The neighborhood around Pop Tunes has changed enormously since Elvis shopped there in his youth. Once the office building of Memphis’ Hi Records, Pop Tunes– opened in 1946– is a part of the rich musical heritage of the city.
Unfortunately, the downtown store is now located in the heart of a crime-​ridden neighborhood near the city jail. It still sells music, but the selection is contemporary rather than historic Memphis (for that, try Shangri-​La Records).
Location note: the original Pop Tunes is located at 308 Poplar Avenue– hence the name, Poplar Tunes– though the map at right gives the location as somewhere on Front Street.
