This is my favorite BBQ joint in dfw. The meet is always fresh and tender. In full of flavor. The sauce for me is the most important thing about barbecue. Wood pit has amazing barbecue sauce. Stopped in while staying on business at a nearby hotel. Definitely a hole in the wall — they had just painted and paint dripped on me (thankfully my arm, not my clothes). Very small, only 3 or 4 tables and a few barstools at the counter. The woman working said the place had been in the family for 37 years. She offered tastes of the beef, sausage, hot link, Cole slaw, potato salad, green beans, and pinto beans. Green beans and pinto beans were pretty cold. Beef and sausage were good. Decided on chopped beef sandwich for $ 5. Beef was good, chewy in some bites, a good portion for the price. Sauce was good, had a smoky flavor. Couldn’t eat it as a sandwich because the bread got soggy pretty quickly. Sides were $ 2 for smallest size, but opted for banana pudding instead, which was just okay. Not many drink options — tea or soda in a can.

They have added pulled pork to the menu and it’s pretty good stuff in the land of beef. If you make a trip to the rodeo in Mesquite, stop by an pick up some family owned and operated barbecue and tell the you read about it here. If you like it, write about it. If you expect Spring Creek or Dickey’s, it’s not a commercial chain… PERIOD! Make a note that the hours are 11 to 7 Mon-Sat.

Small Family owned BBQ joint. My family has been going there for probably 30yrs. I travel nearly 45 mins. to get BBQ from the Wood Pit. When my family comes to town they buy whole smoked briskets to freeze and take back to Massachusetts with them. R.I.P. Pete you started something amazing.
