go-to guy. He got me in quickly, is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, creative, kind and personable. I expected to need a conditioning treatment(because most hairdressers suggest it) but Jim showed me how healthy my hair is and told me it was unnecessary. Any other place would suggest that and anything else they could upsell and make more money from. I felt this salon was very honest. Some people do hair as a job; it is evident that for Jim it is a craft. His assistant Michelle is excellent with color. I never rave, ESPECIALLY about hairdressers(Usually I look for one who will do the least damage) and I selfishly worry that this review will make it harder to get in for an appointment, but the praise is well deserved! Excellent wonderful job!

I have been debating this review for several weeks. I was super excited to find a ‘long hair’ studio and someone who would treat my locks with some TLC. I color my hair red, and after consulting with Jim’s assistant we came up with a color combination to fit the color I was looking for. After my color Jim came in and cut my hair. I LOVED the color AND I loved the cut. Loved my hair when I walked out. I was told that the color would wash out in a couple of months. However within a week I could see the roots that I had just paid $ 100+ to cover up. I tried to make another appointment to get my bangs trimmed and after 4 days of phone tag, I stopped somewhere else. I’m not sure what to think about my experience — I walked out thrilled — but within a week I wasn’t, and when I tried to get in for a bang trim and to ask about my roots, I couldn’t… So not really sure what to think.

I love Jim! Both he and Jossy are the bomb! She does my color, he does the rest. I went in today with an idea about adding a color to my hair. Jim thought I was out of my mind! Jossy pulled out all of the color options they had. When Jim started breathing again the three of us(I simply had the idea, they did their magic) came up with a game plan, that even Jim felt comfortable with. Jossy went right to work. With Jim occasionally popping over, she handled it. By the time I was all done they were both so excited about my resulting hair color that I could barely get a look! Jim is also big into photography. Nothing makes me feel more gorgeous and glamorous as when he takes several pics of my hair before I go.

Jim’s been my sytlist for about 20yrs plus. When he moved his studio from Dallas to McKinney Texas I tried to find someone closer and it took me a year to grow out the damage of a stylist who didn’t really know how to work with long hair. About ten years ago he shattered his elbow and I had to try to find another sylist while he was healing… more disaster. I don’t drive so I pay for a round trip taxi fare each time I go to McKinney to get my hair trimmed.($ 100 to yellow cab) He’s that good. I’m not alone when it comes to clients willing to travel long distances to use his services. There are a few I’m aware of that travel from other states. really. There are few who have his know how and talent with making long hair look great. He probably does a fine job with shorter hair, but if your hair is past your shoulder blades or longer, do yourself a favor and get with Jim Butchee. You will never leave him.. He is very laid back. Not pretentious, a photographer and real regular ‘joe’. As much as I hate how far away he is from me now, I understand the attraction of downtown McKinney. It is a lovely historical area with several one off shops and cafes.

I was about to chop my hair off completely because it had no body and felt very thin. I was looking for a hair salon and I saw that he specialized in long hair I thought, I’ll give my hair another chance. Went in and he knew exactly what to do with my hair, needless to say I kept my long hair and it looks fabulous! Jim is like the hair Dr. :)

When Jim Butchee moved his Long Hair Studio to McKinney, I decided to try a new hairdresser here in Dallas because I just hate driving. A girlfriend gave me the name of her very pricey hairdresser at a well-known salon in Highland Park and I made an appointment with the hairdresser there that supposedly knew all about long hair. Walking in, I did not feel welcome at all which was not a good start. Then after one woman washed my hair, I was delivered to their«long hair specialist» and the fun really began! After 10 minutes of her trying to comb out my waist length wet hair and only making worse tangles, I asked if she would like for me to do it, which I did. Then, of course, she tried to convince me to cut it all off when all I wanted was a trim. She had no idea how to cut long hair or how to blow it dry! After 30 minutes of her coming close to burning my scalp, I lost patience and left with damp hair. All this for an exorbitant $ 120 plus a $ 20 tip. Came home and called Jim! Jim has been cutting my hair for 10 – 15 years except for my one foray into the world of incompetent hair salons described above. He is also a wonderful professional photographer and did my head shot for my website! I don’t trust anyone else to touch these tresses!!!

If you have long hair, or if you want long, healthy hair, get yourself to this man’s salon immediately. I think it’s been about 10 years that I’ve been going to him and I get tremendous tips that make my hair look better every single time. His wife, Linda, studies all the nutrition of healthy hair and is happy to share her knowledge. Jim quickly becomes a treasured friend and he’s a consummate professional. Do not trust your hair to people who say one thing and do another — cutting your hair saying it will make it grow. They’re interested in your money, not in making your hair healthy, beautiful, and long. Jim wants all women to have all three so that your hair always looks its best.

I love this hair studio! I have never said that in my life… and I’m kinda old! Long hair is Jim’s specialty and he gave my long hair the best cut I’ve ever had. He listens and really communicates, how refreshing. Overall, this was a great experience. Thanks Jim!

Jim Butchée is the ONLY person I trust to do anything to my long hair! From Jim’s business card: «I want my clients’ hair to look like the women’s’ hair in shampoo commercials!» Jim is a long hair specialist, with three years training in Europe specifically centered on long hair care and styling. I’ve been a loyal client of his for over four years, and he has helped my hair grow down past my hips, healthy and shiny! He is incredibly down to earth and accessible, caring and friendly, and he clearly loves what he does. His wife is occasionally in attendance. She has beautiful dark long hair to her waist; I remember when she wore it much longer, but she’d told him she wanted a change. My first visit to him, I brought in sacks every single thing that touched my hair, inside and out. That meant schlepping shampoos, conditioners, styling products and tools, brushes, combs, hair clips and bands, as well as vitamins, minerals, herbal preparations and medications. Jim went through all of it and explained what each chemical ingredient was and what it did, good and bad, the positive and negative points of each brush, comb and clip, and how each tablet that crossed my lips each day affected my hair. That was quite an enlightening day! Most of my brushes turned out to have multiple snag and rip points that were shredding my ends, and most of my hair clips were creating creases in my hairs which made them highly prone to breakage at those points. He uses products with more natural ingredients and as few harsh chemicals as possible. He even deals with a line of hair coloring products that are more natural than the mainstream. He also has brushes and combs that are far better for hair care than the usual. And he’s cognizant of potential allergens, in my case — roses(*sigh*), and works with me to avoid them. I know he has clients with shorter hair, and I know he has male clients with long hair as well. I’ve met clients of his with straight, wavy and curly hair, all kinds! He has appointments available Monday through Saturday, and has found ways to work me in when I had an event come up suddenly. I just can’t say enough good things about this guy! Your hair deserves the best — and he’s it!
