Church Health Center of Memphis

If you are unfortunate enough in Memphis to be without insurance, Dr. Scott Morris has created a wonderful solution to obtain medical treatment.
They have doctors in the facility in addition to having access to a wonderful network of specialists that you can be referred to see. So far, I have been referred to several of Memphis’ finest cancer specialists for my treatments. Everyone has been so supportive and informative and I have a positive outlook for my future!

I absolutely cannot say enough good things about the Church Health Center of Memphis! This is a wonderful resource that is quite unique to the city of Memphis; especially for those without medical insurance. I did the orientation a little over a year ago and got a tour of the facility as well as a rundown of how the center works and the services offered, which was a great experience. Unfortunately, there is such a substantial wait-​list to see a regular doctor that you will likely be waiting 9 – 12 months to see a primary doctor. BUT they also have Urgent Care, which I had to take advantage of once. The visit was affordable and so was the medication. I finally saw a primary doctor today and had a great meeting with the nurses and doctor; they spent a good amount of time with me to figure out what was going on with my health and how they could help, which was really reassuring. Again, things were exceptionally affordable. On top of this, they offer physical therapy, counseling, cooking classes, nutritionists, and so much more. Again, I cannot say enough good things about the Church Health Center and would strongly recommend it to anyone!

Thank you Lord for allowing for Free Clinics to help those in need. I have received Levothyroxine (Levothroid, I’ve been on this medication before) for my hypothyroid & Losartan for my BP medication.
I wanted to share my experience of today’s events. I ask for prayer that this new BP medication works with no side effects.
The medical assistant was awesome. He listened to my concerns and would pass them to the doctor. The nurse that came to draw blood was awesome! Didn’t feel a thing. I am so terrified of needles I was impressed she took her time and it did not hurt.
Then comes Doctor Scott Mortis M.D.
After a few question I answered I get my prescription to fill after the doctor leaves. I ask the nurse what type of medication was for the BP. She tells me I have to ask the doctor. She goes to get him. He return into the room with an attitude.
DOCTOR: So, you have questions on why I have you this medication?! (his arms are crossed)
ME: Excuse me Dr. I had taken Atenolol before with no issues. May I ask why you feel this medication is not right for me?
DOCTOR: Because I don’t feel it is right for you and Losartan is what you will take.
ME: The reason I am asking is because when I took Atenolol it gave me no side effects and worked very well. I do not want to take a chance on this new medication and have the side effects listed and have to come back. As I do appreciate the free medical care I am being offered. I don’t have means of transportation, it has to be authorized.
DOCTOR: Why are you questioning me?! I am the Doctor not you. Do you question your sons doctors at St. Jude?!
ME: Pardon me? Yes, as a matter of fact I do question everything St. Jude doctors give or what treatment they administer to my son. I am asking you why the change in medication. I would like to be aware of…
DOCTOR: You have no right to question what I know is the best medication for you.
ME: If you would give me a moment to explain my reasoning for asking you.
DOCTOR: You need to take this medication for your blood pressure being so high.
ME: I understand that sir. I want to discuss with you…
DOCTOR: I am the doctor and I will give you what you need to take.
ME: Now look here sir, if you feel that this medication is better for me because my BP is too high and the medication I used before will not work then that is an answer I understand. However, how dare you argue with me in front of my son about his medical needs. You have no right and it is unprofessional to attack my son’s medical treatment. With all due respect just because you are a doctor does not mean «we» as patients have no right to get clarity on our diagnosis and treatment. (doctor tries to interrupt) please allow me to finish, further more when and if I ever come back don’t you ever address myself or my son in this manner again.
DOCTOR: I am sorry I attacked your son. It was wrong of me.
ME: Thank you for your time. (Chango and I walked out. Chango turned to me and said, «I am sorry you had to go through that Mama. He should not have spoken to you in that manner not attacked my Cancer Treatment.»)
