Southwind Fish

The fish is fantastic. Warning – you may need a nap if you eat here for lunch. They give you plenty of food. Highly recommended.

Love this place! First time we went the owner was rude but the fish itself is some of the best fish I have ever ate! The hours suck as well but other than that I love this place and food.

I moved from Memphis a few years ago and haven’t been back, but the first restaurant I’m going to when I return is Southwind Fish!

I am pretty happy to have finally made it into this place! It has been there for years and for some reason I just have never been. I have now been here twice and I was shocked to see how busy they were on my second visit on Saturday night. I now understand why…
The catfish is AWESOME! It is really some of the best I have ever had! The breading is unique in how in encapsulates the fish and kind of like steam/​pressure cooks it. It is perfectly spiced and crunchy like it should be.
I have had a few side dishes and I really liked the Onion Rings, the fries are Thick Steak Cut, Cole Slaw was on point, and although pre-​battered frozen the Fried Okra was solid. The corn looked awful but was actually really good.
Reason for only 4 stars…
The Hush Puppies sucked! Boo! Why? It could have been love!
The Shrimp is also pre-​battered frozen… Only fair in taste/​quality.
Stick with the Catfish for a solid 5 star visit so far in my opinion. They do have some other interesting stuff like Whiting and Big Bone Buffalo (whatever that is). I’ll get back with you on that…

It was very good and the only reason it gets 4 stars is because of the disposable utensils and plate/​cup and the too loud television. The good is good, hot, and plentiful. The place is clean and comfortable and the personnel are pleasant. Kind of hard to spot — located at the end of a strip center in the back of the lot with Lowe’s … South side of Winchester.

The service was good and my wife and I enjoyed the stay. I was a little concern about my grilled tilapia lemon fish which I purchased because it was a little smaller than I expected. My wife loved it all.
The price surprised me also. A little pricey, But we enjoyed it nonetheless.

Ok, coming from a HUGE fan of Soul Fish Café, I was impressed. While it is not as good as Soul Fish in my opinion, it was still very good. I was a little skeptical after reading several reviews from various sites, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the fried Catfish Fillet dinner, with fried okra, hush puppies and a sweet tea. The fish was delicious, along with the okra and hush puppies. Although the hush puppies were a little small compared to what I’m used to, they were still good. Service was friendly and efficient. I will not go out on the limb to say it’s the best in Memphis (because I think Soul Fish is), but I did like it. Now, beware, the menu/​pricing on Urban Spoon is outdated. I paid $ 12.83 for my meal with tax. Just so you don’t go in there expecting a $ 7.89 Catfish Fillet dinner (it’s $ 9.99 now).

I have eaten here a few odd times through the years. Every time the service has been nice and the food comes out made to order and hot. The catfish «po boy» is really just a catfish sandwich as its not on anything like French bread. It was pretty good though with hot catfish, tomato and lettuce on it. I had the fried okra which was also hot but was just the frozen bag kind. Overall it’s decent catfish that will come out hot. Whiting and big bone buffalo are also on the menu. They also have cupcakes and deserts.

I use to like this place until they began to strip the fish! For the money it is not good value :/​Fish is not bad, but the hours of operation are terrible!

Food is great. Service is no Bueno. There fish has this amazing batter though. The lady in the back was a little upset when I asked for additional items

I’ve been here a couple of times now. I was told about this place by more than just one person. I’m definitely glad I’ve listened to them.
If there is a place that could make you feel like you’re eating healthy fried foods, it’s definitely this place. It kind of reminds me of going to fried chicken places in Asia. Just so not greasy and so very clean!
The breading they use on the catfish and chicken are a bit different than typical southern places. I ate with my hands, and I only had to use one napkin! They make some good side items too. The sides aren’t soggy. And everything from the green beans to the corn is well seasoned, and not overly so.
Why this place doesn’t get any nominations for Best Soul Food is beyond me.

On April 18, 2012 I had to changed my shower head and decided to go to Lowe’s and straight back to this house. As I exited Lowe’s and aroma swopped by my nose. I wasn’t going to eat out tonight but I decided to investigate aroma. Southwind Fish was producing the smell that captivated my sense of smell. So I ordered the catfish fillets dinner to go. They provided enough to eat at a reasonable price. Now for the taste. It was delicious. The dinner came with two sides, I chose slaw and hush puppies. The slaw was sprinkled with cajun seasoning, which was new for me, but good. Only issue of the experience was that they did not accept American Express, got build my sky miles up.
