Matt and Kevin are amazing. I go out of my way to come here. I love that there is always something open to taste, and the guys always remember my palette/preferences and have an idea of which(yes there are always options) wine I should sample. More often that not there are other wine enthusiasts there enjoying good conversation and comparing notes on the wine. There is no comparison– medfield wine shoppe is on its own level.

Matt has had the foresight to import a wonderful wine from a new French vineyard. La Tourbeille 2012 now available in Massachusetts. Thank you, thank you Matt! Grab a bottle or two for Thanksgiving.

I attended a dinner party where Matt arranged the wine pairings from his in store wine selections. The pairings included a Nicolas Maillart Marie Hanze Brut NV– France which was paired to the passed appetizers. For the soup course Matt paired a 2009 Elderton Barossa Valley Shiraz from Australia. Several other wines were paired making this meal truly amazing. Here is why I’m giving Matt and the Medfield Wine Shoppe a five star review. These wine pairings ranged in cost from $ 9.00 a bottle to $ 20.00 a bottle. Matt’s knowledge of high quality wines at low to moderate prices is extensive. My wife and I did consider ourselves wine savoy until we meet Matt. If you enjoy a high quality wine but don’t want to spend a lot it’s worth a trip to Medfield.

Okay, I always try to be fair. I try to account for different tastes and perceptions. HOWEVER, when I read the review from James M. I am SO tempted to ask, «Are you F#*&^ing KIDDINGME???» Let me address this review point-by-point after I tell you upfront where I stand. The Medfield Wine Shoppe is a place I depend on. I count on this place to provide me with wine to suit whatever mood I’m in and whatever budget I’m on. To be fair, I don’t spend less than $ 12 on wine, unless I’m at The Medfield Wine Shoppe. They often surprise me with their prices for quality selections. My previous career was in the wholesale distribution of wine, beer and spirits. I know margins. I know value I know quality. When I want a bottle of wine, I do not want Corbet Canyon(Canyon…Canyon…Canyon). I want a wine that is produced by a vintner who actually gives a shit about quality for value. Isn’t that what we want: a good qualtity for a good value? Consistently, since my first visit, that is what I get at the Medfield Wine Shoppe. That — and SO much more. I count on these guys to enlighten me on what is new to suit my taste. They seem to make it their professional purpose in life to find very good to outstanding wines that are priced from great values to fair-priced. They also have a computer system that keeps track of my purchases and allows me to rate them and write a review on line so I can keep track of what I like and why. Tell you what — why don’t I show you my purchases so you can decide for yourself if this reviewer knows what he is talking about? At the end of this review, I will post my last 25 purchases that are posted from October 27, 2010 to March 5, 2011. I’ll tell you ahead of time that my average bottle cost $ 14.12 per bottle. Mr. James M. mentioned Palumbo’s. Palumbo’s is a two-minute walk from my house. They are a very good liquor store. I count on them to stock my favorite staple beer: Golden Monkey by Victory. Their customer service is excellent. If I need beer or booze, I am grateful to have these folks so close at hand. A couple of times, I wanted to buy wine after Medfield Wine Shoppe had closed. I tried Palumbo’s. Their entire white selection was made up of Chardonnays. I do not drink Kendall Jackson. More than once, I walked out deciding on martinis that night. I do not believe that Mr. James M. knows good wine value from toe cheese. Sorry, but there it is. — Frim P. S. I’ve only stopped here twice, it’s on the way home. The place seemed a little too upscale for it’s own good, or maybe just for me. I like a much bigger selection. I don’t always want to spend $ 20 or more on a bottle of wine. Why not stock a $ 10 Chianti I can have with my pizza, or a $ 10 sauvignon blanc to sip? I knew I would be better off going to Palumbos, just 2 minutes down the street, but I turn off before that. I payed a few bucks extra for a wine that was not my first choice to save myself 2 minutes of driving.

It would be easy to drive right by this little suburban wine shop, but that would be a mistake. Tucked away in this little strip of stores on Rt. 109 is something that is more than just a place to pick up a quick bottle of wine. The owner, Mat, has a real vision for this place that is far beyond the average package store. Completely renovated this year, the store is well laid out and attractive — Mat and staff always engage their patrons in intelligent ways to get them just the right wine… often inviting them to taste a wine or two along the way to narrow in the search or expand horizons. As part of the renovation they established a web site that links to a membership card to create community around your purchases. You can review wines, see and catalog every wine you’ve purchased. and there are plans to expand those services further. It’s amazing what a personal vision, passion for the product and a little internet technology can do these days. Plus there are discounts for buying 6 bottles or more and reasonable pricing on most everything. Note that they carry only wine, no beer or «hard» alcohol.
